| Is reading a lost skill? Posted: 2/17/2008 6:55:00 PM | | Because of the internet and email, I think the "handwriting" is the lost skill. I can finish statement in a few seconds where it will take me a minute to write using pen and paper. | |

| Is reading a lost skill? Posted: 2/17/2008 7:19:26 PM | | It is true that fewer people seem to write in cursive. Most people seem to print and some only use upper case. I can see handwriting disappearing. Typing is faster than writing and with computers you can correct all your mistakes without that nasty white-out stuff. | |

| Is reading a lost skill? Posted: 2/18/2008 2:15:33 PM | I've lost my reading skill. Can someone please help me read the original post on this thread 'cause I'd like to respond to it but I can't read it. | |

| Is reading a lost skill? Posted: 2/18/2008 4:32:09 PM | I try, but for some people it's not as easy as it would seam.
I got straight A's through High school except English class - I always just scraped by with a passing grade (i think my English teacher took pity on me) - not for lack of trying ... I just cannot remember how to spell certain words or words that are infrequently used - I'm slightly Dyslexic - but that is no excuse - I think that my brain is just not wired that way.
I put effort into my thoughts on writing - whether its email or a forum posting.
I score high on IQ tests - but I still cannot spell very well ... go figure.
Not everyone is as skilled at language as you are, then again - everyone has their talents and faults. | |

| Is reading a lost skill? Posted: 2/18/2008 5:16:30 PM | Sorry to return this thread to the original topic...which has nothing to do with reading at all...in spite of the title. If I can read properly this thread is about social interaction. Seems like most have forgotten all proper etiquette once they are at their computer keyboard. I am also included yours truly into this trend for, at times, I too forget to hold my sharp tongue...or will not reply at the proper time or place.
But I do have a good reason for my omission, computer speak in not my mother's tongue.

| Is reading a lost skill? Posted: 2/21/2008 10:44:50 AM | ^^^^ the computer guy
I can understand your frustrations. I send newsletters by email. I take great pains to remove any possible ambiguity from my newsletters.
Yet invariably I get responses such as:
"I want to mail ..... to you, what is your mailing address?" (every newsletter has my name, complete mailing address, phone number, etc. in the signature block)
"How do I ....?" (the answer was right there, a complete and perfect answer to her question was only one line further down from where she typed her name in the reply)
"Can you forward my condolences to the family." (my newsletter provided full contact details for the grieving family and stated that is where condolence be sent to)
Some people don't read and some read but don't comprehend.
This does bring some truth to the adage "It is hard to soar like an eagle when you fly with turkeys!"

| Is reading a lost skill? Posted: 2/22/2008 6:09:59 PM | Dear Computer Guy, it is very clear to me. Must be frustrating getting all those emails when you were just putting yourself out there to organize events for us to meet people which is why we're on this web site to begin with. thanks for your efforts. If I lived in Nanaimo I'd be there. Cheers | |
