| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 6/25/2008 5:43:22 PM | Wildlife?!?!?! Pfft...I live in Florida and you'll see an 8' gator taking a trip through your kitchen or just moseying on down the road in your neighborhood just as well as seeing a snake slithering in your office building from 9 to 5. I've just recently read about the gator frolicking around in some poor woman's kitchen in Florida, but experienced seeing the snake first hand when I went to work the other day. ah, well. He's a fixture, I suppose. I saw him approximately 8 months ago in my office building but the dude was A LOT SMALLER then!! lol
I love the wildlife here. We have everything from roseatte spoonbills to blue herons, not to mention the wild boar (which look like my mom..sorry mom, but it's true), pelicans, loggerhead turtles, an abundant array of marine life, Snowy Egrets and more species of lizards than the Galapagos Islands, not to mention the miniature deer that thrive on certain barrier islands in Florida.
God I love living here, but when I walk out my door each day I look left and right for potential problems with the wildlife. I'm just glad we can all co-exist down here together..yeah, but will I still feel the same way when a 10' foot gator wants to build her nest under my SUV one day? LOL
Of course I will. I chose to live here, and I'll respect the wildlife no matter where I live.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 6/30/2008 9:32:22 PM | | Last night there was a racoon feasting on the contents of my bird feeder. A few days before that a possum was digging for grubs in the front yard. While I was walking my dog a Armadillo came sauntering by. It was nice to see actually the only ones I have lately are dead along side the road. Our retention pond is home a ever growing population of ducks. A pair of sandhill cranes stroll the neighborhood . Our pond is also home for some Ibis and Egret's. Of course we are over run with brown and green anoles and lots of snakes. Alligators fortunately have not come to visit our neighborhood. | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 7/26/2008 4:41:29 PM | Here in NZ, in the town where I live we don't see too many interesting wildlife. In my experience, I've seen the occasional wild rabbit running through a reserve, pukekos or takahes wandering around reserves (if you search them up you'll see that they're so similar its hard to distinct between the two) and hedgehogs. In the bushes elsewhere in NZ we get mostly native animals like the kea found in South Island, the weta which is a native insect. To be honest there aren't too many interesting wildlife in NZ. Also, NZ also has banned snakes into NZ- snakeskin, eggs, preserved baby snakes, etc. They're not even allowed in zoos. The reason for this is to protect all the endangered animals that are already living here, like the defenceless kiwi and endangered bird's eggs.I'm glad we have the ban. Just means one less thing (or animal) to worry about. | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/3/2008 10:28:42 PM | | I live in the NW corner of CT in a small village near a river and lots of state forest. Besides the usual song birds we have the small rodents (squirrels, mice, chipmunks, shrews, moles, etc. ), turkeys, fox, deer, lynx, skunks, opossom, raccoon, hawks, bald eagles, beaver, fishers, great blue heron, canada geese, various types of ducks, and even occasionally bears and a mountain lion. | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/4/2008 12:40:03 AM | Cougars! They've been living up on a hill next to town for the last several years, feeding on deer, mostly, but have been getting bolder and bolder, doing little "walk abouts" late at night...letting us know they are here. As the saying goes....if you see a cougar, it's because they let you.
If it were bears, wolves or coyotes (who are here, but not quite as bold) I wouldn't be that worried...but cougars?....
I have a neighbour who has a few rabbits...one of them recently discovered my garden...suffice to say...if a cougar shows up when the rabbit is here, and I'm not....it's all good...
I'd rather have neither, but if that is what nature is to be...then so be it....
