Your kind words, gentle personality, and die hard spirit will be sorely missed in this thread, Val. Have fun in Cowtown and make sure you carry lots of Gravol and barf bags to combat the inevitable nausea in that Sea of Red.

| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/27/2009 8:55:35 PM | Goodbye Rob Schremp. He was cut today, along with Eberle. Eberle returns to junior (good call, no need to rush him). As for Schremp, looks like he has played his fonal game with the Oilers organization (can't see him clearing waivers). Anyone surprised? Based on what he did this training camp, in light of his "fresh start", can't say I am. He did next to nothing with Quinn watching. Now if only Pouliot gets the same treatment!!!
I do really like what Ryan Stone has shown. Hopefully there's room for him somewhere.
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/28/2009 7:20:33 AM | Yeah, too big of a logjam at the end for my liking but under all the Oilers circumstances, I can't say too much.
Regarding Schremp, I kinda think that'll come back to haunt us a tad, like Glencross did.
Too bad Eberle couldn't be squeezed in but as mentioned, he's still just a pup. Lotsa time for him.
Jacques has sure been performing like he wants a job in Oil country this season.
Comrie too. (actually he's burning it up like I didn't really think he had in him)
Lotsa other positives thus far too but one detail I can't say leaves me with too good of a feeling is the upgrade from Roli to the Wall. I feel a lot of factors that made a difference in the games weren't really weighed right when concluding he was so vastly superior to Roloson as the numbers showed. IMO, Roli had really found his A-game again and won lots of games for the Oil almost single-handedly last season. Myself, I'd trade goalies back in a heartbeat. At very least for another year or two.
T'was a nice win last night though no matter what ones feelings about particulars. Next stop....... GOOD OLD BATTLE OF ALBERTA
GO OIL!!! | |

Roli had really found his A-game again and won lots of games for the Oil almost single-handedly last season.
Wow... I think that's stretching it a bit. I can think of far more games that the Oilers lost because of a bad goal those Roli won singlehandedly. The problem I had with Roli is that there seemed to be one bad goal every game with him in net. The Oilers had 17 one-goal losses last year (9 in regulation) with Dwayne Roloson in net. He kept them close, for sure, but the way I saw it, he lost a lot more of the close ones than he won. He won 10 one-goal games last season, six of which were in regulation. All four games Roli won in either OT or a shootout, the Oilers gave up the game-tying goal to force the extra period. I'm not saying all those goals were bad goals, but I know last year I never felt safe with a lead. Hopefully that changes this year. If Khabibulin plays anywhere near as well as he did last year, it's a huge improvement. He finished with the fourth-best GAA and sixth best SV% in the league. Of course. we all know what he did when he first signed that big contract with Chicago, and maybe last year will ultimately just prove that he only plays well when facing free agency in the summer, but here's hoping he has more integrity than that. I don't think the acquisition of Bulin is enough to get the Oilers into the playoffs this year, but hey... they are tied for fist overall right now!!!!
Like Ethan Moreau says... "Having Khabibulin here allows us to compete with Kiprusoff, Luongo, Backstrom - the elite goalies in our division and conference."
They didn't have that with Roli.

| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/28/2009 6:03:26 PM | I was at the game last night... (front row seats... ice level) not braggin'.. just saying (a birthday present from gf) and I was not at all impressed with Habby. I was thrilled when we got him but he has done nothing so far to show he is an improvement over Roli. He let in a few soft goals last night.
Comrie on the other hand... wow... A very welcome addition to the team.
Penner still needs a little motivation to become the great player he will be eventually.
Overall, I think the team is headed in the right direction.
We do however, need to work on our offense seriously.
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/28/2009 8:47:23 PM | ^^^ Well, technically, no one has done anything so far. Period. The season hasn't started. But if Khabibulin's shutout in his first appearance of the preseason did not impress you, then I'd suggest that maybe you're pretty hard to impress (just joshin ya)
I don't expect Comrie to keep up his 2-ppg average, or even half that good... but if he can post 25 goals and 60 points he would be the best money spent by any GM in the league this summer.
As for Penner, come on. He will never be great (at least not what I would consider "great"). I'd just like to see him play to a level where he is considered worthy of the money he gets paid. And really, in this day and age, he's not that far from it. I'd say 60 points is worthy of his $4.25M. I think he's capable of that. It's a matter of consistency with him.
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/29/2009 8:46:01 AM | | Schremp was picked up by the Islanders this morning. At least he's going to a place we only see once a year ... and no threat of ever seeing him in the playoffs. So bit, you don't have to worry about him coming back to haunt us... at least not in the immediate future. | |
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/29/2009 8:54:56 AM | Maybe Habi was having a bad day? we all have them, or have had them.....
that said, when it counts, he better not have anymore, these guys are paid far more than I am and when it comes to it I am paid to not have a 'bad day'.
all that said, I am still hopeful for a better season. now, I read last night that Legacy was released by the Thrashers, maybe we look at him as a back up? thoughts?
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/29/2009 10:03:43 AM | | I don't mind Deslauriers as a back-up. Legace was brutal in St. Louis last year (3.18 GAA, .885 SV%) And I would rather have a young goalie on his way up in his career as a back-up than an older goalie. | |
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/29/2009 11:07:10 AM | ok, was curious, as I don't follow close enough
on another note, Radio just announced that Rob Schremp has been picked up on waivers by the Islanders, so he is officially done with the OIL.
someone predicted that, can't remember who though (no NOT me - LOL)
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/29/2009 12:28:22 PM | | ha ha... wasn't a prediction... just beat you to the announcement. I posted it earlier today. | |
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 9/29/2009 12:39:29 PM | ah geez, never even read that...... LOL just remembered it from a talk about the cuts a couple of days ago.... | |
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 10/1/2009 6:16:38 AM | | Hope Reddox doesn't go the same way as Schremp did with the waivers thing. Both have showed spurts of notable potential but just haven't really shone too brightly yet IMO. | |
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 10/1/2009 9:52:20 AM | I would have rather seen Jacques put on waivers, but to be honest, the Oilers have far too many guys on their roster who could possibly clear waivers without any interest from any other teams. OK it all starts for real tonight! I ended up with two Oilers in my fantasy league ... I got Tom Gilbert in the 10th round (we had to draft 4 defencemen) and I picked up Mike Comrie with my last pick, 17th round. Hey, if he gets 60 points he's the steal of the draft. If he sucks I'll just treat him like the Oilers did Schremp and Reddox and waiver his ass | |
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 10/4/2009 4:50:37 AM | BULIN! BULIN! BULIN! *belch... (fart)*
Yup, obvioux upgrade from Roli alright, and a spry, whopping three years younger than Roloson too. (I think Joey, the towel boy, coulda performed better last night) MORE of Lowe's savvy. Regarding some comments here related, ..........ummm......... no comment!
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 10/4/2009 10:36:24 AM | Yep... never, EVER saw Roli cost us a game. Like I have said many times, it's going to be a long season for us Oiler fans. They are simply not a very good team. But certainly if you are cursing Bulin after that game, I hope you were doing the same for the entire first line. Our $7M man had one shot. Our "superstar", Alice, was invisible for 90% of his shifts. I iwll say one thing about Quinn... ar least he knows where to put Robert Nilsson | |

| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 10/7/2009 6:05:41 AM | Worked through the game so I missed it Liked the result though. Looking forward to the Habs game on the weekend... my first "live" game of the season. | |
|
| Oilers - Looking good so far Posted: 10/7/2009 11:53:47 AM | | They looked pretty good for most of last night, just a little off for minute or two after one penalty. I like the play so far this year and it is pretty easy to see Quinn's positive influence thus far. They seem to be playing harder, tougher and spending a lot more time on offence then they have in recent memory. Gagner especially seems to be taking well to that style of play. Now we will just have to see if the boys can keep it up for a full season, if they can, good things should happen. | |
