| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/5/2009 3:20:58 AM | Post some.
Oh wait that's right.. and Frank Dux really went undefeated and dominated The Kumite.
Look I'm sure Lee could kick tons of ass. He was a trained fighter and in great physical condition. Something you have to understand though is that in most Traditional Martial Arts, a lot of it is hype. They give black belts to kids.
In BJJ, you're considered a "prodigy" like BJ Penn if you get it in three years. He was the fastest non-Brazilian to ever get a black belt. Most common people it can take like ten years.
So, what I'm saying is we don't know the skill level of people he may have fought. Of course this whole argument is sheer speculation and rhetoric unless we can start cloning we'll never know. At least from this point forward though we will have documented proof of fighters true capabilities and how they rank across the entire spectrum of martial arts.
Bruce Lee was awesome, but even someone who was a total scrub in the UFC is going to destroy a lot of the "black belts" and masters of traditional martial arts.

Correct. Lee himself was supposed to have said that any fighter with a good background in boxing and wrestling would destroy most TMA black-belts. It would have been worth seeing Lee in MMA if he had been born 40 years later than he was. But his techniques, such as they were during his prime in the 1960s/70s, wouldn't hold up against today's fighters.

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/18/2009 5:02:16 AM | Pure martial arts have faced off against other pure art forms in the early days of the UFC ... which had alot less rules and was thus more "real" than it is today. Mixed Martial Arts is what it is today because it was the FITTEST. It was conceived, born born, bred and proven IN the RING, in COMBAT, and it is challenged and forced to reprove itself everyday.
As has been said, of all combat sports MMA most closely approximates reality fighting ... while at the same time having to bow to the fact that it is a SPORT and NOT reality fighting.
Some martial arts purist have said that MMA has no right to call itself a martial art. Well, maybe, but then it is true, as someone mentioned ... even kids get black belts these days. What is being taught in any given school these days is more ART (if you're at least that lucky), and less martial ... and would not be the kind of stuff that self-defense instructors would teach people to do in reality situations ... 'cause someone of that stuff will just get you killed. And it's all just too involved. You need something simple, basic, effective.
But not all black belts are equal. Every individual brings his/her own personal INHERENT APTITUDE with them into any endeavor. Not every person who holds a PhD in physics for instance graduates at the top of their class, and not every physicist that does is an Einstein. The same holds true for athletics and fighting. Some people "Get it", some not so much, and some rare few are ... well, their ability leave syou speechless, awestruck. It's a form of intelligence that doesn't get much credit, but intelligence it IS.
Some people have a higher aptitude than others for fighting. And they'll bring that aptitude into whatever martial art they practice.
But as far as seeing mixed martial artists face off against pure martial artists, well, we've already seen it. All else being equal, Mixed Martial Arts is just too versatile for the traditional arts to compete with UNDER MMA rules. And that's an important consideration too ... the rules of combat in a given art favour that art form. But under MMA rules, history has said the final word on this stuff. It's a moot point.
MMA has long since proven itself.

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/18/2009 10:41:34 PM | | Anderson and GSP are definitely on a collision course, as long as both win their next fights. GSP must beat Thiago Alves, and Anderson has to deal with Forrest. If everything goes right, maybe we will get GSP vs. Anderson at the end of this year or the start of next year. | |
|
| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/18/2009 11:03:18 PM | GSP has said he would need to bulk up before he took the fight...so I'd say earliest would be next year....Silva's probably got about 25-30 lbs on GSP....if he packs on 15 lbs it will be a GREAT matchup.....
That's one area BJ goofed up on...but I guess he was too focused on the small guy vs big guy BJJ mentality

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/20/2009 5:02:36 PM | | silva hasnt really been HIT yet. just like couture was the first guy to hit brock, i think it would have the same effect, scare him or knock him out. im gonna say silva has a glass jaw, i might be wrong though. | |

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/20/2009 7:32:30 PM | ^^You're right. Silva hasn't been rocked by a strike in his entire career. His losses have all been by other means (two submissions, a DQ, and a decision loss). The big question is......will Forrest be the first one to do it!? Or will Forrest get worked and put away early for trying to engage Anderson.
Maybe Forrest should go for takedowns and try to work some GNP on the ground.

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/21/2009 5:04:10 AM | Anderson has a good chin.
He took clean shots from Hendo and didn't flinch.
When he fought Jorge Rivera.....he basically stuck his chin out and let him hit him multiple times, and nothing happened.
His chin is just fine. | |

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/21/2009 1:52:11 PM | | well, i think he is gonna know hes been in a fight after forest lol! i think if he trys to box forrest will ko him. but forrest is gonna have to stay clear of the kicks to win, a boxin match is forests best bet, and i dont think silva really wants to go there, but i might be wrong. | |
|
| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/21/2009 6:05:21 PM | Forrest has no power in his hands.
If he can take Hendo's right hand and not hit the deck....then he should be able to take Forrest's just fine.
Forrest's best bet is to stay on the outside when standing.
And when the opportunity presents itself, clinch and take him down.
I have no idea how Anderson could beat Forrest if he can't stop the fight from going to the ground.

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/24/2009 8:54:48 PM | I dont think The Spider is the best P4P fighter in the world.... That is Fedor... I would put Uriah Faber and Miguel Torres ahead of Silva in that catagory...
Jardine might give him a good fight but I think Silvas pinpoint striking will get the best of Jardine.

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/27/2009 7:27:45 AM | What Dana needs to do is to bring in Robbie Lawler and Vitor Belfort. Both of those guys will energize the MW division. Get rid of dudes like Marquardt and Ed Herman who are just hanging on. Lawler and Belfort each have never had a bad fight. Anderson would have the edge against both of them; but they would deliver great fights.
The Spider should fight Forrest, and then Maia, and then someone like Lawler.
|
| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/27/2009 7:33:57 AM | Marquardt would eat Lawler alive. And would take Belfort in a decision.
LOL@ Lawler. He's not that good.
He's rather average and would lose to any decent MW........................................
|
| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/27/2009 7:50:00 AM | No. Lawler is a better striker than Marquardt is. So is Belfort. Lawler is also one of the better MWs in the world with wins over Niko, Frank Trigg, and Joe VillaseƱor. All of those wins are superior to Marquardt's wins over Lister, Wallace, Horn, or Gouveia.
Marquardt doesn't need a title rematch right now. Bring in some new blood and let's see how they do.
|
| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/27/2009 8:02:50 AM | His stand up has improved greatly.
And his ground game is worlds better than than Lawler's.
Robbie would get finished rather easily on the ground.
And also, he might finish Lawler standing for all we know.
I do not trust Lawler's chin.
Vitor would just gas from the pace that Nate would set.
He just has to avoid the early explosion from Vitor.

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/27/2009 10:53:38 AM | I'm just wondering where Machida stands in the rankings now.... I think he may have just surpassed Silva.....
...and you gotta be insane to get rid of Marquardt....
|
| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/27/2009 1:00:49 PM | I'd say he's now top 5 pound for pound.
Not top 3 tho.

| Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter? Posted: 5/27/2009 6:45:15 PM | | I'm going to have to agree with Dwayne here. Marquardt would destroy Lawler. Belfort was very uneven when he was in the UFC, so it's not a given that he could walk in and take over, IMHO. | |
