Is Anderson Silva the World's Best MMA Fighter?

Look, I'd love to say Fedor is the best, being Russian and all, but logic prevails. P4P best to me means unrivaled dominance in the ring over opponents of the highest caliber, and Silva's there.

Even Anderson doesn't regard himself as the P4P best. And let's be clear: he doesn't have "unrivaled dominance" in the Octagon. He loses rounds, such as when 38-year-old Hendo manhandled him in his last fight. You would not have been wrong to score the first round of that Silva-Hendo fight a 10 - 8 round----Anderson got mauled and caught a break when Hendo gassed.

What about submission losses to the lowest caliber in the form of Takase and Chonnan? Anderson's most impressive victory is over Dan Henderson who is 37 and really can't handle cutting weight to 185. The list of fighters Silva has beaten were never at the top of the food chain (Rich Franklin was pure UFC hype).

Fedor is so much more dominant then the competition that its scary. When was the last time Fedor even lost a round? Fedor has beaten all of the top guys, taking years off the life of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira who is the recognized number two guy in the heavyweight division. He's simply wrecked everyone that mattered.

Most fighters don't want to face Fedor. All the fighters have seen what he does to his opponents.

With Affliction having Arlovski, Sylvia, Barnett and soon Randy Couture available to match up against Fedor, he'll shut up a lot of the nay-sayers, but I'm sure there will be plenty of people that will drink Dana White's kool-aid believing whatever he spews as gospel.

Chem, I like your approach in answering this question but one of the key components you missed is discussion fighters outside of the UFC. Understanding that the UFC is the most comercially successful fight promotions in MMA and usually attract the best talen, there are so many fighters worldwide that don't even register a blip on the UFC screen.

I think GSP is the real deal, but Fitch as a real shot at beating him. Fitch's camp is very good and his wrestling is much better then Hughes' ever was, which I think mught be a deciding factor in the GSP match up.

Silva is the man, and I can't even imagine who is next for him at 185 or 215. He walks around at something like 220 or 230, so even the size differential won't be a huge factor. I grew up wrestling with Dan Henderson and have known him since I was 8. The idea that he lost that fight really solidified Silva's dominance in my mind. Funny side note, my friends seemd to think that Silva was washed up when he entered the UFC. I have always know how good the guy is.

Urijah Faber is my bet for the best MMA fighter in the world. I have rolled with him and sparred with him, and he tore me to shreds. Granted I am a hoobiest at best and he is a profesional, I wrestled long enough and was successful enough to be able to say who is good and who is truly spectacular. He is beyond spectaculr.

The one thing that i love and I'm sure you love about the sport, is that there are so many way to lose that the discussion on who the best fighter is relies completely on the outcome of any bout amoung the best fighters in each respective weight class.

Keep your eye on the international scene, there are a lot of really tough guys coming up in Russia, Japan (especially at 135), and as always Brazil.

What I can't wait for is what MMA is going to look like after these 12 and 14 year old kids who are now getting into kickboxing that have already been wrestling for 8 years.

He walks around at about 210 to 215.

I love Silva. But I think that if Dan hadn't gassed. I think Silva was gonna be in trouble.

Tonight. Silva must avoid his right hand at all costs. If Irvin lands it flush. Silva, along with most others, is gonna KO'ed.

An interesting thing about Silva...he never looks like he's swinging for the fences...yet manages to f*ck up everyone...Irvin turtled up after ONE shot....he had Hendo dazed and confused when Rampage couldn't even knock him out....

He must be doing things to optimize his subtle energies...I guess more commonly known in MMA as "chi"....

...there's so much hype around him....but even he says he doesn't think he's the best fighter....GSP would seriously f*ck him up if he took him to the ground...and taking Silva to the ground isn't the hardest task in the world....

#1? Fedor
#2? a draw between Silva & GSP...really the only thing Silva lacks is a good takedown defense and the only thing GSP lacks is CONSISTENT KO power in his strikes...

Penn would be up there if he comes back and dominates the welterweights....
Faber should pack on 10 lbs and see how he fares against the lightweights.....

Silva is just f'n scary.

I love how he looks so relaxed. He just flows freely in there.

And maybe I am going blind. But he looked bigger than Irvin.

Irvin stood no real chance last night. Silva is better at everything.

I think Irvin found out what happens when you try Muay Thai with Silva. You get the SH#$ beat out of you in moments.

I actually think Silva looked good. Maybe others saw it differently. But he didn't look water logged at all. He looked like a natural LHW. He was bigger than Irvin during the weigh in.

And I think that GSP might make a nice fight for Silva for about a round. Then after that. I think GSP would get put in the clinch. And have his pretty little face rearranged.

If Anderson got close enough to put GSP in the clinch...he'd be on the mat in 0.8 seconds...GSP proved he is a VERY smart fighter with his domination over Serra...Anderson reinforced that he is a devastating striker last night....but he still has questionable wrestling.....and I think GSP has the best chance at exploiting his weakness and nullifying his strenghts....

They will fight....hopefully sooner than later...and one things for sure....there's an equal risk for BOTH fighters to have their "pretty little faces" rearranged...

Hendo is a better wrestler than GSP. And even tho he won the round. Silva was in no trouble of being sub'd. Tho I do beleive that Hendo could have won a decision. He wasn't going to do much else on the ground than what he did in the first round.

"pretty little faces" rearranged...

I'd love to see him even put a solid shot on Silva.

For GSP to even stand a chance. Silva would have to make a big mistake. And he hasn't made one since Pride.

