| leave england or not leave england Posted: 1/28/2008 4:07:43 PM | instead of talking about it, i did it... i left england two years ago and have never regretted it for a second. it is sometimes difficult not knowing the ways/rules of the land or the language, but you learn. i now wake every morning to sunshine and warmth, and when it does rain its no big deal. theres no pressures of having bigger and better, no more fermenting in front of the t.v because of boredom, being bombarded/brainwashed with adverts of all the things you should be buying. i am now able to sling on a t.shirt and shorts and do simple outdoor stuff, in fact i am rarely home. now thats what i call living... NHS isnt all is cracked up to be anymore either, what with the killer viruses you risk catching.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/15/2008 5:02:12 AM | I got the impression the thread wasn't asking about holiday destinations, but that it was a question of emigrate or not. A friend there, tells me aspects of Iceland, that mean I'm looking hard. I haven't won 18.7 million, I just want to work without some eff dropping steel pipes over my head. When that happens, I walk. I CAN still walk. Intend to. I regularly meet the "Proud", "I'm all right" tendency, and their comments, and the thing about where dogs have been is that it's patchy. So you don't neccesarily notice till you land in it or it lands on you. Then understanding dawns. Have a few nice days. If they won't use it they can lose it. | |

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/15/2008 6:28:08 AM | i was bourn and lived half of my life abroad i lost 2 brothers in my own land, i have adopted england as my country pleasure to be here despite some bad moments i encountered, i rather live and die on this land.
nothing can beat the rain, clouds, cold, snow, storms, thunder, i went for along holiday (6 months) back home, guess what? I had a home sick for London lol, ahhh I love it here, from teaching, helpful people, driving after midnights, to clubbing all night long, freedom of choice, justice, respect, charity when needed globally, cctv, and political ups and downs, to me england is my paradise and joy. call me mad.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/15/2008 8:39:59 AM | 500,000 new immigrants to the UK every year? Get your figures from somewhere other than the Daily Mail love. There has been a net EXODUS from the UK for the last five years.
Or the numpty that thinks the NHS is not free because you pay £6.85 for a prescription, irrespective of the cost of the drugs? Get a dose of reality next time you are overseas.
I have lived overseas, within the EU, and further afield (US and Africa). My mother lived in Cyprus for over 20 years (until she went utterly nuts and had to come back)...
It is a huge culture and lifestyle change...it is not the same as an extended holiday. I used to have enormous fun watching unprepared numpties being rolled because they had little understanding of what they are doing...treating locals as stupid because their English is accented.
If you seriously want to live overseas, take a year out, try it...but don't burn your boats.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/15/2008 1:31:58 PM | To message 26: I have personally never felt pressure to have bigger and better and I live in the UK I just live for me not anyone else. I don't find myself stuck in front of a TV I choose to go out and do things I like. England has some amazing places if people like simple outdoor stuff I work outside probably 70% of the year the weather isn't that bad at all I've never found rain a big deal. All the things you mentioned are things that can be done here without anymore effort if people choose to do them no need to move abroad for that.
I still stick with what I said I wouldn't want to live anywhere else England has everything I want I don't think I could handle working in the sun all day anyway... Only way I could consider living anywhere else would be a massive ammount of money meaning I wouldn't have any need to work or worry about health care etc. Leaving me free to enjoy whatever the place I'd chose had to offer.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/15/2008 2:18:49 PM | I left the UK 34 years ago but return every year to see my two sons and grandchildren. I would come home in a heartbeat, but my pension from General Motors would not be sufficient to live a reasonably comfortable life. Things are half the price here compared with the UK, although its beginning to get expensive here to live on a fixed income.I'm now renting a fairly large two bed apartment for$760 per month, gas costs $1.12 per liter and climbing, and now food costs are rising at an alarming rate, but I am still financially better off here, and I do like the people. My real problem with living in Canada, is that there is not the beautiful scenery there is in the UK, I belong to a hiking club, and on the trails there are no views or quaintness, just trees and more trees and this time of the year lots of mud due to the winter thaw. One of my sons live in North wales and I marvel at the scenery there, but I think most people take it all for granted, I just drink it all in. I'm going through a period of lonliness at the moment since my wife and I parted, my two sons live in the UK and my daughter lives in Michigan in the US and now I have no family here, so I really am desparate these days to have family around, to think, one time I could'nt wait for them to be gone, funny how things change. I'm waiting to win the Lottery,(Ha Ha) then I will make my move to come home, until then I can only dream, unless I can find a fairly wealthy lady who would take me a way from all this misery(joking) and live the life of a countr squire. | |

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/15/2008 6:12:19 PM | do you mean leave england for good or just to travel? if leaving for good, you will have to relearn english as being a canadian and reading these uk blurbs, i don't understand your version of the uk language, ie elevator vs lift, fozzy? for face, caravan for camper ... the list goes on! A PhD fr the UK once told me that the english language was being eroded. One may think of it as evolved. No matter, there is a definte dialect for each region, worldwide that is, influenced by conquerors. Think of the way you speak the language. Sorry, i digress! | |

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/23/2008 10:15:53 AM | I never considered leaving "for good", but for a while I did a year here and a year there, and eventually came to the conclusion that the whole bloody planet is going down the toilet *g*
The thing I did bring back with me was that to make the place where I finally settle be worthwhile, I've gotta get off my arse and put something back into the community and just hope others do the same, otherwise it won't matter where you move to.
[having said that I am a bit of a hypocrite as I do have my eye on a plot of land in Nova Scotia earmarked for the summer months of my retirement with the designs for a cabin all drawn up - just need that lottery win to pay for it]

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/23/2008 1:10:43 PM | Surely it's down to personal choice. England isn't that "bad" - OK the weather is sh*te and I think we are constantly ripped off over here - the price of goods is astronomical compared to other countries, BUT we do have a health service (no matter what state it is in), life is generally "good" and it can be a nice place to live.
Yes, I know there are millions who would disagree - but I am talking in a broader sense, not individual circumstances. Having said all that, my long term plan is to move abroad. I love the USA and would move there (purely for the price of cigs!!!) LMAO, I'm fortunate enough to own property abroad, so I could always move there, but there is a distinct lack of work at the moment, so it may be a retirement thing.
At the end of it, if you ain't happy with England, move on, simple really.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/23/2008 5:23:47 PM | | Leave...this country is turning into a toilet. It's full of chavs, goods are a rip off, weather's rubbish. Only thing we have going for ourselves is the football. | |

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/24/2008 6:06:20 AM | yes agree, if had the chance or the money would leave, not sure where l would go, with too much crime and young thugs around and parents doing nothing to displine there kids and the police doing nothing along with the soft sentences that the courts had out.
lm surprissed that we have not had a reverlotuion in this country where mature adults take to the streets and clean up the young trash on it and hanging around on it.
When l was young yes we had crime but nowhere near as much and not as much violence with it.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/25/2008 4:15:05 PM | I feel little connection with my fellow countryfolk but I see no reason to leave. Most of the worst aspects are exaggerated by a sensationalist press whilst the better stuff is overlooked.
From what I can tell most developed countries have their problems.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/25/2008 4:34:26 PM | | AFAIK the standard of living in the US is higher than here but building is on a dive. It's all swings and roundabouts wherever you go. Unless you just want some adventure, best to do your homework on prospective countries work permits, taxes, health benifits, pensions etc. before you make a choice. | |
