| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/17/2008 3:01:57 PM | I think the biggest benefit of such a measure would be the positive health and crime implications for the industry now that it is regulated - having routine and required medical testing etc. would help everyone and it would certainly decrease the potential for crime at the hands of pimps or those forcing other too the streets...
Other than that - just a bunch of married dudes and it wouldn't matter if it were legal or not - my suspicion is that the issue most wives and girlfriends have is not based on the illegality of prostitution...

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/17/2008 10:32:00 PM | ^^^^ This is assuming whoever is being "forced" to be a prostitute has the looks and the talent to even be successful in that line of work. Many prostitutes operate independently and escort agencies and brothels screen applicants just like every other bussiness. If it was legal more regualations like this could be enforced. Some people would choose selling their bodies over working as a janitor cleaning toilets for crap pay.
"the only thing that would do is get guys laid who cant get laid otherwise"
LOL and what's wrong with that?

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/18/2008 3:07:42 AM | Horrible idea to legalize it.
I'd hate to have hookers being able to do their act, legally in my city. There's be tourism just for sex. Not the kind of people you want in your city, as far as i'm concerned.
Would it change the dynamics of a relationship? Would you honestly throw a good relationship in the garbage, for a 20$ prostitute?
If you would, you're beyond help.
I don't know. You have to be pretty desperate to seek a prostitute. I only see this changing relationships for desperate people.

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/18/2008 3:27:15 AM | The only thing legalizing prostitution would do, is make it a violation of their civil rights to be tested for AIDS.......and there you have it! Not only would it end up evading regulation, like most other jobs, but it would take an already fatal epidemic and make it Americas newest form of population control.

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/18/2008 5:41:07 AM | My guess is that in any society where the lopsided supply and demand of sex is acknowledged and its economic solution is allowed, there would also be a generally liberal view of sexual relationships of other kinds, making it easier all around for partners to make their suitable arrangements, whether by prostitution or in other ways. The repressed views on sex that set up this choice between either married sex or illicit paid sex would not be present. There would be more of causal sex and a variety of relationships, not just those two extremes. I think if prostitution was legal it would eventually follow the Big Box example of Best Buy, WalMart, McDonalds and other chains that exploit economy of scale. It might well be called Big Box, despite the connotation. The price would come way down. (Maybe it would be called Tight Purse.)
In any marriage where the man got married for sex, and whose happiness depends on the wife giving him sex, he is already doomed, and sex with a prostitute would not save him. A divorce lawyer is his only hope. Marriage cannot survive the rejection factor of unequal sexual interest. He could get laid on the way home from work, and still be coming home to a woman who didn't welcome him. If anything the comparison would end the marriage that much sooner.

How would it be considered "sex tourism" if it was legal in every other city as well? Lol Why legalize it in just Ottawa of all places and no where else? That wouldn't make much sense to me. and those kind of people are already in your city I'm afraid go online and I'm sure you'll find plenty of sex workers operating in your area. Prostitution in Canada is not technically Illegal there are laws that discourage the practice of it, but those laws have very big loopholes are are easy to get around. The legal risk of going to a prostitute in Canada is ALOT lower then the legal risk of going to one in the U.S Either way what should it matter what others are doing in "your city" as long as you're not witnessing or being exposed to it? What others do in the privacy of their own homes or hotel rooms is their business don't you think?
"Would it change the dynamics of a relationship? Would you honestly throw a good relationship in the garbage, for a 20$ prostitute?"
For a GOOD relationship? No I wouldn't but what about a bad one? If I had to choose between a drama queen who won't share her body with me because it's"disrespectful" and I'm labeled as a perv for simply mentioning the possibility of sex or a prostitute I'll take the prostitute.
and only $20? Only a streetwalker would charge that little Many escorts charge hundreds per hour. and most decent johns want nothing to do with a streetwalker.
"Would it change the dynamics of a relationship?"
No, People who are repulsed by hookers or guys who feel they don't need to "pay for it" aren't going to all of a sudden start going to hookers because it's legal. At least women won't have to worry about being "used" for just sex because a guy can just pay for it if that's all he wants.
"If you would, you're beyond help. "
Remember you said GOOD relationship.
"I don't know. You have to be pretty desperate to seek a prostitute." I only see this changing relationships for desperate people."
I disagree, some guys are just tired of the dating game or just don't have time for it. and if it's changing relationships for "desperate people" so what? Shouldn't they be able to get sex if it's available? even if they have to pay for it? Why do you care? how does it effect you?

I agree with some of this but his options are
A. Go home to a wife who won't give him sex Get divorced get financially crippled in 5 years but atleast get sex from a prozzie now and then.
B Go home to a wife who won't give him sex. Get divorced be financially crippled in 10 years. (and get zero sex in that time)

Honestly!!! Any idiot who gets married for those reasons deserves to be "financially crippled". Does he really think that the woman who would marry him under those circumstances will be considerate of his intimate needs, and his finances?????

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/18/2008 10:59:44 PM | ^^^^^^^ So if a man wants to have sex with his wife now and then he deserves to have all his money taken away? No wonder so many men do not want to commit can't say I blame them.
It's not just about sex it's about APPRECIATION just showing me that she cares about me.
any woman who does not care or appreciate their man shouldn't be shocked if her husband goes to hookers. If she doesn't care about my needs then why should I care about hers? Not getting enough sex wouldn't bother me It's her not CARING and not appreciating me that would. If I had to choose between the hooker and a woman who doesn't care about me I'll take the hooker. Atleast when I give her something I'm getting something in return.

