Many years ago I discovered a book by Barbara Sher, Wishcraft: How to get what you really Want. Very helpful in determining what it is that you want, and how to get there. Since then, she's written other books along the same lines.

Positive imaging helps, too; surround yourself with what you want. Call it fung shui or karma or affirmations.
Some examples: in the bedroom, pairs of candles or mirrors or decorative accessories.
My workweek carry-all sports a graphic from the American Planning Assn. Presently I am not working as a city planner, but every day I see that logo and remind myself that I will be doing that again.

justwant2no you are too old to follow your dreams when you die, not before. i started school persoanlly at age 30. but when i was in school i went with a charming lady who was 86 years old. she had dropped out of college to get married and raise a family. at 86 she came back as a freshman because she wanted to finish her degree. well she died a few years later but not before she finished the degree. when it comes to dreams age is a state of mind really. now i will never throw a no hitter at yankee stadium on the 4th of july but i can still go and play baseball. hey if you want it, and its legal, go for it. the biggest regrets we have in life is not what we did wrong its not trying to do something we wanted to do.

I hope all those dreams (nightmares) I have don't come true!!!!!

I believe the key is not to dream the impossible dream (is that a song?) lol. That's like saying you are going to be a multi-millionaire and buy a bunch of lottery tickets every week, then wonder why you can't pay the light bill. JMO

Not by a long shot!

Sounds corny, but remember that line in First Blood where Stallone is pinning about being back at Fort Bragg, flying a chopper, being in charge of million dollar equipment, and now can't even keep a job washing dishes? Yeah Sly, I feel ya man!

Yeah, I have a book I think would be valuable and very successful financially, which could also bring me some local celebrity, but it is the hardest thing in the world to even get started, I just think about it a lot.....

Otherwise, have had many prior dreams fullfilled....houses, work, women, etc.....which have come and gone.

Contentment is the only thing that really lasts.

I am not living my dream, but I am working on it.

A little over a year ago I made a commitment to myself that I would spend my 100th birthday hiking up a mountain with a picnic basket and bottle of fine wine and my best friend by my side. I realized that I would have to go through a life transformation in order to have even the remotest chance of this happening. I would have to be extremely happy and healthy from now on. I am working on the healthy part. I work out, lost weight, jog 6km every second day, ride my bike. I feel 10 years younger than I did a year ago. Now for the happiness part. This is proving to be the most difficult. My biggest challenge is getting through my divorce and losing the cause of all the stress and misery in my life. Once this is finally over, I figure I will have a good shot at my dream.

The past has no power unless you live there. If you choose to live in the past it will just bring more unhappiness. The present is the only place of power and where you need to be everyday to live your dream and fulfill your life. These are not my words but the teachings of many spiritual leaders. It is how I try and live my life everyday, not always easy but more satisfying than living in the past.

Many dreams, life's promises--most have come true so I guess I am living my dreams.
Of course, I have adjusted to and accepted life and that has changed my dreams through the years. I see that as a good thing--you know--that old song "thank God for unanswered prayers"!
I raised my sons, got to experience grandchildren for all the ups and downs.
I had a successful career that gave me a lot of personal growth and let me do some good things for my fellow men (and women).
I was able to buy a retirement home in Nova Scotia and I remember the day I got it. I said that if I died that night I would go happy as I had a dream come true. I was still in awe that I have had many and know that some never have had one come true.
Life hasn't been a piece of cake for sure and some of that was my own 'stuff'. That handsome prince turned out to be a frog--just kidding but, I am not with a partner as I hoped I would be at this time of my life.
I guess that best is that I have remained teachable and willing to recognize how truly fortunate I am. My dream/hope is that of course I will find someone to grow happier with. But also, that I always take joy in living, be useful in someway to others and always be grateful!

I must have eaten some weird things in life, aren't dreams from something you ate for dinner? Well, i have lived a lot of the craziest ones for sure, i think that's what you do when you decide to not get married young and have kids. But at about 40 or so, i started dreaming of toning down how dangerous and physically demanding my dreams were because i did want to find an adventure companion, but alas my poor choice gave me a few years of learning someone in a dr(actually multiple) prescribed, over medicated vegetative semi comatose state can still smoke cigarettes but can't locate an ash tray. Once again, life is great now that i don't visit mental hospitals and drug rehab centers, moved to a nice trendy area, downsized the house, gotten rid of most of the useless clutter, i'm already busy living again
I think this should be the most important thing in choosing someone , are they a dreamer or a doer, want to go places in reality? Or are they more interested in seeing the grandkids constantly? Are they physically up for doing at least some of both your dreams?Do they share some dreams with you? Or do they want to do theirs and hate yours?

justwant2no,

1st off thank you for making us aware of Professor Randy Pausch. Since I had never heard of him I decided to watch the video of his last lecture that you spoke about.

By the way … I couldn’t get your link to work but I did find a 2nd link at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo. I would strongly encourage anyone to watch it. It’s 1 hr & 16 minutes long so wait ujhntil sometime when you have the time. But believe me … it’s worth the investment of time. It’s been a very long time since someone’s message touched me the way Randy’s did. Randy is a longtime professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He is one of the leading experts in the field of virtual reality & he is dying of cancer. His last lecture focused on 3 topics … 1) his childhood dreams 2) helping others achieve their dreams & 3) lessons learned. I think there is a message in this video for all of us. Just watch it & I think you will agree.

