I really really have to disagree here. While I love Apocalyptica like none-other, I think you are overstating him. He is a good drummer, but nothing amazing. He does a good job with his minimalistic kit, but that's about all. Check out Mike Portnoy for an amazing drummer

i will do that.thanks.

oh dear youve done it now, metal happens to be one of my biggest loves and i cant help but share it (forcefully if nessisery :D) with everyone else

right *cracks fingers*

hmmm, symphonic bands, lets see, might be some power metal mixed in here...they often overlap

sonata arctica - one of my fav bands and just breath taking live...seriously
Nightwish - have some good songs but are a bit, i dunno, just not quite there, a better version of them is:
within temptation
Fairly land
Rhapsody - oldies are the best :P
stratovarius
scorpions 'moment of glory' album - re-recroded hits with an epic orchestral backing
luca turilli - particularly demonheart track
fantasia - not a huge fan but tehy have their charm
dragonland
dark moor
blind guardian

APOCALYPTICA - some one mentioned above, more classical than symphic but very awsome
nocturnal rites- grand illusion album good starting place
masterplan
kamelot - i find their stuff to be completly hit or miss but when i find a track i like, i love it :D
helloween - particularly 'if i could fly' track
edguy - awsome band, not sure if they belong in this list tho...probably not :P
battlelore
battleheart

Folk metal also can be called vicking metal (dont mock it till youve heard it)

finntroll
Eluveite - freakin awsome band...check out spirit album
Turisas
Ensiferum
elvenking
moonsorrow - my least favourate of the list but worth a try

Ohdearjesus.YES.
Someone else who knows of the amazingness that is Finntroll.

:D

Your list is pretty amazing.

The only bands I could probably add to the folk/viking section would be Folkearth, Sunuthar, andViking among others I can't remember.

:o

But I saw earlier that someone mentioned Trans Siberian Orchestra and they're incredible.
I got to see them this past year and it was quite possibly the best show I've ever seen.

Oh god has no ever heard of rick wakeman. His album journey to the center of the earth is this encapsulated,He played around 8 keyboards had the london philharmonic orchestra in on the deal thats the shit. released about '74 its the classic tale of you guessed it a the journey to the center of the earth by jules vern (i think).

cant stand symphonic metal, to much long winded pointless pontification and over blown pompus production by people that take themselves and their music toooo seroiously.
As for drummers try out Rob Wright from the band NoMeansNo.I have been playing drums for 27 years and am no slouch and know shit from clay when I hear it and he is one of the best. One kick drum is all you need .there are about 2 drummers that do anything of value with double kick and I cant think of who they are(playing really fast rolls on kick drums does not count ,pointless show off material).

disclaimer: this is my not so humble opinion and I really do not mean to offend anyone or make fun of the music you so rightly like (each to his own).

Necroed for the greatness of Devil Doll and Angizia... both of which are a bit experimental and have some vocals that may be hard to get past.

I say mix everything (not all at once)

Experimentation through hybridization is how music evolves.
Some ideas:

techno-country
symphonic-rap
acoustic-punk
metal-ambient

I like it!

You can increase that number to three.

Metal+polka=ass kickage.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Rainbow.

One of the best pieces of work I've ever heard or seen is when Steve Vai played with various touring orchestras. A lot of hardcore fans get turned off when groups like Metallica, KISS and other do this. I have no probem with it. I mean hell, David Lee Roth did Van Halen covers with a bluegrass band and I don't recall major backlash there?

Once a musician, always a musician and there's nothing wrong with musicians trying to re-invent their work. I think Aerosmith & Run DMC pretty much took care of that on a larger scale. Yes, they got all sorts of props for "breaking down the color barriers" sort of thing, but the bigger picture was that any combo of most existing genres can work, if it's done right.

I think I'm a bit ignorant. Symphonic rock...does that mean songs performed with an orchestra? as a few posts seem to have mentioned

What makes rock symphonic? Symphonies stylistically I suppose are pretty varied and free, but they are usually in at least 3 movements, usually related in terms of melody and harmony. I know I'll get shot down for being old fashioned and this music being "experimental" and stuff means it isn't restricted by boundaries, but if it is, then it contradicts it's "symphonic" label, surely it would be better to call it something new and persue it as such? That way it avoids hacks like me giving confused ideas about how rock can be symphonic ;)

Theres an orchestrated album of White Stripes songs called Aluminium, but its only arrangements in a sort of ironic experimental fashion, interesting though. But not symphonic. More Tone Poem perhaps