Uh-oh. Silva just beat the guy that was touted to be his toughest match-up in under a minute. Without getting hurt or breaking a sweat. If he has 3 belts, is he still not the best P4P? What would he have to do? And people keep saying "if Hendo did this, he woulda beat him", or "if Franklin did that, he woulda won". Well, ifs are nice and all, but Ws count.

Fedor won. Yea! But against who? Sylvia? Wow. Who else is there to fight in the heavy weights? Old man Couture? Green-horn Vera? There really is a very little real martial arts talent in the heavies. Big hitters that can overpower people, yes, but hardly any artists. So, sure, Fedor rules the heavyweights, but consider the competition. He should get a significant belt in the heavies, then drop to 205. Rule 2 divisions, with one having some depth, then maybe he could be top P4P.

Silva looked bigger because he is bigger, he walks around at about 215-220 lbs naturally. Yes, he cuts that much weight to fight at 185. LHW is where he should be! As for the Silva vs. GSP, look at the size difference, of course Silva would have the huge advantage. I dunno about the whole rearranging of GSP's "pretty little face" though. I think if GSP was naturally a bit bigger, it'd be a great fight! I think Silva will meet his match in the LHW division. I'd like to see a Silva vs. Silva contest, what do you think?

Think he proved that last night, even though I thought Irvin was just a jobber for Silva to beat and build him up for future opponents in the division.

Okay.

Fedor has beaten many top 15 HW in the world. I mean demolished them. Silva has beaten Hendo (only legit person he beat) and Franklin (overated 185 div was weak). Irwin is a MIDDLE TEIR LHW. Maybe if silva beats some of the heavyhitters from 205 we'd have something to talk about. Dont get me wrong, Silva is ****ing amazing and for sure top 5 P4P, but NOWHERE NEAR at the level of fedor. At least the UFC hype-machine is working well though.

Fedor is the #1 P4P fighter in the world. He will have a few more fights this year alone, and once he beats couture/arlovski/barnett it's all over.

For those who think Fedor is not number 1..YOU ARE ALL ON GLUE. He is by far the baddest man on the planet. A true role-model for all mma fans worldwide.

Last night he dispatched of the #5 HW in the world in 36 SECONDS.. Let me repeat..36 SECONDS.

He has beaten a whos who of fighters worldwide. Top brazilian fighters, top american wrestlers, and top japanese fighters as well.

If you do not know who this man is..research a lil'..You will be impressed.

-Current wamma HW champion.
-Never lost the pride HW championship.
-Has an mma record of 28-1-1 nc (his only loss was due to him being cut and the ref stopped the fight, the nc was a headbutt)
-He has never been knocked out..Submitted..Or TKO'd.

He is the best fighter in the world. And clearly the number 1 P4P.

Serra is not in the same zip code with Silva.

I wasn't gonna keep goin on this...but while I'm here...might as well....

Obviously Serra can't even compare with Silva....my point was GSP fought very smart...demolishing the guy who handed him his first KO loss by taking out any chance for Serra to land a heavy shot....AND choosing not to play around with BJJ....just simply using his wrestling to pass like nobodies business and beat his ass.....

He fights very smart...and if he fights a smart fight against Silva and takes him down like nothing (which, right now he could) Silva would be in a LOT of trouble....on the other hand...if Silva could pull a guard like BJ Penn...GSP would be done....

Until we start seeing more submission victories and a few stuffed takedowns...it's hard to say he's the best...

Yes...I just caught the Affliction card tonight...and Fedor's display was rediculous...fastest, most explosive, well rounded heavyweight out there...granted it was against a bum like Sylvia but it was sweet....

If only Fedor would sign with the UFC just to fight Anderson....it's VERY unlikely that fight would ever take place....I have a feeling UFC is gonna cut down these Affliction fights.....f*ck that Dana White...the UFC is the Wal Mart of MMA right now....

When it comes to Silva and GSP. The question should he asked. Could GSP take down someone Silva's size? I dunno if he could do it. But that would be his only chance. Cause standing, he doesn't make the 3 minute mark.

Taking him down is one thing. But the size differential could make it a problem for GSP, when it comes to keeping him there.

I know he has been prone to a sub. But I mentioned the heel hook earlier. I didn't really know the much about it. But I have seen it. DAYUM! That was some freak thing. That isn't a good example of someone being prone to a sub. He was beatin by a triangle choke tho.

I just really don't see GSP being able to take him anywhere. I personally think that wherever they go, Silva has the advantage.

That black belt he has is legit. He might show GSP why he has it.

GSP would probably win a fight at 185 between them.

The best P4P right now, in no order, are probably,

Fedor
Silva
GSP
BJ Penn
Aoki
Faber

Fedor is simply collecting belts now.. In his near future he has Barnett, AA, and couture. I believe that fight will happen within a year. Both fighters want it to happen. And when couture is a free man it will.

The neat thing about a Fedor vs Couture fight is...

-Fedor never lost the pride HW championship..
-Couture never lost the ufc HW championship..

So in a way its 2 champions vs one another.

No way Dana makes that fight...one of the UFC's posterboys would have to lose. I'd be very surprised to see it happen while they're both still champions.

you may see the Fedor vs. coutour fight his contract thing should be sorted out this week, as far as that fight goes fedor will destory Randy, Randy looked scared at the affliction PPV when he joined him in the ring.

as far as Sliva vs. G.S.P sliva will win that fight, I don't believe anyone in the UFC will be that guy. When G.S.P. fights BJ Penn, Penn will get the sub
