| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 2/23/2008 5:34:18 AM | | brilliant hoover dog. i went to scotland last summer. while i was there i had seen red deer, osprey, grey seals, tree creeper, siskins and blue tits. i stayed in a cabin one week and had a sparrowhawk land on our cabin fencing just outside our doorway. we also seen bats there at night. i also went to a farm that fed the red kites, though they were there, they did not feed, but buzzards did and a sparrowhark and a kestrel were around hunting. so i enjoyed scotland, but wish i seen an eagle while i was there. | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 2/23/2008 9:01:04 PM | Aloha from Hawaii....since our islands are "new" compared to most other sites, our flora and fauna is small. We have many native plants as well as those types that were introduced. Some of the common native plants are the O'hi'a tree, the O'hel'o. Other plants such as pineapple, mango, banana, lili'koi, were brought here by missionaries and others. Birds: well, there is a small variety and we lack the colorful feathers. Honeycreeper is one variety that has changed over the years. You can google it to find out more. We do have cardinals all over the place. The Hawaiian owl , Pue'o, is out and about at night time....beautiful. The deer population is large on certain islands. I think they're called Axis Deer(?). Many of them on Maui and Molokai'i. The Big Island of HI has lots of sheep (mouflan), goats, wild boar, (lots and lots of wild boar), and wild donkey that roam in the lava fields on the Kona side of the island. Lots of fish. Our state fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapu'a'a. Tiny little fish but very big name. We have your typical reef fish (angel, tang, parrot,) and deeper bottom fish varieties that stay deeper than others. Big fish include the U'lua, marlin, ono, mahimahi. Hawaii is unique in it's flora/fauna. You might want to take a look at some of it on the net. A very, very beautiful place! Our environment is guarded and no one is allowed to bring in any foreign animals. Very strict laws and heavy fines/jail if discovered. We don't have snakes of any kind. They even check the planes on arrival from certain places to make sure no snakes have crawled into the landing gear boxes. Our park, Volcano National is also kept pristine. Before hiking trails you're supposed to sit and brush the bottom of your shoes/sneakers to keep any outside seeds, etc. out of the area. I've spent a summer just a few years ago in England (at Oxford) and soooooo appreciated the different animals (rabbits for one....I hadn't seen a rabbit in over 25 years!) | |

See, that's got Abbot and Costello written all over it.
Guy tries to make small talk:
"Hi! This is a really cool tree, what's it called?"
"Oh. Hiya!"
"Yah, hi yourself! The tree, though, what do you call it?"
"Oh, Hiya!"
"Yeah... right, we covered that already, hello, I'm wondering what the tree is called..."
"No, not Hello, oh hello is over there. This is Oh, Hiya!"
"Riiiiight..."

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 2/24/2008 8:44:55 AM | Around here, our wildlife hangs out at a place called Ralph's. They are strange nocturnal creatures who only come out at night and seem to be more abundant on the weekends! The worst ones travel in packs and will howl out their mating call, "Hey Baby, can I buy you a drink?"
OP, we have blue tits here too. This is a retirement city!! And, we have great tits...they are usually found at Ralph's!
Okay, being serious now! There is an abundance of wildlife here in Medicine Hat, but the best thing to do is take a drive out in the country after the sun comes up and you can find all kinds of critters: coyotes, owls, hawks, eagles, red-tailed fox (such cute, shy little animals), white-tailed deer, antelope, pheasants, and we do have rattlesnakes, which are on the protected species list.
Drive to the Cypress Hills and there are moose, elk, cougars, wild turkeys, and too many species of birds to even name here!

