| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/8/2008 4:56:59 PM | | One of the many stories of family history is how my mom & dad won a TV on a quiz show at the Indiana State fair in 1949. It was a 10" table model, and we were the only ones in our tiny little town to have one. I remember family friends coming over to watch on Sunday night. (Sid Ceasar?) Our house was also very small, and they would line up in the kitchen chairs to watch that little screen. My children laugh when I explain how TV didn't operate 24 hours a day, and my brother & I would watch the "test pattern" until the cartoon show came on at 4:00 or so. I fell in love with TV back then, and I still love it. | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/8/2008 5:33:07 PM | Absolutely, I barely watch it now! I used to watch TV all the time, but have more interesting pursuits now to fill my time. When I am at home after work I do put the TV on, and then I retreat to my office.........I just like the background noise, otherwise the apartment is just too quiet!

Exactly!
Why waste time on watching teevee when you can build up your own cadre of PoF stalkers, no-shows and bad dates?!

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/8/2008 5:55:55 PM | | As long as I've got something else to do I don't even care about t.v. but like to have it around for the news. If I didn't have the internet then I'd be a boob in front of the tube. People who come to visit seem to be disappointed because I don't have dish net or more than just local channels. I throw in a movie occassionally to entertain guests and that's about it. As far as I'm concerned ... I just turn it on so there will be a little noise in the house. | |

I don't need a television for that, I have a wife!
I lived without a television for several years. I think it does something to a person, puts them out of sync with the Evil of Modern Culture. I was visiting a friend, his wife was ranting about "Big Brother" and "Survivor" and "Deal or No Deal".
I had no idea what she was talking about or why it was so interesting.

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/8/2008 7:49:05 PM | I can live just fine without TV, thank you! I get kinda jittery though if I run out of unread books... or if DSL is down... | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/8/2008 9:30:20 PM | One of my favorite bumperstickers ... Kill Your Television
I didn't even own a television for more than five years ... have one now, mostly for friends who visit ... but seldom watch it unless I'm relaxing with a movie. More than anything else, if it's even on, it's more about creating a visual presence in the house because the sound is muted and I'm jammin' out on the stereo ... the music is always playing at my place.
Couldn't live without my stereo and tunes ... or my books.

Did you mean "something else" or "someone else"? Because the toy store can help you out with "something".
You keep talking like that, Mae, and people might get the wrong idea.

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 5:01:55 AM | I have enjoyed watching CSI and some of the reality shows. I could live without it, but don't want to! I don't have men to my home unless we are in a relationship and even then I don't know if I will ever get to the point where I would have an SO here all the time. A tv on doesn't interfer with my life at all. I read 900 pages some days, about 3000 a week. I know I do enough reading. My head is filled with usless knowledge about nothing important. Watching history channel also is great to put their pictures of historical events to my imaginated pictures from reading. I hate talking on the phone, I do that as little as possible. I listen to music primarily when I am in my car. But I am going to listen to a band practice tonight, don't think they will have a tv on. My kids spend more time on their computers then watching tv, but when it comes to new shows on the history channel, they do watch them. A tv is like everything in your life, there is a time and place, but if you are trying to have a romantic talk, music channel is best. | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 5:47:29 AM | I find this thread to be very amusing. In the United States we live in a tv watching nation, but amazingly, here at the POF forums, most people appear to not watch tv or if they dare admit that they do then it is very little. I reminds me of the thread about carrying a balance on your credit card, for while 60% do carry a balance here at the POF forums virtually nobody would admit to carrying a balance from month to month on their credit cards. What a very unique group we have here that apparently does not reflect the nation as a whole.
Well, let me buck the trend here and proudly admit that I watch tv every moment I can. In fact, I am watching it this very moment as I type this. I have a bachelor's degree in mass communications (oops, that would be tv, radio, newspapers, and advertising) and I am also in good physical condition. Plus, in spite of wasting my mind on tv I am somehow able to string together two intelligent sentences. Also, once upon a time I belonged to a Pentecostal sect who did not believe in having tv sets and they really thought they were so much better than everyone else because of that. Somehow I catch that same drift here with equating not having a tv or watching very little with somehow with somehow having an aura of pseudo intellectual superiority. It may not be said overtly, but the tone is there.
I could attempt to somehow and fit in and justify by tv habit by claiming that I only watch PBS and nature shows, but I don't. I watch whatever I like and don't in the least feel bad about it. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent". Well, I don't consent. I love tv and watch a lot of it.

