What exactly does hang out mean

I thought when men had this on their profile...it meant "I am looking to chill out and have fun only....sex being the ultimate goal". I thought "hang out" was the subtle way out...because most ppl don't want to admit they are looking for "intimate encounters" on here. Which is why I usually don't reply back to men who have "hang out" on their profile. But maybe I am wrong?

It all depends on why people use POF in the first place. I'm not here to make friends who will go to the movies with me or sit in the coffee shop chillin'. I'm here looking for a date, and to me that's the whole point of a single's site.

Someone who's on a single's site who is looking to "hang out" makes me think they should replace that with "booty call."

Nothing wrong with a booty call, mind you. It's just that it would be far better if people were honest about it. A lot of people don't want to be branded with the "intimate encounters" label, and try to veil their motivations with the "hang out" tag instead.

It's all part of the problem of people not being able to be honest.

Hang Out-encounter-FWB-Bootycall-WTF!?!?!?

Why do people have to read into shit so much? Everythings gotta be a ****in read-between-the-lies-gray-area-alterior-motive-butt****.

Look I'm sorry for the hostility but damn.

"Hang Out": You know what friends do when they get together... just hang out and enjoy each others company.

When I hang out with my friends I don't worry about them wanting a frikkin booty call and then avoiding me the next day lol.

It's just a simple term that everyone has had to frikkin **stardize and labelize and blenderize untill everyone who hears and gets all squeemish and assumes theres an alterior motive.

Friends hang out... it means you're lookin for some one to hang out with and be friends with.

You wanna **** put Intimate Encounter, you want to get married/move in/have kids/whatever put Long Term, you wanna play the field put Date.

Look how many people are friends and never really "hang out"... to me a friend is cool, I got plenty of those... but my best friends I hang out with (not ****), kick back and have a good time, do things that interests the both of us.

THATS what "Hang Out" means.

That's like sayin KISS stand for Kids in Satans Service, or they call themselves AC/DC because their gay... It's BULLSHIT!

Anyway, I hope that maybe clarified a little for those more narrow-minded individuals out there.

Again I appologise for the hostility

Hang out is an American expression (I think) that refers to spending time at a place that fosters conversation, but where you can participate in some side activity. It usually means you will have other friends with you at the time. Examples of various hang out activities are ... social drinking, going to a theme park for a day, getting stoned with Michael Phelps, discussing philosophy with a Ph.D. or two in Starbucks, going to the local book store, dancing in a night club, hitting up the local strip joints, sitting at home watching TV, going to church functions, etc.

Basically these people want to do the same things they do every day in their lives with other friends, but with one extra person.

That's my best guess at least.

Yes, of course that is what the meaning of "hang out" is in the regular use of the English language. However, in my experience, and I don't believe it is particularly unique, in the context of dating it means casual sex. I wouldn't be interested in anyone who says what they want is to "hang out".

It means what it says, that's why my profile says "no hang outs". Hanging out pretty much means you're just laying around the house doing next to nothing.

I don't need to go online to find someone for that. I can do that myself.

To me, it means you want to: go see movies, go out to eat, go see a band. Just "HANG OUT" nothing that involves naked time or serious emotional time. Just being foot loose and fancy free

To me "Hanging out" and "dating" are the same thing...we go out, we have a lil fun if we click then we go out again, if not we move on...Not looking for anything too serious, just a few laughs, and maybe learning and experiencing something new.

I think "hang out" is a loose word for friendship...no romance at all...could be with a person of the same sex even if you are heterosexual. i.e. hang out at the Mall. I don't think it is for folks over 25 but that is just my humble opinion. :)

Hangout? Means lets watch video games, eat pizza in my Mom's basement and have sex after she goes to bed!!! Don't expect me to pick you up in my car because I don't have one or wouldn't pay to be seen in public with you. Great for FWB!!!

And does it really matter what exactly "hang out" mean?

If you find a person interesting and are willing to meet ... that's pretty much says that there is a chance for anything. Spending time together can transpire in ... happily ever after ... or ... or finding a friend indeed. There are no guarantees in anything, are they?

