Sheesh I hope not! Well now that all of the drama is over with the first round, I wonder what will happen as far as trades go. There are a ton of rumours out there. Evidently Heatley's stock dropped huge today too. I wouldn't mind picking up Heatley but Murray doesn't deserve a king's ransom for him.
Most interesting rumour - Horcoff to Montreal????

I'd rather see him develop in North America. Too many Swedes in the Swedish Elite League
As for Horcoff to Montreal, well, the Habs certainly can afford him. but wow... if Tambellini can get rid of that contract I say do it. We need as much extra money as we can get for next summer, when Gagner and Cogs are due for raises, as well as making a pitch at Rick Nash (ya ya, I know he'll never be an Oiler, but it's nice to dream ha ha)

Hey, if we can get a bag of used pucks for Horcoff to get him off of our books, I would be thrilled. Not much in the way of trades this year other then picks for picks. Hopefully it will be a wild week before we hit the big July 1.

Hopfully it is a sign we have gotten someone big to agree to sign with us and we are waiting for July 1 to announce it because of course, noone can talk to anyone before then :) Also I really like Brule, I have followed him a fair amount and he is amazing at the AHL level and really needs a good shot at NHL and should be good there.

Sp, the Flames signed Bouwmeester. Oilers signed... Rod Phillips. Oh, but they are close to getting a 40-year-old starter who likely would not start anywhere else in the league anyway.
Things are looking up!!!

Well the Oilers traded for Heatly, sending Cogliano, Penner and Smid the other way. But then Heatly said he won't waive his no trade clause to come here so the deal didn't go through. It is always so nice to feel so loved that way :)

Have a guy who says, "Trade me, I hate it here"
Ottawa "Okay, we got you a trade, your off to Edmonton"
Heatly "Oh god no, trade me anywhere else"

Dang prima dona players.

I guess Edmonton DOES sport the coldest climate in the entire NHL, but I don't think thats the only reason players don't wanna come here too fast. Things are improving however I think. I don't forsee Katz settling too much if it's reasonably realistic to obtain a winning team. That's what he said he wanted to own, right from the beginning. (now I just hope he's not merely another "talk is cheap" posterboy)

REAL interested in what happens over the next few weeks starting PDQ. I kinda suspect ya's nailed it in the last few posts with the "salary dump/future big prospect" comments but who knows nowadays. *fingers crossed anyhoo*

Heatley turns down Edmonton.
Gee thats really too bad. Edmonton would have been the perfect place for him.
It wouldn't interrupt with his annual Euro trip every spring.

This may be the best trade Edmonton never made.

I wasnt overly impressed with the word we were getting the 'I wanna trade' posterboy, but I did like the idea of Penner going in the other direction with the trade. It might of been interesting seeing if he meshed with Hemsky playing on the wing as well. I wont pretend to be sad about Heatley scuttling the deal though, as was just said, probably this will be the trade we were better off without. And, for the record, I like Roli, and would like to see him back here again.

Well Katz did try and open up the purse strings last year, he offered Hossa 9M a year, we would never have seen anything like that under the old owners. I am just hoping they learned this year not to put all their eggs in one basket as even with overpaying, it is hard to get players to want to come here. We are going to need to sign a few guys soon or we may end up having to hope all the Oilers troubles were with MacT, or else this could be a loooong season.

Well, Heatley's action should, if nothing else, dispel the idea that it was MacT that the big names didn't want to play for.
I didn't like the idea of losing Cogliano in that trade, but really, the rest of the trade was great... two REAL underachievers for the price of one PERCEIVED underachiever. Oh well.
Roli signs with Islanders for 2 years, 5 mil. Good for him. Anderson gone to Avs. Goalies getting slim. Josh Harding, perhaps? Or just let Deslauriers and Dubnyk have their chance in prime time. It's not like the team is one piece away from being a contender, anyway.

Beaverlodge boy Matt Walker strikes it rich with Tampa. That's a ton of money (4 years, 6.8M) to pay him, but good for him. Stability for him and his wife.

Yeah, kinda sad to see Roloson move on, and a 2 year deal no less, but as was already said, "good for Roli". Lookin' like we're probably just gonna throw Deslauriers to the wolves and see how he responds. Be an interesting season for sure.

I wouldn't mind seeing us sign Clemmensen out of NJ, he played amazing while Brodeur was hurt or even Biron from Philly. We really need to get Deslauriers some more experience before we make him a starter. Let him play 20-30 games this year and next and then he should be good to go.

