| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/10/2008 11:13:39 PM | Just in response to your very narrow minded view that perhaps sometimes is true but really mostly is not....Being a florist and knowing it isn't a big money making business there are alot of factors to take into consideration...costs that you or I would never fathom...Val's day is not a money spinner when you really think about it....you could say that about alot of things...Easter perhaps since that is coming up...Easter eggs are only a marketing thing taken from the original meaning of painted eggs , not chocolate, meant for the meaning of a 'new life'...but these days it just gets carried away....and what about christmas?..... Val's day isn't a money making scam (within floristry)..think about all the extra pple you employ...the flowers come to us costing twice as much...the water surplus is horrendous, Interflora has new products which we have to buy to fill their orders and cost the earth.( keeping in mind they take 25% of each order) ..the wastage...all has to be taken into perspective...keeping in mind that you young fluffs out there wouldn't work the hours for the money and no break or overtime....this is not a 'frilly' job....and it certainly isn't for the faint hearted on days such as Val's day....
N:B the grass is always greener on the other side...

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 4:17:53 AM | Valentines Day is celebrated, because of a priest named Valentine. He lived in Rome under the rule of a emperor named Claudius. In the Roman empire wars broke out. Claudius summoned the citizens to go to battle. The wars went on for years and many of the roman men did not want to go to war, they dident want to leave their wifes and families and girlfriends. Ther were very few soldiers, this mad the emperor very mad, so he made a decree that there were to be no maggiages celebrated and that all engagements must be broken off immediately. When priest Valentine hear of the decree he was very sad, When a young couple came to him, he secretly married them. Others came and were quitly he married them in front of the scared altar. Valentine was a friend of lovers in every district in Rome. When news of what Vatentine was doing reached the palace Claudius the Cruel as he was know. In a dungeon Valentine launguised and died. His devoted friends buried him in the church of St. Praxedes. When you go to Rome you can see the very place. It was the year 270, on the fourteenth of February.
So my friends Valentines has not got anything to do with the U.S.A. it is in fact from Rome.
Happy Valentines Day All.

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 6:02:05 AM | ~ ~ ~ Interesting post Dizzybell!
I am not into commercialism and my kids were not brought up that way. I must say though, my ex, with all his faults often brought me flowers, this included valentines day.. it was always just a bunch from the local supermarket or whatever.... I love flowers and I miss receiving them (it does not have to be an expensive floral arrangement from the florist) Occassionally these days, I buy myself a bunch.
Anyway, the first Valentines day on my own, I went to work in the CBD area of Melbourne and was reminded, everywhere I looked, that is was Valentines Day and it made me feel lonely.
I come home that night from work and my daughter, who was 16 at the time, had a cute love heart chocolate for me, a small bunch of flowers and a sweet valentines day card.
It is a "moment" that I will not forget, I guess, she sensed how I was gonna be feeling that day. My baby girl is now 20 and I still call her "my baby girl" and she loves it.

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 6:07:55 AM | | I think some people need to take a chill pill.Commercialism is here every day of the year. While i agree that it shouldn'd take a particular day too show someone that you care about them,i see nothing wrong in having a day thats for love.If you hate it ,i guess your partner shouldn'd expect anything should they. When i was with Shell,it was more about spending some quality time with each other.During the year i liked to suprise her with flowers or chocolates for no particular reason.Sometimes it might of been a wheelbarrow, some chicken wire or a shovel.Whilst during the year we liked to have some our time as well and do something nice for each other.Valentines day was a day which we took time out from our busy lives to,run a bubble bath, have a drink and just talk, have music playing in the background, take turns to cook a nice meal at home, give each other a massage,ok you got me,i was thinking about i might get lucky too.Sure we had these nights at other times during the year, valentines day was a day we made sure was a day for us.You can think of valentines day as a day of commercialism or a day to spend some quality time with someone to say i care about you. It's your choice, make it what you want. | |

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 11:37:41 AM | Valentines day is probably one of the most over rated days of the year but good to give different surprises. I would be happy to put a big hairy huntsman spider in a box and wrap it up. Do it around 30 minutes prior of course to make sure its still alive when opened.
hmmm who will be my valentine?

