"some of us CHOOSE to drive the SUV because we need them to transport our families"

thats totally fine.
Just dont complain about the cost of fueling a larger vehicle. You also choose to have more babies and a larger family right?

i find it funny that people complain about the price of gas yet they keep on having larger families, then need larger vehicles to transport them..yet quibble about the gas.
At least i keep getting my shits and giggles.

Until they get better public transprtation many people won't use it. It's not convienent, nor can it be safe for those that work late at night and it doesn't go everywhere you need it to...

...and now you know why governments want to tax all drivers/businesses and the fuel they need, to supposedly build/pay for these transit requirements/nesseciaties...and it's not likely to ever succeed, not ever.

Forum readers...think about this.....the commercial/business side of your life (yes, your company needs or gives you a paid for vehicle to do it's daily business) pays the most for this thinking.

YES, transit MUST be better....but does anyone know that the lower mainland is the only area that does not base transit financing income to property values...in North America?...ooops....and 30 yrs later...we ask where the money will come from, aside from the driver/companies that need vehicles?

The monies you pay in property taxes is NOT AUDITED, as to where it goes....well known and called a black hole in the tax system here. It might help you understand why your taxes rise higher than the percentage in value of your home...or inflation?

A complicated issue, and with $1.50/ltr approaching, i wonder when the public will wake up and start asking questions....our property taxes, our gas taxes, where do they go???....hmmmm...get a smart car...or buy a transit pass, ...it'll solve the problem, won't it?

We did have the BILLION dollar fast cats.......
Now we have a BILLION dollar convention center as tourism declines.......
I won't mention how much the Olympics are going to cost, I'm not saying I'm against the Olympics but holy.......Are we ever going to pay for that, for decades, property owners probably, we're a nice, easy reliable target.

$1.50 a ltre aint so bad I guess considering the rest of the pocket raiding going on.

Pucks open your eyes and re read my post.... I was not complaining about the cost to gas up my truck, I was saying that gas prices have gotten silly.

When I got my little 4 banger Saturn it was $20 to fill it up, it is now between $40 to $50. So no matter what car I drive the cost of the gas has gome way up. My truck has a larger tank so it cost more to fill. And maybe its not as super great on gas as the car but it could be way worse than it is.

And as for the size of my family... I take care of and pay for my children... so no need for you to worry about them

MB, the car you are thinking about is called the 'ZENN' Zero Emissions No Noise.
It is a low speed , or urban vehicle, and can only be driven in B.C. currently.
40 kph, and only 54 k's range. Not much good for commuting, but in the city, fine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M88k6Ipp3c

What I am seriously considering is this:

http://www.canev.com/KitsComp/GeoKit/Geo-Kit.html

144 volts gives you 75 mph top speed, 20-50 mile range on one charge, and starting at $8000, + batteries, and a car to convert, it isn't cheap but getting more practical every day!
They do full conversions, or you can buy the kit, and install it yourself.
12 batteries are about $1300 ish, last about four or five years (800-1200 cycles), and can be resold as good car starting batteries when they are done.
Using Lithium Ion batteries, you can halve the weight for better performance, or double your range with equivalent weight. They currently cost about double, but last 7-8 years, and have no memory, so you can deplete them without penalty.

The average house roof has enough room for photovoltaics to charge it up free in about 8 hours of sun.

That is the only viable alternative available to us right now. They are on Van isle.

Look at it this way, only about 60% of your dollar goes to the actual fuel you put into your tank. 100% of the money you pay for electricity goes into the batteries. That is a great factor in economy, and how fast it pays for itself!

Check this out to get involved in EV's in Vancouver!

Ford Escape - I am currently driving one that is not an SUV, but it comes in a SUV model that is a hybrid and has been around a while so a person could buy one that is slightly used - say a year old - and pay a lot less. I think like most cars hybrids depreciate a lot during the first year. Some people say that hybrids are more for city driving, but I am not sure why.

There is also another American car manufacturer making an SUV hybrid, but I forget which one, not that there are a lot of choices. Cars/SUVs are not really my thing.

