Myers-Briggs Personality type...if you know it?
Posted: 2/18/2006 7:03:10 AM
I've taken the official version of the test a few times, and the various other versions many times as well. I always come out the same, and I expect most people who are honest in their answers will as well. Only the borderline types may change much on the different tests. So, I believe most of the tests are quite accurate. However, you do need to read the type descriptions to see if you match with what the results say - sometimes there are discrepancies, and you identify them by comparing yourself to the descriptions.

I've found this a wonderful tool in evaluating potential matches. All of the good matches I found were INFJ or INFP - I'm borderline between INTJ/INTP (slightly more J), but strongly INT. INF's and INT's are both rare groups, so it makes finding matches more time consuming and requires more effort in screening. (The SF and ST types are the largest groups, so have more potential good matches, but of course so much goes into a good match, not just personality type.) I really don't do well with the xSF or xST types - too much effort required for the relationship to work. Usually very easy with the INF's though, if there are shared values and interests as well (and there usually are, because those things are partly dependent on personality).

My type's INFJ. As is Piers Anthony's. I have to admit, that made me feel pretty good about myself.

ENFJ
Extroverted-Intuitive-Feeling-Judging

I've taken this also a few times over a period of time with the same result.

There's also a fairly new 'test' if you will out there called Personalysis that my current employer had us take and then we had a couple day sessions on how the different personality types relate and like to act... very interesting and I was pretty impressed with it's accuracy.

It's based on four different types as well, the Engineer, the Architect, the Surveyor and the Builder. Of course I fell under the Architect predominately, with some good doses of Engineer and Surveyor.

true enough, Jmelton. i admit i've never taken the "true" testing you mention and have only seen, "omfg do you like people" = oh my gawd yer an extrovert! weeeeeeeeeeee

*shrug* then again, i have a extremely difficult time believing your opinion has any merit based on reading descriptions of the Myers-Brigg typologies in psychology books. I've also read C.G.Jungs rather thick book on the subject and i tend to agree with his take on things and not the spin those two ladies put on it. He always said noone should take this stuff seriously as a "personality type" descriptor.

having said that, i do enjoy the idea that their are different aspects of our consciousness (sub-/un- etc) that are identifiable. and that emotions can be separated from sensation and described differently than thought, reason and abstractions. Intuition as a concept that can be described in psychological terms by professionals like C.G.Jung is reassuring on many levels.

maybe there is a deeper meaning behind the eastern and western "astrologies" and other superstitions. maybe the myers-brigg typology captures this concept better than mystical mumbojumbo.

then again, maybe we're genetically programmed to accept that there's some order to the random chaos in this universe with no end and no beginning, so even sacrificing goats makes sense. i dunno.

I am an ISFJ...... Amazing test! Sounds exactly right to me " With their extraordinary commitment to security, and with their unusual talent for executing routines, Protectors do well in many careers that have to do with conservation: curators, private secretaries, librarians, middle-managers, police officers, and especially general medical practitioners. To be sure, the hospital is a natural haven for them; it is home to the family doctor, preserver of life and limb, and to the registered nurse, or licensed practical nurse, truly the angels of mercy."

To Muffy - "what kind of M-B TYPE puts a "~ " before AND after his name? :-)

Last time I did this I was an INFJ.

I put a fair amount of stock in this stuff for the following reasons -

1. It completly explains why I think certain people are complete idiots (no Muffy, I'm not necessarily talking about u here) These people are across the grid from me/my type

2. It explains why I hate my job - I work in insurance as an actuary and I should be conseling sex addicts (part seriuos/part joking) Conseling doesn't pay well so I suffer

3. It further explains why I'm had trouble finding my life-mate

Anybody know of a dating site that leverages such typing - or at least that does it well?! See, I'm an idealist dreamer.

HB_Doug: oh that's easy to answer: Muffy is my nickname and has always been interpreted by idiots as, "he's a ****" (so it's more fun to emphasize that by putting in curly-cues) As to where Muffy came from and why i love it so? Well, that's a personal thing and off-topic.

I believe that myers briggs is a great communication tool. Sometimes it's useful to understand where another person might be coming from. I've also found that myers briggs is a tool that's often pretty accurate.

