I see nothing wrong with letting age take its course. Why cover your true hair color?

I haven't gone grey yet, except on my beard. I do have "male pattern baldness," and wouldn't dream of covering it. I will wear a hat to protect myself from the sun.

Hmmmmmmm...... I very recently donated my long hair to "charity". Now I'm basically bald. It will be interesting when it comes back in two ways:

1) how much white/grey is there?

2) will I now be dateless because I look older/unappealing with less hair?

When the experiment is over, I'll let you know how it turned out.

Cheers!

Ok here's what happened....

Fewer e-mails, IM's and dates. Sad but true.

My close friends tell me I look older, some were just amazed that I cut off all those long curls.

BUT I did still manage to find someone in spite of it all! He didn't know me when I had the long coloured hair, and he likes me just the way I am.

Going grey didn't change me, but it does affect people's perceptions.

Cheers!

I'm still so blonde.. the grey/silver.. is just blending in. Thank the (fill in the blank.)

In all honesty.. I was much more upset at my hair starting to stay at the winter-blonde stage. A bit darker than the summer-blonde. I just let by-gones be by-gones. Besides.. now I don't have to hear.. do you dye your hair? The looks I'd get when answering no were.. yeah.. uh-huh.. right. I had that allllllllllll my life. So.. now it's nice to just say.. no.. I think my winter color is becoming a more permanent patron.. instead of just being a summer guest.. but.. thanks for asking.

^^^ looks fine to me, cut very flattering (U in yellow shirt). That was a great thing you did donating your hair.

I color my hair; am very fair skinned, have brown hair, now with more grey this yr than last, & not all is silver. Went OMG before last hair appt LOL as I let it go for too long. It makes me feel good, look younger, sexier etc. Think I would look very washed out if I let it go grey.

Whenever I see a woman with grey hair I wonder why she leaves it like that - just looks so drab

At 51 I have a bit of grey - not a lot. And I guess I am proud of it. Finally let my natural hair color grow in after 25 years of blond, and I love my dark hair now.

What I wonder every time I see a woman who has dyed hair that is MUCH too dark or the wrong color for her - what's the point? If you are dying your hair to look better, at least choose the right color!

Soulfulness, your hair is so pretty and healthy looking - it must have been a lot of upkeep to stay blonde

Thanks, Fleur!
It was a lot of upkeep. Every 8 weeks, a weave and a cut - yeesh!
I credit my Mom for the good hair genes - she didn't turn grey until about 60, and my 59 yr old sis has very little grey.

I have long black hair, and started greying ..but have two natural grey streaks in my hair that I have had since I was young. of course it looks like "Morticia"lol
but the other grey hair that has come in time.... I credit that to much wisdom and learning, tough times and trials...
from raising children to grandchildren.. to work.. hahahhaa

Ive actually thought that I earned every one of them and have named each one after trials and children...so I fel as though I earned them
On men, I think its beautiful and love it when its just above thier ears and temple of grey...sexy it is to me. So to me grey hair is defining, beautiful, earned, regal, debonaire, and extremely sexxy..

So at the age of 49 now, I have never dyed my hair and will not dye it.

I think dyeing hair and wrinkles look quite "icky"... and fake.
so ..with that, I will remain dark and grey...

depends on your hair and skin tone...I have seen some very beautiful gray haired women but they always play up their features with the right hair cut and makeup.

White hair is beautiful too!

Personally, I am unsure of what I will do when the gray hits.... I'll play around with leaving it gray I think.

I've heard zinc helps to impede the graying process, as does blackstrap molasses in some vinegar water taken daily.... not sure I am that vain !!!

I was totally silver by my early 40's. I've been coloring my hair for the last 4 years and I'm going to stop for a while. the blonde highlights that are still hanging in there on top of the silver are really pretty! one more haircut or so and I'll be totally silver again!

I, too, recently cut off my long, long brown straight hair for Locks of Love ... I wondered what I would look like without it! turns out, my hair is naturally curly (something I didn't know when it was so long and heavy) ... and I feel 20 years younger with my shorter curly hair! my light strands of grey at the temples are staying there as long as I enjoy them! I can't imagine going to all the bother of coloring my hair for that tiny bit of grey that merely says I've earned a few grey hairs!

I LOVE natural hair on a man ... whatever the color ... it sounds sexist, I'm sure, but dyed hair on a man looks odd to me! ... or maybe it's just the unprofessional dye jobs on a man that look unnatural to me ... whereas, if a woman has BURGUNDY hair or BLUE hair or some other totally unnatural color, I think it's great and looks like an extension of her personality ... omg ... I'm sexist!

I agree that gray is aging as is dark-almost black hair. I like having highlights/lowlights put into mine. I waited until about 3-4 years ago to see a colorist, but I'm totally glad I did. It makes me feel a lot better and I get tons of compliments too...so it's noticed, in a good way!

Im a little self-conscious about my grey. It used to not bother me but recently it invaded my beard. I don't even get the benefit of "5 o'clock shadow" anymore. The grey comes in first before the black hairs so now I have to shave everyday or look like hungover goon. At least, most of my grey is at my temples. Reed Richards cool!!

This thread is old. Can I please get a fresh perspective on what people think of women and grey hair? Also, length - if grey, is it better to be long or short and sassy? I'm not talking about the short and granny look, more short and modern.

I know it's a personal choice, but just when is it good to "go natural"? I am thinking of a major change on my 55th birthday but I'm nervous about it.

I have seen more than a few women who have absolutely beautiful gray/white locks and it suits them perfectly in that they continue to be not only gray but very attractive. My hair did this weird change after menopause...lost aall highlights and went to this very dark/blackish gray. YUK----! Just the occasional white/gray at the temples and on top.

And that's when the fun began! Color, color, color everywhere! A little "praline", a little blonde highlights, sometimes one, sometimes both....new cuts, too...the wonderful thing about hair is that it grows! I say go for the big change!! Find a beautician you trust who will walk you through your concerns....have fun and enjoy the "experiments" because........why not??!!

Obviously it's a very personal choice....

For me, I felt like I was a slave to my hair.
My hair turned in my early 20's and I dyed it for 20+ years.
It got to the point my hair was resisting the dye and in less than 2 weeks I had shiny bright roots.
About 6 years ago I said to hell with it......stopped dying and within 2 months my roots were a couple inches long.....and I had all my hair cut down to the silver.
I have since grown it back out.......and I absolutely love my hair.
It is healthier than it's been in years, and I get far more compliments now than I ever did with it colored....and throw in the fact I have saved a tremendous amount of money!!

My biggest issue now is what to do with these half white eyebrows?!!

MsMicki - you inspire me. That's the same for me - I turned in my 20's and now I think my hair is almost all white. That sounds like what I am thinking of doing - growing it a couple of months and then just cutting it to a couple inches long. I'm just trying to get up the courage.

I think, red bikini goes very well with silver hair.

My hair grows SO FAST that it was costing me a fortune to keep it up, and my original hair color is dark, so those white roots were almost immediate. I decided to stop coloring it after my daughter's wedding and it took a full year, but I feel pretty good about it. I'm growing it long and using a knock-off of Wen (Hair One, available at Sally Beauty Supply) and it has never been healthier. People who know me say it suits me very well and tell me to NEVER color it again. But I, too, wonder, if it sends a message to men that I am older than I am. Still, I wouldn't ever color it dark again - maybe some blonde highlights if I felt adventurous!

I'm occasionally tempted to cover the increasing silver highlights in my hair. However, it's expensive and a bother and I don't want hair that looks artificial. I don't wear makeup, either, for similar reasons. It doesn't seem to hold me back.
