Dammit people, stop letting us get bumped to the second page.
I know. We've been busy arguing in the Flames thread...the only reason that thread hasn't shuffled off the mortal coil. Back to the Oilers and to Canada winning the gold.

| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/24/2008 2:16:26 PM | GARON AND GAGNER NAMED TO TEAM CANADA
Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mathieu Garon and forward Sam Gagner have been added to the roster of Team Canada for the upcoming 2008 IIHF World Championship.
With the addition of Garon and Gagner to Team Canada, the Oilers now have three players on the national team roster as defenceman Steve Staios had previously been named to the team on April 8th.
Garon appeared in 47 games during his first season with the Oilers and compiled a 26-18-1 record with a 2.66 goals-against average, a .913 save percentage and was ninth in the NHL with four shutouts. Fourteen of his wins came in overtime as he was 14-1 in the extra session and he was a perfect 10-0 in shootouts, stopping 30 of 32 shootout attempts.
Gagner enjoyed a remarkable rookie season with the Oilers in 2007-08, scoring 13-36-49 in 79 games to finish third on the Oilers scoring list and fifth in scoring among NHL rookies. The 18-year-old forward was among the NHL rookie leaders in goals (11th), assists (3rd), powerplay goals (4th with 4), powerplay assists (7th with 12), powerplay points (7th with 16), shots (7th with 135) and shooting percentage (10th at 9.6%). He led NHL rookies and was tied for second in the NHL with four shootout deciding goals.

| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/24/2008 6:01:27 PM | Wasn't Mctavish appointed as assistant coach as well...
Garon is an inspiration to other goalies in the league, and Gagner IS EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD!!
Diss the Oilers club now... I dare ya.
Bravo boys!! | |
|
| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/24/2008 8:01:29 PM | Neither of them will see the ice, but it will be especially good for Gagner just to be in the dressing room with those guys. You know that he'll be invited to the 2010 camp so this can only help.
As for Garon, I'm not a fan. He was the better of a bad tandem in Edmonton but until Lowe gets a quality goalie the Oilers are not going to be any kind of major threat. Sorry gang, but Garon just isn't there. Not saying he never will be, but he'll have to improve quite a bit from this season.
He was 29th in goals against average among goalies who appeared in at least 10 games this season and his save percentage was 22nd overall. That's nothing better than average. Yes, he was great in the shootout, but had he been better in regulation, the games wouldn't have gone the extra time. The Oilers had the lead at some point in 7 of those 10 shootout games and in five of those games their opponent scored in the final three minutes of regulation.
And he clearly tired near the end of the season (before his injury).
Just my two cents' worth.
...but it is nice to see he got the invite, Hopefully he can draw from it as well.

| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/24/2008 9:17:17 PM | well thats fine and dandy, i don't completely agree with all that! if I had said Montreal was going to be first in the East this year, everyone probably would have thought i was mad, they would have laughed harder if i said leafs, but here we are and look how it was! So im pretty sure the Oilers will be just fine! | |

| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/25/2008 4:10:52 AM | "if I had said Montreal was going to be first in the East this year, everyone probably would have thought i was mad, they would have laughed harder if i said leafs, but here we are and look how it was!"
That's true. However, if you had said "Montreal will challenge for first as soon as Carey Price is ready for the NHL" peple wouldn't have mocked you as much. What Price is doing is no surprise. It's what Montreal expected, when they picked him fifth overall. It's just a surprise that he's doing it so young.

| Avery Posted: 4/25/2008 10:35:03 AM | So Avery, who we all love to hate, wants to be a fashion editor when he 'grows up'. He's apparently interning at Vogue this year whenever his season ends.

Personally, I think it's hilarious.

| Avery Posted: 4/27/2008 2:11:22 PM | Hehe...gotta give him credit, he's been linked to a bevy of beauties throughout his career and now he lands this plum job. It's like tossing a fox into a hen house...PARTY TIME!! Oh well, cue the obligatory paternity suits in a year or two. | |

| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/27/2008 9:33:23 PM | I thought he was 19 I thought they changed the rules with that new CBA that you had to be 19 to play in the nhl or crosby would have been drafted a year ealier PS great game for Canada Under 18 Soccer/football game smoking Germany 12-0 that one kid Antorioz can play scoring 9 of the goals Germany didn't help themself with 4 of their kids getting red carded in the first 22 mins.
sorry off topic my mind has been wandering around the last 2-3 days.
|
| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/27/2008 9:39:41 PM | | Hmm I think Garon is great and should be the #1 goalie I can't remember but I think in every shootout game he was in he won.10 or 12 games and I think he was only scored on once. I'll let Fox dig up that news but he's an awesome goalie the Kings hoewver left him out to dry so many times. At least the Oilers have a better defense than the Kings did and help him I rank Garon right along with Kipper and Huet | |
|
| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/27/2008 10:30:50 PM | ^And this is why................... God invented BEER!!
lol
Garon did not get an entire year as starter goalie to prove himself... I feel good about him. Better than I felt with Roli in his place!
I think over this season, he sparked, and we will see a new and improved Garon in the future!!
Come on season 2008-09. WOOOOOoooooo, oh...... there is still snow outside :(

