| Accents...turn on or off? and other questions Posted: 3/2/2008 6:55:01 PM | Alright... I looked up ... pom to see if your reasoning had merit... and it seems it does.. there are 2 conflicting ..theorys on the origins of pom.... The one you were told and the 1 I grew up with... So I apologise for saying it was ignorant.... I do however.. still stand by how it is used..... colloqually....... in oz not as an insult.. and .... I prefer the version where its not used or considered an insult.. and colloqually ... if it was the meaning.. of fruit.. then pom would apply to all immigrants not just english.. so.. pedantics aside.. its not an insult to call someone a pom to aussies.. it is refferred to english only not all immigrants/fair skinned. So if anyone comes to oz and you are english and called a pom... in truth it means we like you... not an insult.......we add extra bits if we dont like you.. smiles/peace | |

Yeah...but I prefer the sunburnt version the Aussies use...those damn Limeys... you should hear what we "limeys "call you canucks My friend spent 2 years in Alabama and he got more dates in one month than he did 5 years back in England, all because of his english accent.

| Accents...turn on or off? and other questions Posted: 3/19/2008 12:53:49 PM | Well it depends on the accent. Certain accents do have an effect on me. I just had this demonstrated to me within the hour. I was working away minding my own business. Then, the phone rang. I picked it up and there is this accent coming at me. Right away it's and I perk right up. I just can't help it. I definitely have a weakness for certain accents. but that doesn't mean that I'l be compatible with the guy. Yes I enjoy the feeling certain accents can produce but I never use that as a basis for decisions.
Instant sparke does not = compatibility and permanent successful relationship

| Accents...turn on or off? and other questions Posted: 3/19/2008 1:19:07 PM | | Personally I love accents if any thing I like to keep the person talking just to listen to them. It maybe just me but, I go gaga over scottish, spanish, and irish accents. but as stated previously does not mean instant compatability | |

| Accents...turn on or off? and other questions Posted: 3/20/2008 11:27:11 AM | Ack... I speak with a relatively strong Russian accent, and I have always viewed it as a liability.
Yes, it makes you different, but it makes you hard to understand. If you are talking to someone, and they have to struggle to figure out what you are saying, that has got to be a big turn off. I can't approach people and talk about things without some of them thinking that since I have a Russian accent, I must want to talk about Russia (which I don't). Or, they will not really be sure what I am saying, but too polite to tell me. Or, I will see a confused look on their faces and have to rephrase myself.
Sure, it helps me to stand out, which in the world of dating is a good thing. But, it makes me tongue-tied in many ways, so overall I see it as one of my bigger flaws, and something I probably should've taken lessons for. I was very unsocial for a long time, before I broke out of my shell by talking to people online, where all of us, furriners, can communicate as effectively as anyone else, once we know English.

| Accents...turn on or off? and other questions Posted: 3/20/2008 4:16:57 PM | i live in the midlands and i like all accents, i dont mind the south or the north......iam quite partial to some Scottish ............tho Welsh is quite hard to understand-if your not Welsh that is, north Wales is much easier to understand than lets say some south Wales accent like Swansea speak.
north/south who cares really.

Do you like a guy with an accent? I don't mind if a person has an accent, but I also don't "fall" just for an accent. I have lots of friends from all over the world, so accent per se is not something that is unusual to me. It is the content of the conversation, not the accent that will make me like/dislike a person.
Can you picture yourself spending your life with a guy with an accent? Sure.
Do you think it's cute? Do you think it's a kind a weakness? As stated above, it is what he says not how he say it.
Would you mind the occasional mistakes? No, of course not. English is not my native language either. I have an accent (Bthw, thanks for the compliment Beth ) and I occasionally make mistakes. Articles are my weak point ("the" and "a")... so, no I would not mind the occasional mistake.
Would you be glad to take the time to listen or would it simply get on your nerves? I'd take time....don't know if I'd be "glad"... but it would not bother me either.
I can't approach people and talk about things without some of them thinking that since I have a Russian accent, I must want to talk about Russia That's funny. I don't usually get that, as many cannot quite place my accent... and even if they try they guess wrong. However, it's really entertaining to see my redneck neighboors slllllllooooowwww down their speach when they talk to me.... since I am foreign and have an accent, I must be dumb, right? Even more entertaining is to see their faces after they ask me what I do for living and I respond. Priceless.

| Accents...turn on or off? and other questions Posted: 3/25/2008 11:34:36 PM | So, here's the thing: If you are with someone who has an accent, you as well, have an accent to their ears.
Why would it ever be a weakness? I would think if anything, that it could make communicating sometimes, a bit challenging particularly if language aquisition isn't proficient.
I particularly love the Irish accent. There's just something about it. When I first moved to my island in the Pacific, I spent my first year listening to the pidgeon English spoken here with it's 'sing song' inflections and local words that I'd never heard before. It is it's own accent and language. Love it!
