Perth's hour without power to cut Global emissions
WEST Australian business leaders gathered today for the launch of Earth Hour 2008 as Perth counts down for their hour without power.
The Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi was joined by the Executive Director of the Property Council Joe Lenzo, Curtin University Vice Chancellor Jeanette Hackett and Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh in support of the World Wildlife Fund’s symbolic campaign against global warming.
At 8pm on March 29 Perth will be plunged into darkness when lights across the city are switched off for 60 minutes.
Sites such as Kings park, Curtin University and the WACA Ground, alongside large commercial buildings such as the BankWest Tower, will be blacked out as part of the World wildlife Fund's earth Hour.
Twenty-four cities will join in the worldwide effort to promote reduction of the greatest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions - fossil fuel-fired energy.
As tens of millions of people around the planet hit the switch, some of the world's most recognisable icons will be dimmed.
Earth Hour organisers are calling on all households and businesses to gather family and friends and turn off lights and appliances to help Perth reach its emissions reduction target of 5 per cent for the year.
"We want each individual to understand that electricity consumption is a direct contributor to global warming and that small actions by every individual can make a big difference," WWF communications officer Paula Schibeci said.
Last year, two million Sydney residents participated in the first Earth Hour.
It was calculated that the 2007 Earth hour reduced Sydney's greenhouse gas emissions by 10.2 per cent, reducing carbon emissions by 25 million tonnes or the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for an hour.
The Sydney event gained international recognition and now cities in the US, Europe, the South Pacific, Middle East and Central America are behind the initiative.
"Though the response has been overwhelming, we're still hopeful that more cities will come on board and take up the challenge," Ms Schibeci said.

It is only for one hour 8pm - 9pm I doubt some businesses would join in with this but a phone call asking if they are wouldn't hurt . | |
