you know the worst part about Penner not 'showing' up? is that Burke was right.
Penner was not ready for that and Burke said so, damn I hate that he seems to be right.

lets hope that MacT has beat some sense into those guys....

The thing about Jason Arnott was that there were nights when he absolutely dominated games, then others where he "Pennered" . Dustin is missing the first part of that equation. (Incidentally, that's a new term for not showing up - "Pennering". I hope I haven't somehow insulted the gays and lesbians of Canada. )

As for Burke being right, yep... said it at the time and I'll say it again. What Burke said wasn't popular, and the idea of Lowe calling him prior to tell him what he was going to do was preposterous, but it was indeed "a desperate signing by a desperate GM".

We're playing Chicago tonight Uber. I know it's confusing for you because they both start with a C but Colorado and Chicago are different teams. We beat Colorado when they came to visit in January.

Penner has potential; he's still a kid when it really comes to hockey - he's only 23. He's become MacT's whipping boy - I said that before the article came out yesterday echoing my thoughts on Penner. He's been misused for a lot of this season but because he's not one of MacT's favourites, he's trotted out and publicly smacked on a regular basis this season. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve some of it; his play hasn't exactly been stellar this year. Name one player whose name isn't Hemsky, Souray or Cogliano whose play isn't subpar. MacT has to deflect the heat on him somehow and Penner has become his target. MacT's coaching decisions this season have been so bizarre nothing surprises me anymore and has given his opinion on players' abilities little to no credibility.
I suppose I should add Roli to my list of players who perform as he's been playing like his 06 self for the most part.

Dustin Penner turns 27 this year. It's time for him to grow up.

My point was that Colorado's got the potential to push you out of a playoff spot. :P

4 points is a pretty small margin.

Here's hoping you keep Chicago from breathing down our necks here up at the top though. You keep them from getting 2 points tonight, and we'll make sure Dallas doesn't pull 2 points ahead of you guys, k?

Chicago has absolutely no relevance to Calgary. As long as the Flames win their division, they will hold one of the top three playoff positions. The only way the Blackhawks can pas the Flames is if they somehow catch Detroit. So, in essence, Calgary holds a 9-point cushion on Chicago.

True. I agree, but Chicago's position relative to us determines who we'll get matched with in the playoffs, unless I'm horrible mistaken.

Anaheim would be a killer for us in the first round. I'm hoping they take a dive and end up against San Jose or Detroit. I'd much rather see us facing Vancouver, Edmonton (yes, I said it) or even Dallas than Anaheim.

oops my bad - he was brought onto the Ducks when he was 23 - my intent was to say he's in his 3rd season. He's still developing. I just hope this will help rather than hinder his development because you have to admit he has the skill. Why he doesn't have the desire, who's to say? I wouldn't blame him for hating the coach, although that should be no excuse. He's handled himself very well in the media though, which is more than can be said about MacTavish.

Here you go, Smilie.
A little bit of even-handed rational for you, instead of the ever-fun Penner bashing session du jour by those still firmly in the kool-aid aisle.

http://communities.canada.com/edmontonjournal/blogs/hockey/archive/2009/02/02/with-all-due-respect-penner-ain-t-the-problem.aspx

Whatever we do, let's just keep on making sure we don't let the responsiblity for the mediocrity fall where it truly lies. No matter what players come or go, truly, there has been one constant through the last 8 years of under-achievement... but god forbid we ever ask our beloved coach to take a look in the mirror, hmmm?

I'll be totally honest. The thing that scares me the most about Edmonton right now is the possibility of you kids getting a new coach.

Seriously.

Why would we get a new coach...
we're in a good spot with games in hand on most teams. ( minus minny and anaheim )
unless a major drop in the standings happens
expect no changes.
in my opinion come summer... they should switch and maybe help fix
this inconsistency problem.
torterella is still rumoured to be the number one choice but i think
they should go talk to dale hunter in london =P

srjo...there are some who think the Oilers are one coach away from a Stanley Cup and cannot accept any other logical explanation for them not being in first place overall in the league standings

Some of these people also believed Mathieu Garon was the next coming of Patrick Roy. So... you know...

srjo83 - this is why we need a new coach
http://www.oilersnation.com/2009/02/fire-craig-mactavish/
I think we are a coach away from a more solid playoff position towards the top of our division rather than this yo-yo we're stuck on. Garon certainly wasn't our answer to our goaltending issues. I don't think Roli is either although he has been playing really well this season. I am hoping Deslauriers will be a worthwhile investment.
Thanks for the article SmartToy. Penner is MacTavish's smoke and mirrors, deflecting the heat off of himself. Every season is starting to look like the movie Groundhog Day.

the fact of the matter is they will not change the coach now. not while they are in a playoff race. and sitting in 4th.
it would take a new coach about 10 games to get in the groove. and by that time they could fall out of the playoffs.
and i dont see kevin firing his friend of.... god how many years?? if the oilers made the playoffs.
so the only way macT would get fired was if the oilers didnt make the playoffs for the 3rd straight year. and NO Oiler fan wants that.
can we promote MacT?? MacT GM?? hahaha

He'll be gone if the Oielrs miss the playoffs.
What makes me laugh is the suggestion that he is using Dustin Penner as some kind of whipping post.
Is it possible, just possible, that Dustin Penner is getting his just desserts, based on him being overpaid, underachieving and lazy?
Yes it is.
He is the highest paid forward on the team. it's time he starts playing like it.

Thanks for the article SmartToy. Penner is MacTavish's smoke and mirrors, deflecting the heat off of himself. Every season is starting to look like the movie Groundhog Day.

No problem, Smilie - I just prefer people get to see something along the lines of a rational opinion, instead of the misguided flailings often put out by a chosen few here. Like, as an example, those short-sighted few who point out that he is supposed to "produce like the team best forward" because he is being paid like it, despite the circumstances & timing that led to said contract by Lowe, and the fact the team has more money tied up in Hemsky & Horcoff the next three seasons than they do Penner.

So, for those who need them - more examples (for those who have complained here that he isn't performing like the team's best forward), let's do a comparison to Horcoff. Now, being a MacT favorite has let to Horcoff getting prime minutes non-stop & never once being subjected to any coaching scrunity to date this year, yet Penner has (despite being misued, sat, and having choice PP time taken from him by MacT):
Penner has the 2nd best Points/60mp on the team, while...
Horcoff has the 8th best Points/60mp on the team.
Hmmmm..... shall we look further?
add in that
Penner has the best GFON/60mp on the team, while...
Horcoff has the 5th best GFON/60mp on the team.
The conclusion is simple - when given the opportunity, the guy produces at a consistent rate, despite having repeated impediments thrown in front of him - despite what MacT would erroneously trumpet.

Now, having a 1rst line center on pace for around 53 points isn't going to win you many Cups, and yet magically Horcoff escapes MacT "even-handed" approach.
In the end, we all want the Oilers to succeed. Yet, this kind of approach simply is misguided, flawed, and continues to deflect the blame from MacT's inability to get the most from what he is given... something that 8 years of consistent inconsistency have illuminated clear as day to every Oiler fan out there.
Drinkers of kool-aid, or no.

The bottom line is - the one thing that needs to change to make a dynamic, systemic change in E-town isn't the revolving player door that MacT forces. It is MacT himself.