I wish, people who have "hang out" in their profile, responded to this thread and enlightened us.

Seems to mean a lot of things. Seems like a good choice, nothing expected, casually hanging out together. I'm going to change mine to hang out, and see how it goes.

Reply to Leannnnn, Where does it say sex? Dating is just as much about sex as hanging out in my opinion. In hanging out there is no expectation of anything from the other except doing something together, no one should feel they owe sex for a great meal at a fancy restaurant....that would be dating!

Well honey....I personally think ur right. On the other hand, do not dismiss the thought of "he just wants to feel u out to see if ur what he what;s and needs 4 a wife; even some guys who DO mean well have a lost for words!!! When u get down to it , we really do need you women more than u know ; it's just that some of us guys r so stupid, it takes us time to understand that ur true purpose.
Ask him 2 explain himself in detail....ur well worth the question!!!

agreed - who knew 'hang out' could have such diverse definitions?? That drop down could get pretty long trying to accommodate everyone.

Yes, I agree....it can be quite ambiguous. Personally, I think they should take it as on option off the website, it's confusing for a lot of people.

My interpretation for "hang out"? I think it still is a form of dating, but trying to keep it on a casual level and no expectations. Perhaps it's a "friends first" and go from there?

Now this is what I also think as well (at least coming from the person who said "hang out") It means they will spend time with the person regardless of how they look physically and regardless of their status.

What's funny is, I've contacted women with "hang out" in their profile, with no reply as well. Looks like they'll only "hang out" with you if they are attracted.

Of course, this is a dating website, and the majority of men on here are not going to want to "hang out" with a woman unless he wants it to lead somewhere romantic/intimate. If it doesn't, chances are the other party will find someone who will take it to the next level.

"Hang out" is just another flavor of dating. A variant.

I don't know, but it seems dating has just got more complex these days. I guess I'm old fashioned.

Whose knows what "hangout" really means today because there is soooo many interpertations of it. I hang out with my male friends- hit the clubs, sport bars or sporting events or watch games at the crib! I don't hangout with females like that- RARELY!! I feel at this point in my life that women KNOW exactly what she wants when sees a guy (or 5-10 mins after meeting him)

I'm skeptical of woman that just want to "kick" it, "hangout" or have a "casual date!" I feel now either she wants to:

1. Mess or fool around-WE all know what that 3 letter or 4 letter word is?

2. Be FRIENDS- true (platonic, have each other backs type) friends- NOT social buddies aka "casually dating" or this new cliche': "See where it goes from there" HUH? U knew when u first met me what u wanted-it don't take a "series" of dates for that! I thought MATURE women knew what they wanted!

3. RELATIONSHIP or LONG TERM- Serious dating not casual dating comes into play with this term. She's not seeing 2 or 3 guys at a time. She focus on ONE guy for a change. She's serious minded and REALLY want to get to know the guy!

I have a fool proof way to weed out FAKE females now

A while back, I had "Activity Partner,", is what I wanted. Some of the mail I got
was not what I expected, So I figured I'd best change it. Now I get a lot less mail,
thinking of changing it back, lol.

[quote=OCPrincess]Typically when someone says they want to "hang out" it means that one of you goes over to the other persons place, you have a little small talk, have sex and then the person goes home. It's generally the casual way to get together with someone and get laid without actually dating.

Oh... I thought "hang out" meant something else. I'd prefer a relationship, but in retrospect, hanging out could lead to a relationship.

ejesq: pretty much has it right.

Hanging out doesn't have anything to do with sex, or else it would be termed
"Hanging Out for Sex".

All of these titles and stuff are generalized terms which leave few choices when it comes to posting your profiles. And... many of us obviously have different views on their meanings (another problem with generalized titles). I say, read what the person has written, keeping in mind that it is "generalized". If you say "friends", it doesn't mean that there's no potential for something more.
If you say "Hang Out"... it does not mean that you are going to get laid!

Anything can start out one way, then lead to either more, or less...