(Just as long as I don't get eaten in the process)

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/4/2008 7:07:36 AM | | nzchick120 u have some of the best wildlife in the world. some of them have bin around since the dinosaurs. and new zealand is proberly best for its birds because b4 us europeans bringing hedgehogs and other mammals, the only native animals were bats that crawl around the ground, the rest were birds, some species have been there so long unthreternd that they lost the abillaty to fly. new zealand is unique and the wildlife so much bizzare than the rest of the world that sometimes i wish i could go there just 2 see it all. not interesting pull the other one | |

Picture if you will the cooing of hundreds of diseased pigeons fighting over a stale bagel, rats the size of a small dog skipping gracefully across the subway tracks on your morning commute and of course who could forget sharing a meal with NYC's beloved****oaches frequenting all your favorite 2am empanada joints.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/21/2008 5:17:50 PM | I live in a city within a couple of blocks of a nice park and a world class botanical garden. Two weeks ago I saw a red fox in the garden.
In my yard and close environs I've seen 'possums, squirrels, rabbits, snakes. Lots of birds: starlings, mourning doves, sparrows, cardinals, mockingbirds. Recently I'm getting a bunch of goldfinches devouring the echinacea seeds. We get hawks - redtails and sharp shinned. Have seen Great Horned Owls in the park and have heard them hooting in my back yard. Night hawks, blue jays, occasional downy woodpeckers and flickers. Pigeons. Lightning bugs, butterflies (esp. small white ones and yellow swallowtails recently), dragonflies. Hummingbirds. Praying mantis.
I plant flowers, keep brush piles, and put out water for the birds and the critters. Slowly I'm trying to transform my little yard into a place more inviting to birds, animals, and people.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/25/2008 9:43:47 PM | Well, lessee....
Here in the wilds of WV I see more critters than people on any given day. The deer and rabbits you just about have to shoo out of your way. Plenty of squirrel and raccoon, possum and skunk, groundhogs, mice, the occasional coyote but they're pretty shy. The first two years I was here there were a couple of mountain lion sightings, but none since then. Officially they're not here, but most country folk have run across them at least once or twice or know people who have.
In the snake category I see mostly blacksnakes and water snakes, plus those tiny ringnecked blacksnakes not much bigger than a night crawler. There are copperhead and timber rattlers about, but no sightings yet on my acreage.
As for birds, a wide range of owls and hawks and songbirds, plus the ever present turkey buzzards cleaning up after other critters' misfortunes. My pond and creek are on the circuit for a pair of great blue herons who stop by every week or so, and every fall I get a visit from a single ring-necked duck. Every spring a pair of mallards take up residence in the pond, but I never see any ducklings. I think the snapping turtles enjoy the delicacies. Box turtles roam the woods. I've got a good population of pileated woodpeckers and wild turkeys. I don't set out feeders for them, but the hummingbirds stop by to check out any new blooms.
Also in the pond are catfish, large and smallmouth bass, rock bass, crappie and bluegill, peepers and other frogs, giant crawfish and freshwater mussels. Every now and then I go catch dinner.
There aren't a lot of biting bugs here. I probably see less than a dozen mosquitos per year. Right about now is when a few horseflies show up, but this has been a slow year for them. The lightning bug display is spectacular on the hillside behind the house, and the spiders weave beautiful pieces of art in the trees. I get a wonderful array of butterflies and moths. Come late fall the japanese beetles will swarm and wriggle into any warm crack they can find for the winter.