Now, back to your original question … am I living my dream? After watching the video I really had to think about the question. Not because I didn’t know the answer but because I’m not sure I remembered what my dreams were. You see, I think our dreams (like us) tend to evolve as we get older. Like Randy stated, often when we are very young we dream of becoming an astronaut or professional athlete. As we get older we tend to translate these dreams into something a little more practical. Becoming an astronaut evolves into getting a degree in aeronautical engineering. Becoming a professional athlete evolves into making the high school or college team & trying to earn some playing time. As we mature & enter the later phase of life often our dreams stop being so personal & start having more to do with our children & others that we have mentored through the yrs. Sadly for me at least … I found that I sort of lost track of my dreams.

The other thing that tends to get in the way of dreams is LIFE. Getting married, raising kids, building a career … these things all require our total focus & attention. Too often our dreams become secondary & get pushed down on our list of priorities. Then we wake up 1 day &d realize that we hadn’t even thought about our dreams for a very long time. At least that’s how it seems to me. But I tried very hard to remember back to a time when those dreams were still a very important thing to me & here is what I remembered (in no particular order).

GO TO COLLEGE & BECOME A COMMERCIAL ARTIST
Unfortunately I never realized this dream. I came very close. I received a couple of scholarships & toured several colleges before opting to get a job & to get married. I guess you could say this is 1 of those dreams in which live got into the way. However, it’s kind of funny how things have a way of evening out. When my son graduated from college a year ago & then went on to graduate the following yr from a local police academy & accomplish his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer; I remember watching him & seeing part of me on that stage with him. While I also never accomplished my dream of becoming a commercial artist, I have worked for nearly 30 yrs as a technical illustrator. I guess you could say it was my way of forging a compromise with myself. I get to use my artistic side everyday, along with my analytical side & I love it!

FALL IN LOVE, GET MARRIED, & RAISE A FAMILY
It’s very gratifying to know that this is 1 dream that I was able to accomplish. I met a wonderful girl when I was just 16 yrs old. We fell in love & got married right after graduating from high school. And we raised 2 of the most wonderful children in the world … a boy & a girl.

TRAVEL TO BRITAIN & REVEL IN THE HISTORY
Once again, I feel very lucky to have accomplished another dream of mine. It’s funny how sometimes our dreams tend to run together. My son elected to attend college his final yr in England as part of the student exchange program. During 1 of his class breaks I visited him for 10 days & got to see the country I always dreamed of visiting. The best thing about the trip is my son knew it was a lifelong dream of mine & was instrumental in making it all happen. I think he took as much satisfaction in making it happen as I did. It was a wonderful gift.

SHARE MY LIFE WITH SOMEONE SPECIAL & GROW OLD WITH THEM
This dream is a little tricky. You see as I mentioned in my 1st dream I fell in love at a very early age, got married & raised a family. I believed I had found that special person to share my life with & grow old with. Unfortunately some things are beyond our control & after 30 yrs, our marriage ended in divorce approximately 4 yrs ago. But this is 1 dream that I haven’t given up on, it just hasn’t happened exactly as I pictured it. And maybe instead of a single person I will find that sometimes lightening does strike twice & a person can fall in love again & still live a dream. So I’m still working on this one, let’s call it a work-in-process.

I know this is pretty short list but trust me … I had to really rack my brain to come up with these. The amazing thing is after living for so many yrs in which I put my needs & desires secondary to those of my wife & children … I’m now getting the chance to do things for me. I’m also rediscovering just who I am after being sort of lost for a number of yrs. It’s both an exciting & scary time.

Justwant2no … thank you! Thank you 1st off for sharing Professor Pausch’s wonderful Last lecture with all of us. It was truly inspirational. Also thank you for prompting me to revisit the dreams I had so very long ago & realize that I haven’t done all that badly in realizing them.

A Wonderful Topic!

I am going to be living one of my dreams this fall when I get to go to Yankee Stadium to see the Bronx Bombers. Next on my travel to do list will be Manchester to see a couple of games at Old Trafford.

Yes at 45 it's too late. That's the law. No passion allowed after 40. Suck it up!

Damn I had a great weekend hiking the spectacular Canadian Rockies. I 100% avoided any notion of passion though. It's not allowed - didn't you hear?

I was living my dream I had it all or so I thought. I was married was 17 plus years. Deeply and passionaltely in love with my husband. We had it all happniess building a family shairng dreams and scaltping and creating a wonderful childhood for our children. Then it happens one day you wake up and your reality is no longer as it was the day before. It's as if someone or something has changed the end to the fairy tale story. You live your life thinking I could never be with another person or image my spouse not ever wanting to spend the rest of their life with me.
What happens is their becomes a shift in your own personal wants and desires. Maybe the person that you loved started to drift and was seeking a higher level of personal fullfillment. Maybe we spent so much time making sure our children had a good life we forgot to do the simple things and take time to realize we needed to check in with each other to see if we were on track with our journey of togetherness.
Realizing that everyone of us is individual and we all share and have our own journey to take. Some of us will be fortunate to spend a lifetime with one person. Other's will endure a broken heart and will have to search deep within their soul to find their new purpose in life. Dreams change and people change it may just mean that our chosen path is taking a gentle winding stream, or maybe we have fallen into an ocean of turbulence. Either way if we keep focused and never let go of our dream we will get their. The thing to never loose sight of is what your dream is. Happiness is found from within and the only person who can make their dreams come true is you. No what you want!
