Random I wonder if dishwashing soap would break down the fat the way it does on dishes or if you get food grease on clothing? Maaaam mineral oil is so heavy. if it would, just pour some on and let it set awhile to start breaking down the fat, later rub it and rinse liek crazy let it dry naturally, check it and do it all over again until it is gone.

I was thinking DAWN but then you hear nightmares of floods of suds all over................mineral oil on the kitchen floor was bad enough. I don't need a basement full of suds next!

So its soaking in salt, borax, bleach, detergent, a little oxyclean. been overnight.

Does it suds up like regular detergent? I have this peeve about suds. If I don’t see bubbles then it doesn’t feel clean. I’m allergic to Ivory soap so I’m wondering if you could use any kind of soap that you like. I don’t see where it would make any difference.

The best de-oiler….. Try Dawn dishwashing liquid. My dog roiled in motor oil once and I couldnt get it off so called my Vet and he told me to use Dawn. Worked great! The blue regular formula not the kind with bleach or scent just the plain blue. Dawn will also kill fleas if by chance your pets get fleas this summer just don’t get it in their eyes and use a conditioner after so their skin doesn’t get dry.

Stanley home products makes the best degreaser I've ever run across. I love it. It worked wonders on my boys' football pants, too.

I just wanted to say thank you to the OP for posting this. I have been using this mixture for a couple of months now and it is SO economical, and good for the environment too, thanks!! I usually use it only on my warm/hot water loads, because of the soap not disintegrating in cold, but it's still so much cheaper than going through a bottle of $12 commercial soap every month.

I found a solution to my static problem..

I use a piece of tin foil and ball it up and throw it in the dryer... no static! And you can use it for quite a few loads.

Does anyone have a good recipie for making your own organic soft soap, and maybe some moisturizers. I recently read that there are over 1,20o ingredients considered unsafe in Europe, and here in the US we only ban 12 of those ingred. Would be great to not only make own laundry detergent, and dryer sheets, but also, soap, shampoo, etc.

i get a gallon jug of dr. broner's unscented supermild soap for babies, split it up into 8 oz portions and mix it with different essential oils, depending on the use. for laundry, i use lavender, to scrub the kitchen, i use lemon, pine and orange, and lavender, rosemary and tea tree for the bathroom. i've even mixed it with lavender, ylang-ylang, chamomile and peppermint for a really nice body cleanser.

Re: safe soft soap. That post is right on. People would be shocked at what they are putting on their bodies and the health consequences to some of us. I don't make mine any more because I found a specific product that I use. I have to be SO SO careful re: chemicals. Without posting the specific link, although I will if we don't have someone getting narky, google NTEF-USA go to the website and scroll down on the left to safe shopping (I think that's what the button says); look specifically for a company called Living Source and find something called AFM Safecoat. I swear by that stuff. I think there are other places to buy it, but that's the link I know about.
I'm on a phone call right now and my friend tells me another company carries it and will match the price of Living Source with no shipping ( I think you pay California sales tax but that's cheaper than shipping). Allerg.com
You might also google afm safecoat
If you want to mess with it, you can shred up Fragrance Free Dove hand soap and add water shake like crazy or whiz it up in a blender.

...'scuse me...but why does a front load washer require different soap? My mother had one 40 years ago...and I'm sure she used the same soap she's using now in her trusty Maytag. I think you might have some issues with the amount of soap that you use...because front loaders use much less water...but I can't figure out why it should have to be different, it's trying to accomplish the same thing.

I tried this laundry concoction this morning. It caused my navy blue sheets and other dark clothes to fade by several shades and failed to take out the strong smell of chlorine from my swimsuit and towel. My whites seem bright but aren't as clean as I'd expected after all the hype I read in this thread. I'd give it a 3/10 rating.

I use the soap mixture all the time... in my new front loading machine too.

never had a problem with the parts getting gunked up ...and as for the fading...that is strange... I have navy blue duvet covers for my bed...with matching sheets and cases and my colours have not faded one bit.

I wash all my kids clothes in the soap too....I use more than one spoonful ususally....I have found that the clothes smell cleaner... I don't overload my machine btw.. I leave room for the blankets and larger pieces to be evenly washed.

Consumer Reports did an article on fabric softener years ago. They thought dryer sheets were pretty useless. Liquid fabric softener, they said, deposits a fine coating of wax which is what makes the fabric feel soft. I never used fabric softener (we got by fine without it when I was growing up) but when I started practicing massage, I found that the liquid fabric softener made the sheets a little more resistant to being stained by the oil

I'm wondering where to find borax. They used to have it in the local grocery and don't any more. In fact, they have hardly any powders. All the laundry products are liquid.

I like Tide Free... best detergent you can buy. A main ingredient the cheaper products don't include is an enzyme. Gotta have it for most organic soiling. The problem with mixing your own is knowing what pH your washing in... a lady a couple posts back mentioned it fading her sheets - that is probably the problem. With Tide the detergent/enzyme is such a higher quality than most that I typically only use 1/2 the suggested amount.

Any of the products that say they "whiten" or "sunshine bright"... whatever. ANY of them that don't say "no dyes"... ever wonder why a detergent would include a dye? A colorant is NOT a dye. They add a clear dye that fluoresces in UV light - dyes your clothes so they look cleaner in daylight. Which is why your clothes glow under a black light.

Vinegar is acetic acid. So a small amount can reverse any higher pH that is left in your laundry after it's washed. But don't add it in WITH the detergent or you'll neutralize much of the cleaning ability. AND acid is used to set dyes. So any stains that aren't completely removed might be set by the acidity of vinegar. (same as heat will)

Any of the products that have "oxy" in the title is an oxygenating bleach. Hydrogen peroxide is a great example of this. Which also makes a cheap spotting agent. It won't clean grease or oil... but a stain that you haven't been able to get out and you're ready to throw out the article would be a good thing to try. Take a cup of Hydrogen Peroxide and add a tablespoon of ammonia (non-sudsing) - the ammonia will quickly activate the hydrogen peroxide. You'll have only about 15 minutes to work with it. Apply it to the stain, making sure it's well soaked. Cover it with plastic wrap and try to set it in direct sunlight. I've even gotten mustard out with this.

Ha! I know waaaaaay too much about cleaning... lol. No wonder I'm alone!!

I know its doesnt have anything to do with laundry...Heres some cleaners for tubs, sinks and tiles...
1 cup borax,1 cup bakeing soda, 1 oz castile soap , 1 cup water, about 15 drops of your choice of essential oils.

Air freshener:
for 375 ml sprayer
A dime size (on the bottom of your bottle) of castile soap
30 drops of your choice of essentail oils
fill the bottle with distill water ( make sure to leave a little bit room on top of bottle so your able to shake)

Shake every time before useing.

Here's a laundry tip if it hasn't been mentioned. When you wash jeans, shirts or other clothing for the first time, add a cup of vinegar to the wash and it will set the dye, to prevent fading over time.
