| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/26/2008 7:25:42 AM | I have always thought that more, smaller, prizes would be a good idea.
If the jackpot was kept at a million, and the 'lesser' prizes were 'morer' then lots of people would have the chance of winning life changing amounts. Lets fact it - a hundred thousand would be life changing for most of us.
If the odds on winning were better, I'd actually buy a ticket or two!

you could not buy a decent flat for that in the south...
NO it should not be capped... we are just jealous of the winners... simple... would you give away 18 grand? I for one ... no fvcking chance.... would I spoil my parents and family... to right I would... would I spend it on treatment for my daughter's disorder... YES.... all of it... and if I was skint after it... so be it... she is worth more than money....

Truthfully you couldnt buy a decent semi in this town for that. And i dont live in the south. If you take a punt on the lottery you know the odds of winning. And how the payouts are paid.If you dont like the game.? Dont play it.

Truthfully you couldnt buy a decent semi in this town for that. And i dont live in the south. You could pay off a large chunk of a mortgage with it....... and yes, I live about as far South as you can get without actually swimming! If you take a punt on the lottery you know the odds of winning. And how the payouts are paid.If you dont like the game.? Dont play it. I don't - hence my comment about if the odds beeing better, I would buy a ticket.
I just think that more people could have their lives made better if the prizes were less huge and more plentiful.

| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/26/2008 12:44:23 PM | The thought of winning £18 million is absolutely mind boggling to me. I'm not sure I could cope with it if I did win it, or even spend it. There are those who haven't been able to cope with that kind of money and it's ruined their lives.
Part of me thinks that the jackpot should be capped at something like £5million. That surely is enough for anybody.
If one person wins tonight, or even over £5million any night, why not give them £5million and split the rest between the other winners or ask the winner to nominate the charities they would like it to be given to..
Oh and I haven't won tonight. I have never won so much as a tenner.
But as an aside, I was walking past a local church earlier and they are having some repair work done. It's coming from the lottery fund, which seems a little hypocritical to me.

| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/26/2008 1:15:43 PM | | If by capping the sum winnable, you increased the amount going to charities then definitely. No-one and I mean absolutely no-one NEEDS £18m - like you've implied, I think adverse consequences can be huge, mental breakdowns, family split-ups etc. I'd like enough money for a holiday home and a nice car but too much money and you lose touch with reality. There's no way you, or I, or anyone could win that much and expect the friendships and relationships we had before to remain the same - whether you like it or not, people will treat you differently. | |

| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/26/2008 1:36:00 PM | I agree with one of the posters, who said that £100,000 is life changing to some people, ok so you can't buy a house, but you can buy a new car, have a conservatory built, have a fantastic holiday, have a new roof put on your house, buy yourself a new wardrobe of clothes, save some in a pension, get that plastic surgery done you have been promising yourself, ............. you just need to use your imagination...
I think it would be better to maybe cap it at around 6-8 million and the rest spread out down through the other numbers......(like another poster said) if they thought they were going to get a couple of hundred for 3 numbers, they would play, more people would probably play and again the money coming in, would increase.
I would laugh if tonight, £18,000,000 was won by 18,000,000 people a whole pound each.........................wow!

Early indications suggest there is ONE winner of the £18,900,000.
That is obscene.
Really? I guess if you were the winner, the person who put your cash down for a one in 16 million chance of winning it, then you would feel different about it.
No actually I wouldn't
I don't want £18,900,000. It is a ridiculous amount of money to win. If I won I'd give most of it away.
£100,000 would completely change my life. It would pay off my mortgage, my debts and still leave me enough to give £10,000 to each son. With money left over.

| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/26/2008 2:42:06 PM | I wouldnt mind winning it, at least if I decided to give some away to charity it would be to a charity I wanted it to go to..
And then I would live extremely obscenely on the rest..

| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/26/2008 2:44:37 PM | Early indications suggest there is ONE winner of the £18,900,000. That statement intrigued me so I just checked on Teletext and yes, there was 1 winner. 5+bonus won you 143 grand, 5 numbers won 2 grand, 4 numbers won 70 quid. I got 1 fcukin number, 1. Some people might think it obscene for one person to win so much but I say fair play to them and I wish them all the luck in the world spending it
I wouldnt mind winning it, at least if I decided to give some away to charity it would be to a charity I wanted it to go to.. IMO charity begins at home, I would sort my friends and family out and bank the rest.

| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/27/2008 3:13:37 AM | Capped? Absolutely not. But people who win big and say "it won't change my life..." shouldn't be allowed to play.
I don't play very often and as usual was one number short of winning a tenner. Bugger! Back to work again tomorrow...
|
| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/27/2008 3:18:11 AM | I think is should be capped......
After all I won a tenner last night & it's just going to be impossible to spend it all

Isn't that Clint Eastwoods line? You feeling lucky, Punt ? Actually no, his line was “You've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya... punk?”
|
| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/27/2008 8:41:19 PM | Well I was feeling lucky, had 2 lucky dips, and had just 1 number
Yeah they should cap it so that each number you get, you win a pound.. until you get 3 numbers and win £20, 4 numbers £5000, 5 numbers £200,000, 6 numbers £1 million
Nice and simple.
Then they would have enough spare cash to sort our country out and we would be more proud to live here?!
|
| Should lottery winnings be capped? Posted: 1/28/2008 2:19:51 AM | Yeah they should cap it so that each number you get, you win a pound.. until you get 3 numbers and win £20, 4 numbers £5000, 5 numbers £200,000, 6 numbers £1 million I think that is a good idea. Myself if I were running things, first thing, it should ne a non profit organisation, as R Branson wanted it to be. All the money goes to winners and charities. Get rid of the bonus ball, you choose essentially another 6 numbers and get a lot less? Then the figures, just off the top of me head. 6 balls-capped at 3 mill 5 balls-250-500k 4balls-50k 3balls-1k
100k is lifechanging, it's weird to think that people would not see this, as the imaginative man said it can be used for a lot of things, and as I touched on in my earlier post, that small amount (if you can call 100s small) could have a huge effect on a family/household. I think the attitude of, 'I'd rather have everything (the 18mill) than nothing(a decent payout) is greed and is prevalent in our society, it is also I think connected to fundamental problems we have. I have heard someone say that they won't do the mid week because, 'it's not worth it'. Gordon Gheko never had it so good. I think R Bransons plan was less of a 'winner take all sod you jack I'm all right', and would have been a boon to us. I wonder who will get the next franchise..Camelot start saving for you next payoff;)