I don't think so, I'll stick to real women thanks.

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/19/2008 12:17:28 AM | | In order to have the possibility of legal prostitution in U.S., I have to assume that church has lost its power. For real, it is not legal here mainly because of moral reason which might be prostitution degrades women's value. Well, it will be a weak point if there are male prostitution also. Legal prostitution will reduce crime (no need for pimp), STD (under goverment control - health department?), increase tax revenue and mostly, as you say, resolve the problem of libido. When a women, as you say, have to use sex to keep her man or to make him do whatever she wants, in a point of view, it is no different from prostitution - trading sex for benefit (money, gift, favor...). So with legal prostitution, a man can know his wife/girlfriend who he is having sex with really loves him because there is no different sleeping with a prostitute than with a girlfriend for benefit! | |

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/19/2008 1:05:49 AM | Op I didn't read the many posts to this, but I want to comment on something you said.
Personally, I think that if prostitution were legal we might see women rely a lot less on withholding the promise of sex for their men in order to get what they want, since an unmarried man could easily get laid no matter what his condition
I don't find your comment valid in older dating. I haven't dated much since 2005, but when I did, I did not find women holding back on sex. Maybe I just ran into a string of those who were like that; I don't know for sure. The same with women way younger than myself (26 through 45), of which I only dated a few because outside sex, I didn't have anything in common with them.
In the 50-68 age group, unless my experience is completely wrong, I didn't find anyone who was withholding sex. In fact, most were willing by the second date, and virtually all by the third.
However, if my experience is different than it is for others, or things have changed during the last three years, then I say prostitution is the way to go.
For one thing, except in the case of Governor Spitzer, prostitutes are cheaper. To go out for dinner with an alchoholic beverage or two and then to theatre or movie where I live in the East Bay, it will cost a man way over $100.00.
The first date I went out on with the woman who became my exclusive girlfriend for a year in 2005, was over $150.00 and that included a Jazz concert, dinner and magaritas, tips, and parking.
If there is no sex until the third date, using the above as an example, then it cost $450.00. A top prostitute from a reputable escort service cost from $200-$300. And she comes to your house. A nice neighborhood prostitute about$75 to $100, and likewise, she comes to your house.
So, if a man is going out just for sex and things aren't as easy as they were when I was dating a lot, then prostitutes are a much cheaper way to go. Plus there is no problem with involvement or dealing with baggage.
No I don't use prostitutes. Never have. It's easy to get the information I provided without actually being visited by prostitutes.

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/20/2008 8:43:27 PM | | It should be completely legal here, as it is in Nevada (off of the "strip" area at least). It could therefore be regulated , made more conducive for safer sex experiences, the pimps and streetwalkers would be basically put out of business, and furthermore the state could then tax it just as it now does riverboat gambling & alcohol (two other vices which were once frowned upon if not outlawed from time to time). As long as it is between consenting adults, if a grown woman wants to sell it, and a grown man wants to pay for it, and it is done as "safely" as possible in a clean and safe environment, then what is truly "wrong" with it beyond on a subjective morality type of level? | |

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/20/2008 9:37:43 PM | "Horrible idea to legalize it. "
Why? It works just fine in Nevada and the county governments make a pile off of it while the girls work in safe, regulated, disease-free environments.
"I'd hate to have hookers being able to do their act, legally in my city." They already are, legal or not, and they are not going away. Why not legalize it and regulate it so they can work in a safer environment for both themselves and their customers? "There's be tourism just for sex. Not the kind of people you want in your city, as far as i'm concerned."
Thousands upon thousands of those customers in Nevada and countries where prostitution is illegal are the millionaire businessmen who are the movers and shakers on this planet. For crying out loud do you think legal prostitution is going to attract penniless crack addicts?
"Would it change the dynamics of a relationship? Would you honestly throw a good relationship in the garbage, for a 20$ prostitute?"
Now we get through the bs to the root of the issue. You feel threatened by prostitution. If your man wants to step out on you he will not have to find a prostitute to do it, although a legal prostitute Nevada style would probably be safer than the neighbor's wife.
"I don't know. You have to be pretty desperate to seek a prostitute. I only see this changing relationships for desperate people."
In the legal houses of Nevada and the western countries where prostitution is legal and regulated, thousands upon thousands of the customers are wealthy traveling businessmen. This is a fact. Do you think they are desperate? I think not. It is convenient. And please tell us what legalizing prostitution has to do with changing relationships? All your post seems to tell me is that you are afraid that your boyfriend or your hubby will go seek a prostitute, and they can do that whether it is legal or not.

I hate to bust your bubble, but that is patently false. In the legal houses of Nevada the girls are required by law to be tested for all std's every five days. If they do not do this they cannot work. If they have any sort of communicable disease whatsoever, they cannot work. When they work they can only perform sexual acts safely. Nothing is done without a condom. If you have further misconceptions, go to http://nvbrothels.net/forum/ and do some reading.

| What if Prostitution was Legal? Posted: 3/20/2008 10:04:17 PM | -Pros- -Less crime, no bad neighborhoods with prostitution, no more rapes and crimes against prostitutes, control over diseases, more money for women and the government, men happier and more focused on work, etc.
-Cons- -Women will be miserable! It will like Japan where most wives don't get much sex and will be emotionally hurt resulting from men visiting brothels. This is why America don't allow prostitution becuz women rather have a bunch of whores beaten down than most of the country in horrible relationships.