I love that on a warm evening like this I can open all the doors and windows, and by leaving the porch lights on can eliminate most bug incursions into the house while still enjoying the evening breeze and night noises.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/30/2008 11:36:26 AM | Norwich? - Isn't that where all the Broads are? Always wanted to spend time on a boat around there. Somehow missed a turn and ended up in the Gulf of California. Pelicans - thousands of pelicans! Watching Ospreys catch fish and hearing their plaintiff call. Nesting on power poles all over the place. Cormorants, grebes, ducks, herons, egrets, ibis, frigate birds, seagulls, terns, vulures, eagles and tons of colorful tiny birds I can't even name. And I haven't even been into the forests yet. Terrestrial life isn't too common. Mostly hot and desert. An odd bobcat, wild dogs, lots and lots of reptiles. Kinda wierd seeing large lizards etc. scooting around. Ah, but the sealife. Whales of every variety, sometimes leaping fully out of the water. Dolphins, seals, sea lions. Fish by the thousands - in water so clear you seem to be able to see forever. Whale sharks that will swim within inches of you - and other sharks I haven't wanted to get quite so close to. Parrotfish, angelfish, jacks, tuna, bonito, dorado, surgeonfish, goatfish, pompano, snappers, rays. Brilliantly colored starfish in many shapes and sizes. Shrimp, lobster, crabs and clouds of tiny creatures from plankton to fry that the bigger fish feed on. And I'm told it's a mere shadow of what it used to be! Do plants count? Cactus - burnt to a crisp in the tropical sun, yet leaping to life when the summer rains come along. The same with all the leafless bushes, sometimes sporting but a single flower on empty branches as evidence they are still alive. Haha - nobody mentioned insects! Ugh! Bees frantic for water, even sucking it out of wet clothes hung out to dry. The fastest flies I've ever seen. No way to swat them by hand. Even a fly-swatter is a 50-50 chance. Smaller flies called Bobos which swarm after rains, getting in your ears, up your nose and everywhere they can go. Forcing you indoors to escape them. Mosquitos - millions of hungry mosquitos after the rains too. So dense they can turn your clothes black. Fortunately only where water collects, so there are escapes. And then the n0-see-ums, like English gnats but so small and invisible that the first indication they are around is the itchy bites and swelling they inflict. | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/31/2008 5:44:23 AM | | There are so many creeply crawley things in Florida to mention but I drive across a 2 mile bridge to work each day and about a dozen Osprey sit on top of the light poles having their breakfast of fish........it is just amazing to watch them! | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/31/2008 5:51:35 AM | In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we have:
Black bear, moose, caribou (protected), elk (protected), sandhill crane, piping plover, bald eagles (et al), hawks (red tailed et al), piliated (sp?) woodpecker, barn owls, screech owls, whitetail deer, lynx, bobcats, wolves, coyotes, fox, porcupine, wolverine - just to name a few.
Due to the geography here, there is an annual spring migration count for hawks on their way to Canada. Hawks do not prefer to fly across open water, and will follow the peninsula until the cross is less than two miles (i.e. right where I live). I have banded hawks and owls here and assisted with the counting. For more information on that program, google Whitefish point bird observatory.
Plant life is too diverse to list; woodland plants galore. Trees all by themselves would take up the bulk of this forum page!

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/31/2008 11:39:32 AM | | quietjohn2 im afraid norwich is the city part in norfolk but surrounding it is indeed the broads. the broads are actualy man made houndreds of years ago but so many things live there that they became natural. they arnt that big like say the great lakes or even like the scottish lochs but they are so unique. they are home to the norfolk hawker dragonfly which can only be found in the broads and nowhere else in the world. we also have the european swallowtail butterfly which can only be found here in the broads than anywhere else in the uk. chinese water deer are found here to as they seem to breed better here in china where they are rare. they have tusks not antlers which is so cool. the broads also has a population of european cranes found nowhere else in the uk. marsh harriers and bitterns were only found here but thankfully they are spreding across the uk gradually. so quietjohn2 does this tempt you because the broads are amaizing even though the tourism from boats do make it noisy a bit.and also there is lots more to see here then the stuff i mentioned | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 9/8/2008 9:30:01 PM | I live in London, Ontario.........right in town, but across the road from a marsh.
I get all kinds of critters in my backyard........I just don't know how they make it across the 6 lanes of traffic????
Skunks and coons are the most common. This year I had a possom living under my back stoop. All kinds of birds...........blue jays and robbins being the most common.
Probably the most bizzare animal though, was a wild turkey. It was sitting on my back railing one morning when I went outside. I don't know who was more scared - me or the poor bird. All I remember was a lot of noise and huge SWOOSH of feathers...........scared the living daylights right out me!!~
