| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/23/2008 3:34:30 PM | Sorry guys, I am the only one that likes the Inter-league play, they did it all for me, it’s my fault. So………
A few sweeps were mentioned and the Angels swept the Phils as well.
More placed or heading to the DL ..........Dumatrait, Zambrano, Timlin, Badenhop, Cesar Izturis.
And those Yankees just won’t go away.
** Personal note I saw Fred McGriff today, asked how he likes working with the Rays again, said he would eventually like to be more “hands on”, sounded like he might want to manage someday.
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/23/2008 8:15:00 PM | | I like interleague to, seeing as our pitchers (Mariners) hits better then some of our normal batters. | |
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/23/2008 10:28:19 PM | | Please don't remind me about Angels sweep of Phillies. That series shows pitching beats good hitting. At the begining I thought inter-league play was a goor idea, but it creates unbalance schedule. Now the Phills go to Oakland+ Texas.Who do the Marlins +Mets play? | |
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/24/2008 8:22:08 AM | Sounds as if you are insinuating the Marlins and Mets were given a cake walk inter-league schedule compared to the Phillies.
The Mets played the Rangers (same as the Phils), Angels (lst in their division) and the Mariners.
Are you thinking that somehow the schedule guy could see into the future and knew the M’s would be abysmal and said “Oh, let’s give them to the Mets just to piss off the Phillies?"
The Marlins played the A’s (same as the Phillies), Rays (I think we have played them every year) and Mariners.
Are you thinking that the schedule guy last year thought the Rays always suck (didn’t see that one coming) and saw into the future that the M’s would be abysmal and said “Oh let’s give both teams to the Marlins just to piss off the Phillies?"
Maybe you are insinuating that the schedule guy is a Braves fan??
Your team is in first place (granted only by one game ) what are moaning about?? Be thankful you don’t have to contend on a regular basis with the Red Sox and Yanks.
BTW, for those that don’t know we have the Sunshine Series here every year (Rays/Marlins) it just isn’t as well known or even cared about as much as the Subway Series, Cross-town Series and Freeway Series.
There is no planned out conspiracy by the schedule guy to give advantage or disadvantage to certain teams with certain match-ups.
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/24/2008 10:35:44 PM | Sorry you misunderstood me. When I ask who yhe ,et Marlins play, I dis not know. Don't have a league schedule, I just ask to find out. Know the Mets play the Yanks ho,e+away. Found out today Rays and Marlins, Mets and Mariabers.Sorry if I upset you, I don't like to upset people. | |
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/25/2008 7:26:38 AM | Not upset. No worries. Have just heard that kind of thing before and it gets tiring. How come my team gets a tough schedule and the others play the crappy teams? I hear the same tired excuses about the tough VS non-tough divisions. Anyway you look at it baseball is a tough game to play even when you are the best from top to bottom .......perfect example ....the Yankees. For every player that gets his moment in the sun there are 50 that never made it as far as try out. For every team that has the big bucks and star players you have one with very little payroll and no names blasting through the season. I thought you were moaning about your Phillies schedule VS the Mets and Fish,. Glad to know you are not one of those poor, poor, pity me fans.
Sooooo, think of my rant as directed to those that do blame everyone for their own team's woes.
The Maple bat issue is heating up, anyone have any feelings about it? From everything I have read even some players and coaches feel they are a danger due the way they splinter off compared to the ash. There seems to be a discrepancy on the usage of maple bats the Louisville company says it is about half of the league and the Marucci Bat Company says it’s 75%. Some sources are claiming the ones that are splintering off to a point of danger weren’t made right and might even be “altered” by the player through shaving the handle. Seems to be a hot debate among officials at the moment.
If the Nats didn’t have enough problems they have lost Johnson for the season, he had surgery on his wrist yesterday. Josh Hamilton has a knee problem and is day to day, he still leads the league in RBIs, be a shame if he had to go on the DL.
In the He Said/He Said department. Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi went on a rant about the Red’s Adam Dunn on his radio program. Now he claims the outfielder called him and the GM apologized. Dunn says they never spoke on the phone.
JD Drew has had a big month and has filled in nicely for the Sawx with the absence of Big Papi. Good for him. They had a nice come back last night, thought we had a chance to catch them. At least the Yanks lost.
Have no idea how the Rays pulled off the win last night against the Fish, though Percy was going to blow it. He seems to be faltering on that leg again.

| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/25/2008 6:46:37 PM | | Anyone know how long Josh Hamilton is out for? Heard he got injured during last night's game against Houston. | |
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/25/2008 8:06:18 PM | | So Shawn Chacon just got indefinitely suspended. Did he get physical with Ed Wade? That's kind of what it looks like. | |
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/25/2008 8:19:54 PM | | I believe hamilton isn't suppose to be out for long, well hopefully not. He's having a great season. Being a reds fan i think the Volquez For Hamilton move may have been one of the most fair trades in quite some time seeing as Volquez could be mentioned in possible cy young talks and hamilton for AL MVP. | |

