the standard of living in the US is higher than here
I don't think so? it's on a par to here in most places - but the blacks (sorry Vapourise) afro-americans of new york, new jersey, washington, savannah etc etc. would probably prefer our standard of living.

I agree that the poor and some sections of the US populace are probably worse off, but a skilled worker or professional in an economy on the rise would be generally better off, while your health stays OK.

I don't see what the colour of your skin has to do with your standard of living or your level of subsistence even, isn't America famous for it's 'white trash' population ? What about all the successful African-Americans which hail from the same states you've mentioned ?
The way I heard it is that the average black American is far better educated and more ambitious than the average white American and if that is true the only thing holding them back from being more successful is racism. Clinton's dirty tricks campaign against Obama is a good example of how easy it is to sway public opinion against an African American reaching for the stars and more.
I lived in England for a bit...just England, not the whole of the UK. It's a lovely country and the people I met were great, like the fictional characters I'd read about in books I expected to encounter they neither disappointed or exceeded that expectation. English people are wild !! When I was there, I really felt like I was living in a Fay Weldon created England - it was so interesting and different.....so many eccentrics and English people are so full of lust...my god that was a bit of a shocker, they've got sex on their minds constantly if I remember my experience correctly!! And another thing....you English people are so good at queuing...wow!! I never knew what it was to queue until I lived in London, the incredible patience required to do that really struck me and I couldn't help thinking that English people are really rather regimented and easily co-erced/manipulated into doing the authority's bidding, you're all so polite and malleable it's not true.
It was a relief to get back to sanity when I returned home to Ireland.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/25/2008 11:04:50 PM | well......there may be many people leaving uk.but.....and I say this having lived in various places around the world, for example the US for 5 years, and thailand for the last 5 years....living abroad can be great, yes, in many respects. But at the end of the day, you dont quite fit there, and are not among your own people. All peoples around the world are different, but none are as fair, or as forthright as our own people. so now I am back, and each day has of course its dreary parts, and yes, there are plenty of muppets out there, but......rock and roll.......its good to be back! | |

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 4/26/2008 5:30:43 PM | I've left. Am in South of France now. To be honest, if I hadn't left or done something drastic after break up I'd have gone under. But now? If I never saw England again I wouldn't care. I say this as one that was proud to be English but now I have a better lifestyle with people that actually respect each other and can go out til all hours in the local City, Perpignan, without any intimidating atmosphere, rely on a tansport system that works, a health system that is expensive, but works, no middle lane hoggers on the motorways, a summer that starts in March and goes on til October, no road tax unless I use the MWays, etc etc.
Oh and our bins are collected every day and not fortnightly LOL.

I'd leave, just need to become a qualified football coach or mountain bike guide.instructor and I'd be off like a shot! Shame I can't afford the training on my close to minimum wage

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 5/18/2008 8:04:19 AM | About the standard of livinging thing...
It was said on the news a couple of months ago that the standard of living (as far as how well off we are, in monetary terms) in the UK had only just passed the US for the first time.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 5/18/2008 9:24:41 AM | I did, I left the UK for 7 years, and only came back once during that time (that was christmas too see the folks). But I didn't go to the states or canada or any of the typical places were brits go, I moved to Iceland, and I can tell you it was the best move I ever made, I have more friends in Iceland than I do in the UK at the moment and the only reason I came back is cause the medical system out there sucks big style and since I had my injury I have come back to live with the folks again as it is hard for me now to look after myself. But if/when I get better I can tell you quite frankly that I would have no hesitation in leaving this country again... I don't know what it is about the UK, I just find it un-attractive and depressing. When I was in Iceland the landscape was amazing, the people warm hearted and friendly (unlike when I moved around in the UK) and everything was a breeze, there was no hystria, no regular beatings and knifings on a weekend night. It was everything that the UK isn't, and I have to say I loved every minute of it....would I go back...yes, but I would also love to live in Sweden or Norway as I have many good friends out there. I do not see my future in the UK, not unless something amazing happens that binds me here. | |

just an idea

I agree with you about the UK not being attractive and depressing, the UK and the culture over here just isn't really me at all.
Is it easy to emmigrate to Iceland, or anywhere for that matter?
I looked into emmigrating to America, but for one I can't undertsand any of the things that you need to do, and it's too hard to become a citizen over there anyway, it's like you have to be a doctor or something.

| leave england or not leave england Posted: 5/18/2008 10:57:07 AM | | Let those that want to leave, leave, if they have nothing good to say about the place, let them go and good riddance to bad rubbish, it's people like them with no backbone that has let the country get into the state it is in, but rather than run away bleating maybe they should've looked ahead to see where the problems was coming from, because we all do, but just too scared to admit it, immigration was one..... asylum seekers another, now it's too late, all these lefties can bugger off and forget it, well i don't want to share the same air as mental cases like them anyway so the further they go the better for my money | |