I am ESTJ --
Likes making decisions on the basis of logic, using objective considerations
Is concerned with truth, principles and justice
Is analytical and critical, tending to see the flaws in situations
Takes an objective approach

The potential ways in which an ESTJ can irritate others include:

focusing too much on the current task at the expense of broader interpersonal issues
being too blunt in giving criticism
not seeing the wood for the trees
not encouraging others to experiment or innovate
not paying enough attention to others' feelings and values

too funny HB... I am a boss (at work).... but not your boss. :)

Although two well-developed individuals of any type can enjoy a healthy relationship, INFJ's natural partner is the ENTP, or the ENFP.
OR
ESFJ's natural partner is the ISFP, or the INFP.

I think the first statement is important to remember though.... anyone can have a healthy relationship with any myers briggs type. The inventory helps you understand each other.

The Four Preferences are:

Extraversion and Introversion (E or I)
Sensing and Intuition (S or N)
Thinking and Feeling (T or F)
Judging and Perceiving (J or P)

Hey "BasicallySweet" how do you know so much about M-B

I pulled out my "Plz Understand Me" book and was reading about how the types are attracted to opposites. Doesn't this seem counter-intuitive or at least counter productive

So Z-Beautiful-girl would be attraced to I - S - F - P

from the reccommended site

Birds of a Feather Flock Together

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although we are attracted to people who are very different from us in the way we deal with the world, we are most attracted to others who have a similar focus in their lives. Couples who have the same dominant function in their personalities seems to have the longest and happiest relationships. So, for example, an individual whose dominant function is Introverted Sensing (ISTJ or ISFJ) seems to be naturally drawn towards partners with a dominant function of Extraverted Sensing (ESTP or ESFP).

We have also noticed that Sensors seem to communicate best with other Sensors, and that Intuitives seem to communicate best with other Intuitives. There seems to be a more equal partnership formed with people who communicate on the same level, although there are many successful relationships between Sensors and Intuitives. Two individuals of any type who are well-developed and balanced can communicate effectively and make a relationship work, but many people will communicate best with people who share their same information gathering preference.

With that in mind, it shouldn't come as any surprise to learn that research regarding Personality Type and Relationships shows a definite pattern which indicates that successful mates often share the same dominant function, and the same letter preference ("S" or "N") for their information gathering function. Of course, that does not mean that people with different preferences cannot have a happy, successful marriage, it simply indicates that people frequently settle down with individuals who are on their same "wave-length"

Add one more INFP here.

I've taken this test, in long and short versions, over the course of twenty years and I always come up the same. It really is me.

Myers-Briggs views personality as what works best for someome, how that types relates to others and situations, and what activities work best for you.

FWIW, I started to get comfortable with myself when personality was described as a strength to use rather than a commodity to be shaped, changed, or increased like breast or muscle size to please others, in the way the culture views the body. So why fight it? I'm an introvert. Amen.

"INFP (Introverted feeling with intuiting): These people are idealistic, self-sacrificing, and somewhat cool or reserved. They are very family and home oriented, but don't relax well. You find them in psychology, architecture, and religion, but never in business." (Jung admired this type, who was himself this type, of course.)
==>http://www.mythsdreamssymbols.com/jungpersonalitytheory.html

Other famous INFP's include: Homer, the Virgin Mary, Shakespeare, Hans Christian Andersen, Albert Schweitzer, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, "Mister" Fred Rogers and Princess Diana. (I don't know how they got the goods on the Virgin Mary here either, or Shakespeare, or HOmer, since it's not sure whether he existed in a single life or in several.)

well, you could refine it. even find an URL to a detailed myers-briggs test. the best thing i'd advise would be to create a poll and have the administrators enable it so we could input our typologies.

I am a solid INFP. I have administered and interpreted the M-B for many years and can vouch for the utility that the test can have. However, the full interpretation of the profiles is quite complicated and a simplistic analysis of any type can be problematic. I also agree with muffy that Jung's (who was himself an INFP, BTW) archetypes do not lend themselves to simplistic analysis. I would say that the test is derived from and based upon some principles of Jungian psychology. I would not support the position that the M-B is the realization of a practical application of it. It does seem interesting that so many posters here have rather rare types. It would seem that this is not your typical "pond".

However, knowing my score as I do I don't necessarily know myself better any suggestions?