@ DevilGirl,

"When i got my littel 4 banger Saturn it was $20 to fill it up, it is now between $ 40 to $ 50"

uh hummm and when i used to buy a loaf a bread it was .79 cents and now its 1.99 and more like 3 dollars a loaf for the good stuff.
Like another poster said tomatoes and other food products cost much more.
A big mac at Mcshits is more than it used to cost in the past too...So what?...Prices go up as inflation and the cost of living goes up.

"So no matter what car i drive the cost of the gas has gone way up"

No...the cost of gas is the same for an SUV or a car
How much a vehicle burns in gas is the issue.
Your big SUV will cost more to run than your little Saturn. Guaranteed.
Suck it up buttercup.

"My truck has a larger tank so it cost more to fill"

Doh....of course it has a larger tank.
But it burns more in gas due to the larger engine and size. Basic mechanics ..dear.

"I take care of my children...so no need for you to worry about them"

Who said i was worried about them?
Certaninly not I.

I am always amaze that people can not free themselves of this image, this image of having to live up to the "Jones".

The choice of vehicle that one wants should never take into account what the neighbours or your "friends" drive. Why have a 4x4 SUV that never get used off road? You end up paying for fuel to push all this extra weight so you can "strut your stuff"...down a paved road.

Come on now. Be confident, be environmentally conscious and be mature. Choose a mode of transportation that fill your needs, not you ego. Do not be one of those who needs the BIGGEST truck in the neigbourhood to hide ones feelings of inadequacy in this or that.

My Ford Focus, 2 door hatch back, gets me from A to B in style, is efficient on fuel and fills all my needs. I go camping half a dozen times a year and all my gears fit in it quite well. I have been up and down quite a few private lumber roads all over the south of Vancouver Island...and back again with no drama.

I know, you did not ask me for my opinion. Sorry. I am reading this thread and all I see is a group of people who are living up to an image that is passe, that does not speak of good intentions...good intentions of saving fuel, saving dollars, or sparing our environment of more greenhouse gas. An hybrid SUV will always eject more emission in the atmosphere than a sub compact front wheel hybrid car, uses much more energy to built (a third of the evironmentally cost expended over the life any vehicle is use to built it) and will create more waste at the end of its life cycle.

Again, sorry for ranting this morning. I feel much better now. Thanks. LOL

The cost of the hybred are so high that you have to be a fairly high milage driver to make up for it in gas. I know that when I bought my vehilce last year I was looking at the Jetta TDI (Diesel) to save money on gas but after crunching the number on how many KM I drive it would take me at least 5 years of driving before I would start saving any money. I guess with the price expected maybe 4 years now but then how long do people keep their vehicles for and the fact that all that money is put up front instead of being spread over the 4 years. Then the cost of maintaining a Diesel was going to be more than a regular gas vehicle.

I am not sure about the Hybreds on maintenance but how much are the battery cells going to cost because they dont last forever either?

Mr Dudley sir........

You did enquire as to the whereabouts are tax dollars are going......fuel or otherwise.
I simply gave you a few examples of our gov'ts wise ole spending.....

You don't wanna know where the Federal portion of fuel tax goes, that'll really ruin your day.....

Hybrids.......

Apparently these super quiet cars are making the hearing impairds life difficult, I could see that.
Typical though, kinda solve one problem and create another, the deaf are lobbying these electric car manufactures to install some kind of noise making device while in operation.....so much for quiet.

Oh yah........back to fuel prices, pay it I guess.

Can't afford to, bought that BIG NEW DAK machine, with the V8, awhile ago, and owe financial payments on it. Besides, I LOVE my DAK, so, going to keep it.

For not only the gas guzzling power, but more so for the comfortable ride, and the safety that truck gives me.

^^^^NOPE, because, I would NOT buy hybrid. Because, even tho my DAK has got a gas guzzling V8, I still LOVE MY DAK, because, HE, yes, I said HE, gives me the comfort, and safety, and pleasure of driving a well built, and designed truck by Chrysler.

So NOPE, I would NOT, trade in MY DAK, for a hybrid. Besides, MY DAK, are like good old driving buddies, and BEST FRIENDS, even tho HE IS a TRUCK, it don't matter.
