| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 8/9/2009 10:55:13 PM | I came across a Mountain Lion (Cougar) the other day while I was on a run... Yes... you run faster ;)
You also see deer, squirrels, groundhogs. What you don't want to see are bears, and I've been lucky enough to avoid such...
That's in Banff National Park, Canada. I moved here this summer, in hopes to avoid the "Patio drinks" scene back in my adoptive hometown of Toronto, Canada. I think the only animals you see there are ratty looking squirrels, Pigeons, and show-ponies (you know, those women and men who prance around in herds and don't mingle with many outside of their own kind).

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 9/5/2009 4:43:07 PM | Well, I live in rural Michigan, United States. I am in the middle part of the lower peninsula on the west side. I explain all of this as the wildlife will vary quite a bit depending on where in the state you are. I will first say that we do have quite a few elk in our state, but not on my side.
Where I live we have LOTS of deer even right in town walking down the downtown streets in the evening and night. Of course we have the usual racoons, opossum, black squirrel, grey squirrel, rabbits, hare, snapping turtles, Canadian Geese, Mallards, Loons (I so love to hear loons), lots of different finches, red-winged blackbirds, crows, owls, buzzards, bald eagles, eagles, the most gorgeous and hugest turkeys you will ever see with blue heads which of course change colors, song sparrows, striated woodpeckers, red birds, cardinals, blue jays, blue birds, pheasant, black bear, cougars, bobcats, red fox, beaver, moles, grey herron, humming birds, chipmunk, skunk, grey wolf, coyote...pike, walleye, salmon, brook trout, lake trout, brown trout, steelhead trout, perch, herring, stugeon, bluegill, smelt, bass, musky...
We have so much diversity of wildlife here it is really very hard to name them all. The wildlife is one of the reasons I live here. Good Thread.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 9/14/2009 11:09:06 AM | I seriously love the Pacific Northwest, and the wildlife I have been privileged to view here..
My Favorite experiences have included watching an Otter family tumble pell-mell out of their day den and lounge and tussle and groom as they prepared to embark on the evening's fishing venture... from our overlook only about 12 feet uphill, we were completely unobserved until my companion sneezed and all five vanished into the River with hardly a splash.
Another favorite, and very recent incident. involved two male Elk sparring near a coastal state park... so near in fact that they blocked the path returning from the beach to the park lot...caught it on film, but pictures cannot convey the experience.... breathtakingly intense in person..
And my original Oregon favorite... Osprey fishing in the cool fall morn, as the sun chases mist-dogs from the canyons...
these are the creatures who populate my little corner of heaven on earth ...interspersed frequently with eagle, hawks, sparrow, hummers, Dragonflies (in an amazingly collection and variety of jeweltones)... deer, raccoons, foxes, coyote, lizards and frogs of various sorts, squirrel, chipmunk, quail families, wild turkey, peacocks, vultures and though I never am privileged yet to view.. cougar and bear... and let us not forget sweet little mr. pepe-le-pe-ew... who I have, thankfully been able to quietly back away from on all three of our unexpected nocturnal encounters...
hey OP... nice topic... thanks!

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 9/17/2009 3:34:11 PM | | I see alot of roadkill where I live in the country but just a few miles from where two main interstates cross. Lots of racoons, opposums, even 1-2 foxes on the road. tons of deer and woodchucks. my favorite are the fox. They are the red ones and to see them run across a field is breathtaking. They move so smoothly, gracefully and faster than anything animal -wise that I have ever witnessed. | |

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 9/26/2009 4:30:10 PM | I live in one of the most densely populated counties in Florida. We're surrounded by water on 3 sides and because of the population desnsity it really is amazing to see the amount of wildlife here.
I have a 3 ft black racer snake that lives in my yard, bunnies, armadillo, possums, squirrels, citrus rats, coyotes in the area, and raccoons. Oh and lets not forget the alligators, manatees and otters as well as the dolphins, sharks and god knows how many species of fish. Jeez, I even have resident black widow spiders all around the outside of my house, as well as brown recluse spiders.
Its the bird life in this metropolitan area that blows me away: bald eagle, osprey, hawks, owls, jays, cardinals, mockingbirds, wood storks, all kinds of egrets and other wading and shore birds.
In winter we get the real snowbirds from up north that come here to winter over. A few species of vulture take up winter residence here. The sky is alive with birds of all kinds in the winter. I love when the robins come here which they rarely do. Sometimes if its been really cold further north we'll get flocks of them.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 9/30/2009 10:57:17 PM | I have noticed that robins and squirrels vary greatly from place to place in the states.
I am from Texas and have lived on the East coast, West coast, now the Great Lakes and of course in Texas on the Gulf coast, plus many other places in between.
In Texas, the squirrels are fat and a really pretty blue grey color with big bushy tails. Robins are small, not much bigger than a sparrow, but have a pretty red breast.
In San Fran, Sacramento, Tahoe corridor the squirrels are scrawny and the tails are very sparse and are a dull tan. The robins are quite large and lean, but not as brightly colored.
Here in Michigan there are tiny solid black squirrels and medium sized grey squirrels with a bit of tan on them. The robins are medium sized and not as brightly colored, have longer tails and white around the eyes, but also quite fat and round as winter comes. They are often photographed during snow in winter all puffed on a branch and these photos are often used for Christmas cards and for photo posters that are framed for home decor. But I think the male and female cardinal in snow are even prettier.

| What kind of wildlife lives where you live? Posted: 10/4/2009 5:41:25 PM | Awh, the coastal areas here are full of wildlife. Mostly your shore and song birds. Osprey's, Woodstorks, Gulls, Herons, Eagles, Owls, otters, horseshoe crabs, jellyfish, and occassionally you can find a fisherman pulling in a shark, trout, or red fish.
Deer, racoons, and possums of course also!
Savannah, GA is an intercoastal waterway which is also a great stopping off point for birds migrating to warmer climates from the northern areas.
