Authorities say he did it to pick up the ladies, but the only people he managed to pick up were cops.
For four months, local authorities have been searching for a man who had entered Ingles and Bi-Lo in Marion on different occasions and told employees he was a deputy or narcotics officer with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office.
The suspect identified himself as either Eric or Aaron Morgan, but, when Ingles employees asked him questions about local officers that he should have known, the suspect stopped visiting the store, according to a press release from the Marion Police Department.
Officers didn't learn who the man was until Friday, when he returned to Ingles, and several workers there recognized him as the same person who told them he was a deputy, the release stated. The man asked for assistance in locating an item in the store, and, as the cashier helped him, he told her he was an officer with the Marion Police Department, said the document.
Store managers notified police and got a vehicle tag number as the suspect was leaving.
From that, officers identified him as 33-year-old Aaron Thomas Melton of Rutherfordton.
Melton was taken into custody in Rutherford County last week and charged with impersonating an officer. He was released on a written promise to appear in court.
"Melton admitted that he had told employees that he was an officer," the release stated. "When asked why, Melton said that he did it to impress the ladies. Melton said that he did not know it was a crime and that he thought it sounded better than telling the ladies that he was a plumber. Melton said that he thought it would help him get the ladies to date him."
Detectives said Melton has also been charged with the same crime in Rutherford County. | |
