I explored one of the web sites recommended earlier and came up with this

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos400d%2Cnikon_d40x%2Cpentax_k100dsuper%2Coly_e3&show=all

The Olympus seems to be out of place however thought I would include it, what I mean is not in comparison of price range. I purchased "practical photography" Mag today, has a comparison chart there which was helpful, most come in pretty well certainly Cannon seems to be up there, they have released there later model now too which was not in the Mag http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08012404canoneos450dhandson.asp is a comparison between the two, probably for me would not be a lot of difference.

dp review gets previews and prototypes of products - also, products are usually out in the US before coming to Australia. It will probably be months before we see a 450 here.

Actually it appears Teds have them available add $400 to the predecessor

Did you notice the "Order Now - Arriving April 2008" bit ? :)

Also, notice the 400d price at Teds at $1099 is a twin lens kit, and the 450d is single lens. Neither of the lenses is very expensive, but it does make a difference.

look carefully at these things, and shop around, before you buy

pssst to me.. the 400d is now a better buy :)

The advantages (from the little reading I've done) of the 450d are not enough to warrant spending hundreds more... it all depends on what you want it for.

Cuddly if the lenses are not crash hot then maybe I am better off trying to purchase the body I think can be optained for around the 8- $900 mark and purchasing the lense seperate? if so any idea what a good lense is?

Well, I do use the kit lenses - would love to have better, but that's what I could afford.

There's a lot of choice in lenses - depends on what sort of shooting you'd like to do.

Lots of interesting info given and all of it positive and true. Although I can't see how you could take a bad pic pf Naamah!
As for Hilly, with Ladies it's all about light and angles, never shoot from level or below the chin, go higher and make her look up.
Taking a good photo is as much about light and composition of the picture as it it the camera and lense. I've often said to people that I could take a good pic with 2 lenses and a shoebox if I could get the lighting right. I did it for 25 years.
As for modern cameras: I watched 'the end' of the film cameras and Canon was nowhere to be seen for 2 years. Then suddenly they were the first with digital and one after the other. Now we know what they were doing! It didn't take long for others to catch up though and they have now been surpassed. I wanted a 'reasonable' hobby camera in the $1000 to $1500 range and finally decided on the Pentax K100. This was because I already had Pentax lenses on my film cameras and they are interchangable. I also like the fact that the anti-shake with Pentax is in the camera and not the lense like other brands which means additional lenses will be cheaper and lighter in weight.
Lots of good advice there from CuddlyCanuck. Like when you buy a car or a good wine it eventually comes down to what you prefer, what you find comfortable and what features you need.
If there is interest from Melbourne people then maybe we can get a group for a night photo shoot (my passion and specialty) or even a walk around the city shoot. The greatest thing about digital is you just keep shooting until you get it right. I went to a party last week and shot 250 frames. On film I would have taken maybe 30.

And the worst thing about digital is you just keep shooting.... and spend hours editing!!

Lol, all good - I wouldn't go back to film now, except maybe for an odd shot here and there for "fun" - digi is the way to go!

i'm not sure if you do it but if you post details about a "photography meet" to the moderators they send out information to the people in that city....

I think a night photography shoot would be a great way for a group of people to meet....walk around take a few shots...go for a drink.....take a few more shots....more drinks....go out and fall over..

Hmmm Pentax K10D or Canon 400D I think I have narrowed it down but the choice is hard. Any opinions?

Pentax K10D is on special as the newer model is comming out the new one apparently 14 mega pix. The Canon similar situation as the new 12 mega pix about to be released

1 recommendation.

GO HOLD THEM. Seriously. And play with the controls, even if you don't know what you're doing. See what feels good.

Wanelad. You also might consider a criterion I use in buying not only cameras but vehicles and many other mechanical items. When there are say 4 brands with only an insignificant difference between the quality and user-friendliness of the off the shelf items and their respective prices I will always go for the more popular as you'll find a greater range of services and after-market accessories geared towards that item over the others - particularly if you ever buy second hand accessories.

I personally have an Olympus MJU800 camera that I bought a couple of years ago, and it produces really good photos'
I never advocate purchasing 3 in one printer/fax/scanner. I had a friend who had one, and when the scanner ceased working, so did everything else.
I gave her my old HP660C which she used, and eventually gave back. Presently I have a Canon PIXMAiP5200 and a HP Scanjet 4800 series 2 scanner, both of which I find work very satisfactorily.

Hi well its done after going in having the feel I was slapped, na just kidden; did purchase the Canon 400D and hmmm does feel good, looks good and pretty snappy ha ha. Now like Pedro have to get out there sometime and start taking a few shots but my foot is givin me grief so maybe next week before I have the opportunity.

Its funny years ago when purchased my first SLR there was a strong favour towards Pentax but now it seems 80% favour the Canon & as Pedro mentioned they seem to have a lot of extras around.

Thanks for opening this thread again. I wish I got to see OPs photos. I bought a canon EOS 1000D this year and I'm learning how to use it. I found this great book called 'The Digital Photography Book' by Scott Kelby. He gives great tips/advice, it's well worth checking out. Canon also have an online EOS club with heaps of great tips.

I love photography but I am at odds with technology ... solution ? I buy el cheapo types where you just click and voila you have a photo ...... you see photography is an art form and relies upon the photographer... it's like the painter and the canvas , one doesn't need an expensive canvas or expensive brushes to produce a masterpiece

The beauty of getting a good camera is being able to zoom in and get closeups (and clearer shots)..this is the only reason I bought the better digi slr. I agree you can get really great shots with a little point and shoot camera ( I have a little sony for that very purpose) but to get a really good close-up you have to go the better camera...and zooms cost $$$

or you could go somewhere in between and get somethging like the fuji finepix s1500 or similar.....not dslr but got a good zoom and all the controls as well.....adjustable shutter speed and aperture.....dual i.s. all that sort of stuff.....zoom is equivalent to 33mm to 396mm

not sure if i am allowed to post links...but these are some of the pics taken with my s1500