Anyone know how long Josh Hamilton is out for? Heard he got injured during last night's game against Houston.
Hamilton and Bradley were both out of the Texas line-up tonight and are day to day. The knee that is giving Josh trouble is the same one he had surgery on a couple years ago. I don’t think he actually injured it in the game, he has been having trouble with it for a week or so, it got inflamed and he couldn’t seem to run well in the game. He doesn’t seem to think it will be a big issue. Guess we’ll see.
So Shawn Chacon just got indefinitely suspended. Did he get physical with Ed Wade?
According to Chacon he and Wade got into a confrontation when Chacon refused to go to the manager’s office when requested by Cooper and Wade. When Wade later found Chacon asked him again to join them, Chacon refused and Wade began to yell and cuss and Chacon asked him to stop. Wade didn’t stop and Chacon grabbed Wade and threw him on the ground. Supposedly, things had been brewing with Shawn since he was demoted to the bull pen then asked for a trade. They probably wanted to talk to him about airing his “grievances” in public and he didn’t want to hear it. So far, Wade isn’t commenting.
Being a reds fan i think the Volquez For Hamilton move may have been one of the most fair trades in quite some time
The entire process surrounding Hamilton has worked out for the best, especially for Josh. There has been (of course) some criticism towards the Rays and I believe our GM has even kicked himself for leaving him unprotected but in reality this was the best thing for Hamilton. I really don’t think the Rays thought someone would scoop him up when he had just had surgery, but the Red’s did and now Texas is benefiting. I think the Rays got the 50, 000 draft fee. I can remember a lot of Ranger’s fans fuming when they traded Volquez.
Has anyone had a chance to see any of video clips of the Manuel/Beltran ejections? Runge’s display seemed a bit out of the ordinary to me. I understand Beltran was griping which is an absolute no-no, you can’t argue balls and strikes, but I have never seen an umpire respond that way appearing to go as far as to antagonize the player. Supposedly, he apologized to Manuel and it’s under review. It just looks really strange.

| This Week In Baseball Posted: 6/26/2008 10:12:03 AM | Too bad. I had been pleasantly surprised with the guy this year, too.
Oh well, we're out of contention anyway. We'll be selling by next week. I'm just concerned as to who we're going to move. There are talks of trying to unload Roy O. and Carlos Lee. I think that would be about the most retarded thing they could do.
I'd part with Valverde. He's on the last year of his contract. We could get something decent for him.

True, but Boston has to do something regarding Jason Varitek. His average is down to the .220's & if he doesn't improve this during the 2nd half, then he'll be an offensive liability for them come playoff time.
Any timetable on when David Ortiz is returning to the team?
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 7/5/2008 7:57:33 AM | | God the NL West is weak....how is Arizona in 1st place with a losing record? | |
|
| This Week In Baseball Posted: 7/5/2008 8:33:39 AM | Great series for the Rays, we lost Bartlett and Percy though.
So, many more heading for the DL , Reds lost Hopper for the season.
As for Varitek he brings a lot more to the team than his numbers, if anyone should go to the bench it’s Lugo.
About the only word on Ortiz is that he is “progressing” , he is not expected to be at the All- Star game. I hope you guys voted.
AZ is in first place simply because they have won slightly more games within the division, which between themselves seem somewhat matched, level in line with parity. Remember how everyone wanted that level playing field? This is what it looks like, doesn’t look so good when you actually have it now does it? The D-backs have dominated at home which is what you want, but the division is pretty even but they have had trouble outside of it. Again folks before you scream about those evil teams with money , there should be a cap and how the revenue money isn’t split fairly or isn’t enough to bring that level playing field to your division take a look at the NL West. Can’t have it both ways, you can’t have a split division with everyone even and say it is a weak division yet scream there is no parity when one or two teams beat up the rest of the division. You either want it evenly matched which means most of the teams will be at or around .500 or you want a clear dominant leader of the division. Make up your minds. ( I mean that as a collective you not anyone in particular on the forum.)
On that note, I am finally heading to the Trop tonight, game and concert….woo hoo!!

| This Week In Baseball Posted: 7/5/2008 9:04:14 AM | I am taking pleasure in the way the Red Sox are handling the Yankees in this series so far.

Varitek may not be getting the numbers at bat, but he is one of that team's greatest assets defensively. He is a book of knowledge when it comes to being prepared for the opponents. The Yankees management was asked not too long ago (last month, I think) which Red Sox player they would get rid of if they could and their answer was Varitek.