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 7:23:59 AM | What TV? Happy to live without a TV. I doubt I have missed much. I still enjoy watching DVDs. But not without radio and certainly not without internet unless my life was to change! | |
|
| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 8:32:19 AM | I haven't had cable for about 5 years now, having given it up as part of my effort to get more active. I will occasionally watch Dr. Phil, Law & Order, and CSI. The only program I watch with any regularity is Jeopardy.
I have become a computer junkie, spending anywhere from one to four hours per day online.

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 9:12:41 AM | "Who needs a tv when you have POF Forums!"
I do, sometimes I lose my internet connection
My TV is on almost all day, sometimes I leave my house and forget to turn it of because I don't even notice that its on. If it breaks I'm going to buy a new and better one. I like watching certain programs and sports. There are times when I wish I had 2 of them side by side so I could watch the Pistons and Red Wings playing at the same time so I wouldn't have to use my remote to switch stations. I enjoy that "boob" tube. But then again when I had other boobs to enjoy I didn't like my TV as much as I do but I still wouldn't give the damn thing up!!!

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 9:19:49 AM | I literally could NOT live without my TV -- I am a Day Trader and can't do my job correctly without Bloomberg in the a.m. I would starve if I lost all my $$$$.
I think it's very important to be informed of what is going on in the world, so if you plan to vote for President, I hope you at least know what the issues are. Maybe you can read the newspapers, but I like to see a variety of view points like in several Cable news stations.
I have a home gym, and watch movies for long cardio sessions. Science or history channels are good for weights. Some of those talk shows will really up the adrelin level, too!
I also use cable music, movies and sports events when entertaining.
And cartoons like the Simpsons for my inner child.

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 11:43:01 AM | Absolutely. I didn't have a tv from 1985-1989 and then ditched it again in 2002. Haven't missed it at all. If I really have an urge, I can to a friend's place to watch it.
Just the other day, I was sitting in a waiting room for 6 hours waiting on a vehicle repair and they had HDTV and satellite TV with 150 channels and the only thing on was the NH Primaries and VH1 classic. It so totally reaffirmed my commitment to remaining free of the idiot box.

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/9/2008 3:43:01 PM | Hi tigergem, I know what you mean! My exbf had HDTV and over 300 channels, 20 of which he would watch on a semi-regular basis. What a waste of money!! I did like to watch movies on the 52-inch screen though.... | |

...Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn....as opposed to a "someone"....at least with the toy store purchase I can "switch it off" when I'm done and throw it into a drawer...and I never have to worry about whether or not it was good for them....

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/10/2008 12:25:25 AM | As a baby boomer, I am product of television. Because I work in the creative field (advertising) I have to watch TV for current events and current cultural trends. However, I don't watch much of it. The only shows I watch is cable: Keith Olbermann, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and the Simpsons and Family guy for more laughs. I used to have HBO and would watch Curb Your Enthusiasm. Half the stuff on TV is junk. As a writer, I can't stand formulaic sitcoms. And I hate "reality" TV. It's cheap and it doesn't require writers. Besides, they aren't "real" at all anyway. It's all staged by the producers. Even my computer, I limit myself to whatever work I need to do, but I do read the NY Times online and CNN. I've gotten tired of U-Tube. So much of it is junk. | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 1/10/2008 3:37:02 PM | i raised my four sons without cable but with movies and taped pbs. now all my sons hate the t.v. they do love movies though. but cable is more a waste of time. we use to have a kill your television bumper sticker on an old set of ours but it bit the dust. raising my sons without commercialization seperated them from most of thier friends at school. but my boys read alot and all have active imaginations and opinions. they also eat well, (one is a vegetarian and all eat organic,) and they believe there is a definite connection between obesity and television. | |
