That excuse is not only old, but also inaccurate. The team’s top two offensive players, Horcoff and Hemsky, have played together as a line, nearly untampered with, for four years and have yet to reach that plateau. Horcoff's best year...22 goals. Hemsky's...20. That's the top line, folks. Those are the top two players on a team that some people believe should be contending for top spot in the conference. Just think about that for a bit.
And the other side of that coin would be, if they started producing, there would be no reason to keep changing lines. But MacT is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, I guess.
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/5/2009 8:35:42 AM | Hafta agree to disagree on that one I guess. I will agree that Hemsky and Horcoff do play together alot, however TWO forwards likely does not make an effective line when mixed with whatever the cat drags in IMO.
As for the excuse being old, it still is reality so until it's no longer accurate it still has merit, just as it did when it was new.
Now regarding the "start producing = not changing/juggling lines" agrument, how would a person explain Cole and Gagner being separated a few weeks back when it appeared obvious, even to the media, that they seemed to click playing together.
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/5/2009 9:16:06 AM | It's my understanding you can't trade injured players so the likelihood of Lubo going anywhere is slim to none. Horcoff certainly doesn't have the game he had last year. I'm hoping he finds it again. Grey don't even try to figure out why the lines are mixed as they are. It's like throwing the names into a helmet and pulling one out - okay you go next. I wouldn't be surprised to see Reddox made into a defenseman because we need one right now. Getting rid of the coach right now (even though we desperately need to be rid of him) would mean we're throwing in the towel on the season and I don't think anyone in Oiler country is ready for that. I think even if we make it to the first round, MacT should go once the season is done. Maybe he can leave with a little dignity left. | |

Mark this date down smilie. We finally agree (at least on everything but the part in parentheses). I'll even go so far as to say I agree that they should consider replacing him in the off-season. Although I don't think that will be an issue. He will resign before the axe falls. The company will likely do some fancy re-shuffling and find a position upstairs for him, a-la Kevin Lowe, last summer.

| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/5/2009 12:49:08 PM | i don't see how we lose one defenseman and everyone wants to go trade for bouwmeester because we are desperate for a d-man.. i think the defense will do just fine. we have 6 nhl ready defenseman are they all nik lidstroms? no but they should be able to hold things together for a playoff run. i just dont get why all of you would like to see visnovsky traded first season new team, you gotta expect some ill chemistry... remember the season peca had? that was one bad season but in the playoffs, he was a new player. oilers fans had there fingers crosses he would stay. i'm glad he didnt i think souray visnovsky need to be here long term if we're gonna build a good future around a core of players.. you cant just trade every week of the season the forwards are the ones that need help.. do i dare say... craig simpson is big time missed... i think so | |

| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/5/2009 1:06:36 PM | i think the defense will do just fine. we have 6 nhl ready defenseman are they all nik lidstroms? no but they should be able to hold things together for a playoff run. They can't even approach competence when it come to getting the dang puck outta their own end much of the time, let alone helping the netminder that they're repeatedly tossing in front of a firing squad.
As far as singling out Vishnovsky is concerned, I actually have no problem with him personally (actually think he's one of the better ones we have) other than the huge bite outta our teams salary that he commands for really nothing special. I guess "maybe" in time, but I've heard that before (look at Penner). Honestly, even Souray leaves a little bit to be desired when it comes to solid defense, but he more than makes up for it with the offense he brings to the table.

Honestly, even Souray leaves a little bit to be desired when it comes to solid defense, but he more than makes up for it with the offense he brings to the table. Souray has never been a good defensive defenceman. That's not what he's paid for. He's paid for his shot from the point and the fact that he'll stick up for his teammates. But defensively, he's never been an asset to any team. He was a -28 with 85 giveaways his last year in Montreal. With Souray, you have to take the good with the bad. Vish was supposed to be marginally better in his own end, but the main reason for that acquisition was again a puck-moving (ie offensive) defenceman who could quarterback a power play.
But as mediocre as the team's D is in their own end, take away their offence and the Oilers are dead last in the league.

| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/6/2009 7:13:18 AM | thank goodness for Roli - if it wasn't for him last night... Reddox for the shoot out? seriously? "Marty Sakic" Reddox anyone??? | |
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/6/2009 8:27:43 AM | What happened to Gilbert last night? I was working so I missed the game, but I hear he only played 11 minutes. | |
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/6/2009 8:58:58 AM | | Really, I watched the game and didn't notice anything happening to Gilbert that looked notable. I was surprised to hear that he wasn't coming back for the third honestly | |
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/6/2009 9:20:17 AM | | word is back spasms. They should make the whole team do pilates on a regular basis and then they wouldn't have back problems. It would make them more agile too. | |
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/6/2009 7:45:09 PM | | they did try pilates... Moreau did them all wrong but tried harder then everyone else, Staois couldnt quite keep up but threw himself on a puck anyway, Penner could do them but couldnt be bothered and word is that J.F. Jacques hurt something and is out indefineately. Oh, and Roli did the whole set so well he ended up making them all look good. :P | |
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/6/2009 8:54:14 PM | word is he's hurt? he just got activated from the IR | |
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/7/2009 7:16:50 AM | EARLY GAME! (1 o-clock) Can't blame me if ya snooze through this one Fox.
Looks like the slump has ended for the Wings before they got to us. Lets hope the oilers can rekindle that.
GO OIL!!! | |

| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/7/2009 9:21:46 AM | Or we ended ours before getting to them!
Is the game televised? | |

Thank god, we're usually the cure for another teams long slump!
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/7/2009 10:48:26 AM | SEE!! I would have missed today's game if not for you Grey!
(next, I'll have you reporting live via POF) ... lol
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/7/2009 11:34:57 AM | back to back 1 oclock starts. lets hope that the team who won in stlous shows up. | |
|
| |
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/7/2009 11:48:51 AM | Hey, I didn't really think of it from that angle Patent. That actually makes me feel more optomistic. And Fox, I kinda have this silly jinx thing down-pat so I generally try and shut the cakehole til after the credits role. No live reporting from this corner. Lastly, I'll second that comment srjo, or even better still, how about the team that played Wild in their last meeting. Not to mention I hope that's who shows up tomorrow too.

So props to MacT for finally finding a place where Penner fits in (sorry...couldn't resist) If Penner was that bad of a player then your comment would have some merit. Penner's numbers aren't that bad this season compared to the rest of the team. Here we go again - 4-0 now - another blow out. No wonder Detroit can afford to play Conklin, they have a team ahead of him.
|
| Hockey Rules!!! Posted: 2/7/2009 12:45:07 PM | call the cops... its 5-0.
