| could you live without your tv Posted: 3/31/2008 3:38:15 AM | I don't use my t.v. anymore. I have never been fond of cable or satellite. Who wants 500-800+ channels when maybe one or two of them air something worth watching once in a while? I'd probably be cheating a bit since I can hook an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and just about any other newer system straight into my computer monitor. There also isn't much on television that can't be found online, which is part of why I haven't bothered with it in a long time. If I really want to see something I just watch it on my computer.
My computer is sufficient for home entertainment via movies, music, surround sound, and games. I could live without my computer as well, but paying bills, doing school work, and keeping in touch with my parents in China sure would suck.

| could you live without your tv Posted: 3/31/2008 4:17:02 AM | Best show on TV:

Funny, entertaining, beats down big business, psychologically eye opening -- definitely out of the box.
I confess to admit to being hooked to Survivor and LOST. I like catching the beginning of the late night shows to see if there is a celeb on I like. Sometimes the monologues are good -- Ferguson can be as funny as Chris Rock when he's "ON" but he is not "ON" much anymore like he used to be. Jay sometimes.
Conan being on Leno's show the other night was awesome! Blah, can't seem to find it now but it was right before this, about him running to his kids performance and some bald lawyer trying to show him a script while he ran through 15 blocks of new york with a five foot 2 inch high lawyer screaming "I won't hurt you!"

Conan is a living breathing biological cartoon! Sorry I can't find the exact link. My brain is not awake just yet. Or maybe the clip got removed, but I need/love the humor. The first three weeks of Ferguson's show were pure comedic gold.
I was going TVless during the gulf war and finally pulled a small B&W out just to know what was going on in the world as I was living in the woods far far away from civilization.
I am not as anti TV as some are... I think its like any tool, it can be used for good or evil. Be mindful of your choices. The discipline an individual imposes on it reflects their own character.
Should you really want to keep up with current events local AM talk radio is it -- any celeb who dies I hear about it ASAP and my friends and relatives are always so shocked how I often know about it before it hits the airwaves -- which to them is TV news. TV news should come with a prozac, you need an antidepressant to watch endure it's "educational value".
Have a wise day | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 3/31/2008 9:04:51 AM | | When I don't have roommates I don't have cable, which is almost like no TV. I rarely turn it on and prefer to live like that. It forces me to read and do more productive things with my time. | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 4/18/2008 9:38:55 AM | | I think the question is "can you continue living with your tv". Seriously the tv I get is so bad that I just cannot even watch it. Repeats all the time, long commercial breaks literaly every 10-15 mins and crap programs I cant even stand anyway. I just dont understand what there is to like about such crap. | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 4/18/2008 10:21:37 AM | I am proud to say I can live with out TV just fine. I can also live with a lack of internet.
Granted these are two very powerful tools in modern society that can provide not just entertainment but also provide and spread knowledge of our world, current events, answers to questions, bring up new questions and so on. The greatest achievement of man kind to me, has been the unity of many different peoples by the use of information. Never before have we been able share knowledge instantly across our globe using a network where even language isn't as large of a barrier as before.
The problem I see with TV and the internet [which go together like 2 peas in a pod], is that people are not going out and experiencing the world first hand to also aid them in making decisions. When someone gains/shares knowledge from few sources without much first hand experience, a mislead interpretation can be spawned. I am happy that the Discovery Channel, History Channel, TLC, Google, Wikipedia, and other resources that teach people about our world exist and are easily available for anyone to read/watch. You may even use books to support your point of view. That's good.
However when you come to an internet forum and share your point of view, I see an underlying flaw in most arguments. They lack experience. If anything, we should know by now that hearing a story, and seeing the story for yourself can have a drastic effect on your outcome of meaning as well as your grasp of understanding. In turn, you now have people with only 1/2 of a story and spreading it as gospel truth. This causes arguments and we all know how heated they can be. What if this argument wasn't on a dating websites forum? What if it was face-to-face...
A fine example of how misleading information can be if only gained from TV, Internet, Books is the thread about not eating meat. I see many opinions on both sides that have many good points but all too often do people quote from resources such as a PETA website or a book that is written by a vegan as to why people should not eat meat. They get biased information and preach it as unwaivering truth. Without getting into this debate here, the point is, if you really want to convince me that eating meat is bad, then tell me where I can go or what I can do so I can see for myself the problems with it. I have been to many dairy farms [first hand experience], as well as learned about the industry through resources on both sides of the argument. By doing this I get both sides to this story and, then I can make a truly educated decision on my personal diet.
I guess the point of my post is that as great as TV, the internet, and books are, people need to get out there in the world and learn through first hand experience. If this post didn't really make much sense, I'm sorry. I just woke up :p

| could you live without your tv Posted: 4/20/2008 7:40:47 PM | I agree with you oldsoul. I have been with and without T.V. ,. With T.V. in my life it's been my 5 boys and the sports channel mostly. I also get my news from the Internet and love my music. My brother recently bought me a small t.v. and I promised to watch it. I have gotten into it...on the odd night and it does fill time (love sitcoms and laughter, also discovery channel, CNN, and weather.) I don't really know when anything is on...so am lucky to catch a few good shows. Trouble is I generally simply forget to turn it on. Like you I am not a phone person. I would rather meet face to face to talk. My friends know that I won't talk long and have been perfectly honest to them about this. T.V. IS informative I know...it`s just not MY idea of a good time. Saying that I do love a good movie. (I`ll make the popcorn) | |

| could you live without your tv Posted: 4/20/2008 8:21:51 PM | My philosophy as far as television goes is I can live without it ~ just don't take away my music!
That being said, it IS on at times, but generally it's either on the music channel, or it's muted with the stereo playing.
