quote] Interestingly, my driving instructor, an ex cop, once made me drive, briefly, sat on one hand!

didn't I read about that in the newspapers when he got arrested.....

Oh you mean he made you sit on one of YOUR hands....

Smoking at the wheel can be one of the most dangerous things.... I remember one time I was on a motorway, going through road works (no hard shoulder) and I dropped my cigarette, and it rolled between my legs and started burning where it really shouldnt have been..... luckily there was a slip road I could turn off onto and pull up to retrieve the offending piece of tobacco..... My partner of the time didnt know whether to be afraid or pi$$ herself laughing at my yelps.

Okay I was driving at the time, when my son, passed me an ice cream that he didn't want, rather than throw it out I started to eat it

No sooner had I taken a few licks and a Police car was behind me pulling me over. He went through the normal episode of checking the car over etc and then warned me for driving whilst eating my ice cream. He left it at the warning stage and urged me to take more care whilst driving etc.

Wow, a sensible Police Officer; warned you you were doing something wrong but didn't push for a ticket. Not many of those left these days.

Yes he was right to stop you, yes you were wrong for eating whilst driving. And yes we all do it at some point or another, doesn't make it right - but we are all rebellious when behind the wheel (or handlebars), we all push back against the system because we don't see the harm in it, and for 99.9% of the time as long as it's done sensibly there isn't any harm in it. It's just the other 0.1% of the time that has to be accounted for (all percentage statistics supplied courtesy of my own random Internet statistical bullshit generator © 2008).

& that type of behaviour is limted to taxi drivers is it? Other drivers don't do that? Or do you have a dislike for all professional drivers? I see bad examples from all drivers in all trades, I'm surprised you don't go onto list white van men & others in your stereotypical response.

Calm down - I stipulated taxi drivers , I did not mention white vans , buses, artics or any other professional driver . As far as I know artics dont make un-announced U-turns without looking , and ( amazingly ) neither do white vans . Taxis do and they also make sudden lane changes when they get a shout of another fare or whatever, and they make a lot more of them than any other driver group. Actually , I should be more specific - mini cab drivers !

For your information, I am also a professional driver in my day job , ride motorcycles and rally cars for a hobby , so I am probably as safe as you. And you are right - its not down to luck.

this kind of flaming

?? I am not flaming anyone - merely defending my opinion from the following:

Or do you have a dislike for all professional drivers?

I'm surprised you don't go onto list white van men & others in your stereotypical response.

Lets agree to disagree .

Also apologies from me for going off topic - like I said , taxis are a whole new topic ... ( no offence Malcolm !)

then presumably we will all have to get automatic cars 'cause we won't be allowed to take our hand off the steering wheel to change gear
As the owner of an automatic car i agree manuals are dangerous and should be banned as you don't have 2 hands on the wheel.