| We Won the Gold! Posted: 4/28/2008 3:58:32 AM | ^^^^^ Ranger: the NHL draft is for anyone who is 18 by September 10th of said draft year. And anyone who is drafted is eligible to play in the NHL, as long as they sign a contract. Sam Gagner, for instance, does not turn 19 until August of this year.
Both Crosby and Gagner were actually only 17 when they were drafted.

| The Name Game...errr...drunk and bored Posted: 4/30/2008 1:21:52 AM | Well, they always twist Hollywood movies to make titles for porno movies, so I thought I'd use that tactic to describe what happened tonight:
Rangers/Penguins:
March of the Penguins ---> April of the Penguins
Stars/Sharks:
Swimming with the Sharks ---> Drowning with the Sharks
Wings/Avs:
Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead ---> no change
Someone Behind The Door --> Something Behind Theodore
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I know, I know...the first round knockout of the Flames should have been called the Crying Game (no change again).

| The Name Game...errr...drunk and bored Posted: 4/30/2008 4:00:55 AM | Things To Do in Dever When You're dead That is classic
I will say this much for that game last night: The refs sure seemed to have it in for Forsburg. Detroit was allowed to run roughshod over him and any time he did anything he was sent to the box. And how many players are you allowed to have on the ice at any one time? Detroit should have had at least 4 too many men penalties. They got caught once. The refs absolutely blew chunks last night. And considering I could care less who wins the seriesI guess that makes it a fairly objective observation.
|
| The Name Game...errr...caffeine deficient Posted: 4/30/2008 5:18:18 AM | Yeah, I pretty much saw the same thing. Poor ole Forsburg was definitely having a rough night. I think there were 2 too many men calls one after the other too, and it didn't stop then either, just the calls for it. Ditto on the "I don't really care one way or the other" either, but I was shaking my head about the officiating too. Doesn't look like THIS is Smytty's year either. Shoulda stayed in Oil Country And I'll toss in a Go Habs! | |
|
| The Name Game...errr...drunk and bored Posted: 4/30/2008 9:12:03 AM | Yeah prairie, I was rooting for the Avs, but there definitely a bias in the officiating. I remember that double minor to Forsburg, which was followed by another minor shortly thereafter. Crazy! And, you're right about the too many men thing...how could so many people - other than the zebras on the ice - catch those infractions and they seemed to miss them time and again?!? Oh well, this series is done.
PS. What the hell is Franzen eating this year? The guy has turned into a ...dare I say it...monster of the playoffs...*vomit*
|
| Who to like now? Posted: 5/3/2008 6:54:02 PM | Well, no Canadian teams left in the playoffs. Hmmm...who do we root for now. In terms of ex-Oilers, I guess it would have to be Philly. It's nice to see Gator and even Lupul go deep in the playoffs, but I still hate that freak of nature, Hatcher. Other than that, I like the Penguins and they have Georges Laraque, so I'd be happy to see them go all the way. Other than that, hate the Wings and I'm indifferent about the Sharks and the Stars. | |
|
| Who to like now? Posted: 5/3/2008 7:10:42 PM | I'll cheer for the Penguins and tick, if it's ex-oilers you're counting, you forgot a couple of Penguins: Sykora and Conklin. That's not why I'd like to see them win though. They just remind me of toe Oilers of the early 80s ... they're by far the most exciting team to watch in these playoffs.
The guy who picked last (12th) in our draft has 7 flyers and 5 stars. Guess he wins lol
|
| Who to like now? Posted: 5/3/2008 7:25:50 PM | ^ You are correct, sir. My bad. I almost forgot about those 2 because I'm trying to purge any memories of them. I love the Penguins and with 3 ex-Oilers on them, it's a no-brainer, so...Go Penguins Go!!
I guess the only upside to the Habs being eliminated is that I don't have hear Vertigo after every frickin' goal!!!
guy who picked last (12th) in our draft has 7 flyers and 5 stars. Guess he wins lol Ouch! Nice picking, though.
|
| Who to like now? Posted: 5/3/2008 8:54:47 PM | I hear ya on trying to forget those two .. although I really don't have anything against Sykora. At least he played out the terms of his contract.
As for Conklin kudos for him getting back to the bigs. Still trying to figure out how he did it though lol
And yeah good picks by the guy in our pool but even he admitted it wasn't by design ... that's the only team that wasn't touched by the time the picks got to him lol