Khabibulin signs. HUGE improvement over Roli (Khabibulin was 4th in the league in GAA last year and 6th in SP), but he has proven to be a flop right after signing a new deal. Not the guy I wanted to see in Edmonton, but it is a marked improvement. Maybe now that the Oilers have a goaltender, some other players will be more receptive to coming to Oil-town

I like Khabibulin. I think I would still rather have had Clemmensen for less money, I think he got 1.5M a year in Florida. It is still a great goalie who has a ring and really looked good last year. I believe he has played 50+ games in 5 of his last 6 seasons and Delouries will learn a lot from him as he gets brought into the NHL with 30 or so games. Now if we can just get this Heatly junk over with and get ourselves that forward we need, it should be an interesting year.

I must admit I was feeling worried in that few hours between Roli leaving and the Bulinwall arriving :)

I am happy with our goalie upgrade. I cannot stand this Heatley drama! Figure it out already will you!!! He'll come to Edmonton if there is no one else to take him? I understand the Rangers are done but there is still a three way deal floating out there with the Wild and San Jose. I really don't want to see Cogliano go but if we can land ourselves a scorer who can mesh with Hemsky, then I guess that's what it will take.

Well, now that Heatley has stated he doesn't want to be in Edmonton, I hope Tambellini takes the offer off the table

Aye, right now he should be focusing on bringing in a scorer who wants to be here. There are still a few names kicking around the free agent market and Tambellini really needs to be out there getting one of them. We have our goalie, I like our defence, we just need to get the offence going and we should have a decent year.

Wee bit better than last season but still back to back games with a side order of travel once in late Nov and again at years end. (that still seems crazy to me, period) Happened 3 times last season so I guess it's a tad better this time around.

Heatley Saga
Posted: 7/28/2009 12:41:46 PM
I just read that the Oilers are still actively (the word used was "Begging") persuing Heatley. Did this Oiler Management learn nothing from the Pronger departure?

I would have loved (big time) to see Heatley come to Edmonton ...... until he refused and then stated he wouldn't WANT to play here. Why would management want to POISON the dressing room with this negitivity?

Also, the price is way to high for this risk. Penner, yes, would love to see him gone.
Smid, I'll admit his play at times is atrocious, but at times he can look promising. He's still young and was starting to play a good physical game towards the end of last season.
I think the heaviest cost in this whole deal is Cogliano. This young man looks as though he will have a very promising career.

In my humble opinion, the Oilers should drop Cogliano out of the deal. Sure, take the risk on Heatley using Penner and Smid, cause if it worked out long term, it would be awesome for Edmonton to have this kind of gifted scorer. But if it didn't work out (as history has shown in the past with many different teams and scenarios), we'd still have Cogliano. Taking that chance would only have cost us Smid, and rid the team of an overpaid underachiever in Penner.

Personally, I hope Oilers drop the interest in Heatley (he'll only poison the dressing room) and continue shopping Penner.
Another good move might be to drop Horcoff's huge salary if we can trade him as well.

There's an idea, Penner and Horcoff for ..........???????

Dan Barnes had an excellent column last week about the Oilers’ pursuit of Heatley and how it is now bordering on "pathetic".

Thanks for that read rBg. Interesting read from a local perspective.
(I used to regularly read both Dan Barnes and Terry Jones when I lived up there.)

Barnes used the words; "beg him" & "pathetic saga" & "shameless shenanigans" in his article.

As I was reading his article, I couldn't help but think of the N.Y. Islanders.
A proud Hockey Franchise that wins Stanley Cups, has a bad decade, becomes privately owned, ......become laughing stock of the league......

I sure hope I'm wrong.
It seems to me, if the Oilers were that desperate to land Heatley, why didn't Katz himself (and maybe Horcoff too, he should be working all 12 mths. for what he's making) go directly to Kelowna to meet with the Brat (as in spoiled).

I can only hope the organization grabs a dose of reality real quick and moves on. We still need someone who can put a puck in the net. The only way this club is better now than it was at the end of the season is in goal, and that may only be marginal. The "Wall" has not proven to be overly reliable during his career.

The Oilers need to find a way of attracting "Star Players" who WANT to play in Edmonton.
Feeling "Positive" brings "Positive", and that in itself brings "Positive" into the dressing room, which in turn should bring "Positive" to the ice.

Heatley Saga

Well I can understand how badly they want Heatly. There are very few players as good as he is and very few of them ever come on the market. They can't get free agents to sign here and so trades are their only option. Most teams won't trade a player of this caliber and they really do need one so they jumped in this both feet. They are definately over fixated on Heatly though at this point and really should be looking at someone else. It is tough to sign someone though as they are so close to the cap so they really need to try and pursue another trade.

Of course it is tough to know who is out there that is really available and what it would cost. It is nice to say to trade for this person or that one, but we just don't know the reality of who is really available and who isn't.

The Oilers do have a tendancy to put all their eggs in one basket though. They did it last year with Hossa and lost out on him, and this year into the Heatley trade. This is the big thing they need to get over, to keep their options open. But is seems again they did not so they stay fixated on the only plan they seem to have.
