Scratch the Kovalev suggestion. I forgot that he played right wing.

Oilers make their coaching change
Posted: 2/18/2009 12:01:29 PM
Anybody else thinking Jay Bouwmeester? UFA this summer. I'm a believer of "Homegrown" talent..........A guy born and raised in Oil country just might want to come "Home". I'd trade Cole (and maybe even throw in Smid) for him anyday. Cole and Smid just aren't livin' up to expectations.

Also, wondering what it would cost to bring Smyth back..........we lost heart and soul when we lost him. Bring him back!

Cole is a UFA this summer so it makes no sense for Florida to trade for him.
Bouwmeester would be nice but really, how many puck-carrying defencemen do we need? I can't see the Oilers going after Bouwmeester unless they get rid of one of their top-three defencemen. What the Oilers really need to do this summer is get a top goalie. Nick Backstrom and Tim Thomas are both UFAs. I'd go hard for Backstrom before Bouwmeester if I were GM

I don't see Cole as a Bruin. He's a right winger. He would not be any improvement over Wheeler, Ryder or even Kobasew. But if they want to trade Tim Thomas for him, I'm sure Tambellini could be talked into that.

Are you kidding me??? We do not need the ghost of Oilers past to visit us a third time thank you very much. We have enough grinders on this team. Yeah we really feel the lack of a good faceoff guy but that's a skill which can be taught and Brodziak and Penner seem to be pretty good students. I'd rather bring back Peca than Marty "Sakic" Reasoner.

Well.. Ryan Smyth is on the block (although I think that bridge has been thoroughly torched. I doubt he'd waive his NTC to come back here)

Ryan Smyth hasn't exactly been lighting it up for the Avs the two seasons he's been with them. We have to stop revisiting the past and look to the future; that goes for coaches and players.

He'd probably just go back to the old tradition of crying a lot while he played for Edmonton.

As for not lighting it up, I'd say he's one of the better players the Avs have, and is having a pretty decent season this year.

The way I see it we have to stop looking at the future and do something for the present. I'm tired of this "team looks good for the future" stuff.

Smyth may not exactly be lighting it up, but he has more goals than anyone on the Oilers this season and currently has more points than anyone not named Ales.

I'm not really overly interested in seeing him come back either (I'd love to see it but can live without it), but I'd sure hate to see him end up in a place like Vancouver.

If the Avs are potentially shopping him as a salary dump, we really can't afford to have him here either. Vancouver has a lot of their own worries - namely resigning UFAs whose last names start with S. Maybe we should dump a little of our own salary and pick up the Sedin sisters as UFAs. How do you think Hemsky would play with the likes of them?

Ha ha... now THAT would be a pick-up of dream proportions. I've never liked the "sisters" but I am sure I would change that tune if they had an ‘oil drop‘ on their chests.
I don't suspect they are going anywhere though. I would think they are priority 1 in Vancouver but talk about a mess there. The Canucks only have 5 forwards signed for next year and one of those is Darcy Hordichuk. They do have a lot of money (under $30M committed) but wow are they going to be busy.

Smyth may not be in his prime anymore, but I see him as a heart and soul type of guy that could bring a lot to the dressing room. For whatever reason, the team just doesn't seem to play with much chemistry this year and maybe "Captain Canada" could bring that spark back with him.

Also, regarding "Sedin's"........... Toronto, if they go anywhere.
Burke did what he had to do (trading deals at the draft table) in order to bring the brothers to the N.H.L. together on the same team. These are brothers that are "Inseparatable".
Love him or hate him, Brian Burke is extremely loyal to his players, and his players like to play for and are loyal to him as well.

Erik Cole looks to be on the move. There's been a lot of talk over the last couple of weeks that the Boston Bruins, without Marco Sturm due to injury, are heavily involved in any Cole talks. Some names mentioned heading back to the Oil - F Vladimir Sobotka, D Matt Lashoff, D Matt Hunwick.
I’m led to believe Cole could again be a Hurricane — the team he spent six seasons with. Names mentioned coming back - F Tuomu Ruutu, D Dennis Seidenberg, D Anton Babchuk.
And what about F Alexei Kovalev in Montreal? It appears as though he may be on his way out. Even-up swap for Cole?
Some other potential destinations for Cole - Pittsburgh, Buffalo, New Jersey, Philadelphia, NYR.
D Denis Grebeshkov is another guy that could be moved because of his upcoming RFA status, but unless its for another defenseman, its not gonna happen.
D Derek Morris could be on the Oilers radar with the recent injury to D Lubomir Visnovsky. Morris, an Edmonton product stated: "I like Edmonton. I was born there. Believe it or not, I do miss the snow, the weather, the four seasons. I don't miss the 40-below days… But we miss Alberta, we love Alberta."
Who else could be on the Oilers' wish list? D Jay Bouwmeester? F Chris Neil? F Bill Guerin? F Alex Frolov?
Thoughts?

Actually, I think the Sedin sisters would go well with Hemsky. They're finishers, kinda like Kurri was for Gretz. Can't see it happening though for the money front alone, not to mention Edmonton seems unattractive to players. (nasty 6 month Winters and all ) Still lotsa talk that Cole's heading to Boston, but I don't know what kinda deal might be in the works there.

Big game in a little while tonight. They've got a point, a win, and a game in hand on us, but we've won 2 of our 3 meetings.

GO OIL!!!

I must be losing it. I was sure they announced this trade during the pre-game show on sports net, but...........I see Penner still playing (on ice for second goal) and I've never known of a player still playing once trade is done.
This trade (although I'd still prefer Boumeester) wouldn't bother me as I feel Penner hasn't lived up to his expectations either.

No... that was a new feature, where viewers can email in suggestions for trades and the panel tells them (the viewers) how stupid they are
You must have tuned in halfway through

Your right RBG........I did.
When I tuned it in, both my son and I saw it written on the bottom of the screen as though it was a done deal and sort'a went ......."Whaaaat????"

As for a comment on the game.......well......."I HATE DALLAS !!!!!!!"

And I still don't see a lot of chemistry. Some, but not much. Lot of stupid penalties.