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 12:20:14 PM | In elementary school, the Day of Love means innocent pink-frosting cupcakes and a Sponge Bob or Bratz Valentine from everyone in the class. Maybe even from a Secret Admirer! Now, the tip of Cupid's arrow sometimes seems to bring more loath than love, more duty and diligence than desire.
It's the anticipation of knowing exactly what to expect that ruins Valentine's Day, in my opinion. While some singles dread being lost in the "cutesy-ness" of couples, most girls, I think, would agree that nothing could be more romantic than a dozen roses, especially when they actually come as a surprise. A single rose or a beautiful bouquet is always appreciated when they are given sincerely. Receiving flowers, however, on a day when they are anticipated can hardly be considered romantic, especially when many times it is the only day of the year flowers will be given.....because they are "supposed" to be given.
Unless couples can keep the romancing up throughout the entire year, the aftermath of Valentine's Day will usually last just as long as it takes the obligatory roses to wilt or for the credit card bill to arrive. While guys have it far easier in the store as far as gift selection goes, they'll probably be quick to agree they get hit much harder in the wallet.
With a broader interpretation for Valentine's Day, the day can be lots fun. Money and planning aside, Valentine's Day can be more than just a reason to market a new color assortment of M&Ms. (Although that, in itself, is almost a reason to celebrate! Come on, pink and red M&Ms???) Guy and girls alike.....grab a friend and go have fun and celebrate your empowering independence! Couples..... romance the night away! But some of you should take heed to how quickly the affection wanes on February the 15th.

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 1:08:38 PM | I better hurry up if I'm gonna get any Valentine's greetings....only two days left! Gotta go to town today - maybe I can pick up a hitch hiker and keep him captive until Thursday? (None who look like they might have spiders lurking in their pockets tho!)
My 12 year old brought home a note saying red roses would be available for $5 a stem at school (high school) to give your valentine...it's a fund raiser - and I think it's wrong. I disagree strongly - keep it out of school. At least officially.

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 2:48:54 PM | My 13yo son has the same thing going on at his school, all the kids are running around in a panic wondering what to do. But i have to own up here and say i did cough up the $5 ...he really does have his heart set on someone and it seems reciprocal and would feel kind of wrong if she made the effort and he didn't. " And who said peer group pressure was dead" ..lol | |

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/11/2008 4:41:54 PM | Valentine's Day... hmmm like we need a special day to tell close ones we love them ? Do we treat them with contempt the other 364/5 days a year ? :o)
Bahhhh humbug !
Unless someone sends me one of course !!

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/12/2008 12:10:23 AM | | I noticed a few people who don't think much of Valentine's Day. But have any of you ever said no to any gifts you've been given by any of your past partners? If not, then is that being hypocritical? | |

|
| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/12/2008 2:27:18 AM | My evil side is emerging. If i knew where Naamah worked i'd have a dozen red roses delivered while she was in class in front of her students just to annoy her. Then i'd pray she'd never find out where i live cos i don't fancy the thought of her beating me up with those dozen red roses. | |

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/12/2008 4:53:30 AM | | Maybe I'm the only one who sees things this way, but if a partner of mine gets me something for Valentine's Day then I wouldn't treat it as my "divine right" to expect and receive whatever she gets me. And I wouldn't be disappointed and/or pi$$ed off if she did nothing. The point of it all is that whatever we get, it's a GIFT, not a RIGHT. I could be wrong here, but I think those who see something wrong with the idea of giving and receiving things on Valentine's Day have the kind of mindset that their partner HAS TO get them something, rather than being grateful if it actually happens. Somebody please set me on the right path if I've made all the wrong assumptions here :) | |

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/12/2008 5:20:22 AM | ^^^ Nah, I don't have a mindset of expectation, but I think the whole Valentines Day machine tries to tell me that I should have one. Nobody is against romance, gestures, or roses. Some people just believe that any demonstrations of love should stem from a natural desire to do so rather than a predetermined date. Most who aren't excited by Val Day are saying so because they feel that romance required by social dictates is not true romance at all.
Saying "I love you" because you just couldn't NOT say it for another second or you would have exploded with it... ...not, oh yer, I love you cos it's Feb 14th.
But, whatever throws your confetti, right. Valentines Day junkies should just revel in it and enjoy.

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/12/2008 5:23:11 AM | If someone presents me with a weed I'll be happy. And that's a weed not some weed! Valentines day will come and go, just as it has for the past ten years. | |

| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/13/2008 12:51:10 AM | "In Msg5 ^^^ TPaganW dismissed Valentines Day as "Another sh**ty Yank tradition". Then expressed his contempt for the celebratees using sh**ty americanized spelling. "
"celebratees" No ... celebrates you ass
|
| Valentines Day - Your Thoughts Posted: 2/13/2008 1:11:03 AM | ^^^ Remember the old saying TPaganW?
"It's better to be thought a fool, than to post and remove all doubt."
I'd love it if you would explain how your comprehension difficulties make me an 'ass'.