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 3/1/2008 2:45:21 PM | South Zoo Jersey here,5 miles outside of Phila.,Pa.
I have deer in my back yard. Last count the other day,is up to 15. I took pics throughout last summer, just to see how much they've grown......the 3 bucks all have a pretty good size rack. I enjoy watching them, the little ones play like puppies.
I don't live near any woods,so to speak. There used to be 3 farms(1 had 2 big apple orchards on both sides of the road) in the area when I moved here in '86. Now,the orchards have been replaced by a housing community & a huge industrial park...bummer. The undeveloped land that belonged to the township directly behind me is now a parking lot. grrrrr
I've seen deer, rabbits, red fox, blue jays, cardinals, sparrows (And before you ask~I mean the flying kind-birds )),owl, woodpecker, hawks(there is a nest outback),opposum, turtles, geese(I think they are everywhere 'eh), 2 snakes, too many squirrels(both types),frogs,a big toad(but I kicked him to the curb ),lady bugs, grass hoppers, lightning bugs, snails, racoons, skunk, and we actually spotted an eagle! Oh...how could I forget GROUND HOGS!?..probably cuz they're still hibernating. DUH. I USED to think they were CUTE waddling across my yard....what a nuisance! ACKKKK! They're slowing destroying my yard, they tunnel EVERYWHERE.
Fishin' in the area.......small mouth bass, sunnies, blue gills, eels, trout, shad. Nothing in the area is edible.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 3/2/2008 10:38:43 AM | Living in Florida gives way to an interesting assortment of wildlife. From your average black bear, whitetail deer, eagles, bobcats, wild turkeys, and raccoons to your more exotic species like crested caracaras, manatees, burrowing owls, key deer, alligators, and Florida panthers.
In my own back yard and oak trees there have been raccoons, armadillo, blue indigo snakes, grey squirrels, red-shoulder hawks, barred owl family, cardinals, blue jays, robins, and a rabbit family.
As a former reserve wildlife officer, I was fortunate to see many critters from the lists above. We have a wonderful assortment of wildlife here in the South, and it has been an honor to have been up close and personal with so many. Blessings, Sal

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 3/8/2008 11:29:39 AM | Um in NZ we have Hoodies, They are mostly nocternal and roam the burbs kicking coke cans & spitting on the sidewalk.
Out on the coast we have about 40 miles of surf beach which you can drive, there's the odd seal, penguin, sea lion and sometimes a beached whale (although it's not really wild life cause it's dead) Also the usual bird life, I don't know birds that well, they're all seagulls to me.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 3/12/2008 12:38:11 PM | I live on the south western corner of Australia, and we do have a lot of wildlife still residing here (in spite of this country having a very bad record for species deceasies).
The humans seem to be the real 'wildlife' these days.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 3/19/2008 1:15:39 PM | This post was started a while back, but I found it interesting. so I will keep it alive.
I live in the U.S. Northern Wisconsin not to far south of lake Superior.
White tail deer, wolves, fisher, otter, beaver, and once in a while a bobcat. The rivers must be thawing and have some open water, I've been seeing bald eagles for the last few weeks. The lakes still have about 3 feet of ice on them. Soon the black bear should be coming out of hibernation. I had a red fox run through the yard about 2 weeks ago. Ruffed grouse are common, but I saw 6 bobwhite quail last week and a pheasant 2 weeks ago. Someone must have released them.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 4/18/2008 6:49:27 PM | Things that have strolled or flown through my back yard within 250 feet of my home are:
Coyote, red fox, too many white tailed deer to count (we call them rats with antlers), black bear, wild turkeys, grouse, turkey vultures, rabbits, chipmunks, bazillions of birdies, southern flying squirrels (go figure...I live kinda up north), hawks by the truckloads, and I even had a copperhead in my rock wall a few years ago. I gotta keep blammin the wood rats with my .22 cause they will eventually chew through my house and wander around inside at 3 am...better to blow 'em away outside whilst swilling beer than wake up the neighbors while perforating your home during early morning hours.

Think that's it. I tell myself that I am really lucky having all this wildlife all around me!

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 4/19/2008 12:48:37 PM | | I live off the AP trail in the Hudson River Valley in New York State. Have an abundance of wildlife here including a "herd" of approximately 25 to 30 wild turkeys which like to hang out in my backyard. One even flew up to perch on the back deck. | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 4/20/2008 6:59:29 PM | The wildlife where I live is not too unique, except for maybe the Armodillo.
When I was camping in West Texas Mountains, I woke up one night to find a ringtail rummaging through our campsite. That is an interesting looking creature.
When I lived in California is was much neater. About 90 miles south of San Francisco is a place called Ano Nuevo, which is a wildlife refuge for elephant seals. It is where they come to shore and breed. The giant males battle each other for territory and accumulate harems. The whole spectacle was so alien to most things I have seen in life.
