| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/9/2008 5:17:39 PM | I'm a jazz musician. I enjoy several different styles of music, and perform a lot of different stuff, but probably wouldn't do anything besides jazz (and other improv based music) if I didn't get paid to.
I love improvisation. In jazz a group of total strangers can get together and really communicate to each other without saying anything (there is a basic repetoire that all jazz musicians share that you use as a springboard for improv). When the music's burnin and everybody's really swinging and you strike a groove, it's like nothing else. Nobody's thinking; Only playing and letting it happen. That grooove doesn't always happen, but all of my playing (and hopefully the playing of those I'm sharing the stage with) is done in pursuit of it.
I'm a guitar player. I've been playing since I was 11. I'm mostly self taught (for the first 11 years I played), but attended the certificate program at the Atlanta Institute of Music when I was 20. Once I learned about jazz, it was all down hill. I was forever consigned to absolutely adore a style of music that only 3 percent of people in America like! Darn it!! Why can't I make myself like Britney's music? :-)
Luckilly I like a lot of other stuff as well and can make ends meet by playing pop, rock, and other stuff.
If anyone's interested in hearing me, I have a my space page that I can point you to. There's videos and mp3's on there. And lot's of pictures of my awesome Bassett Hound Frank too!

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/10/2008 5:40:55 PM | i play drums, sing, draw and am starting to write my own songs by ear. my drawings are pen and ink and they can be considered abstract. i like to call my drawings professional doodleing. my songs are a bit shakey but the more i do i can see improovment. as far as my song writing style goes my main influences are jazz and krautrock. for those who are not famillur with the tag krautrock, it is the german sect of progressive rock. i am also in to afro pop, funk, psych, roots reggae and ambiant electronic witch might seep more into my sense of song in the future.
peace all! | |

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/11/2008 9:42:47 PM | Since you asked...
I've been a professional animation designer for a tick over two decades now. (Mainly at Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros.)
So, I just have to do whatever I'm assigned in whatever style is called for. There is an army of men and women in the business who are called on to do the same. To an outsider, it would probably sound special, but I have so many similarly skilled co-workers that it doesn't feel special. ESPECIALLY next to the ones that are a lot more talented than I am!
Animation is probably more complicated than most people think. It takes a LOT of people to do the simplest TV show. A lot more to do a feature film.
Personally, I've been lucky enough to do a number of things but my speciality is designing Props, Vehicles and Effects for various TV shows and video movies.
To explain: There are three basic types of designers on a series.
1. Character Designers: Responsible for coming up with new characters, animals, anything with a pulse, basically.
2. BG Layout: They design all the new environments called for in the story.
3. Prop Designer (me): Everything animating object that isn't a character. Whatever they pick up, ride in, move. etc.
My basic tool of choice is a 2B pencil, a flexible ruler and a lot of circle templates. I also rely on PhotoShop a lot. When I'm called on to design something complicated from a number of angles, I'll build a crude-looking digital reference model using Lightwave. Then I print out the angles I need, add detail by hand, and do a good tracing. Makes me look like I know mechanical perspective better than I do since the Lightwave model does the heavy lifting there.
In my pre-PhotoShop days, I was a pretty good marker colorist, but that skill has atrophied along with my once good marker set. PhotoShop is a million times better than markers! (except I miss having an original drawing instead of a digital image).
I'm pretty good at the prop thing, but lousy at characters (strange, I know) and I'm much more of a pencil artist than a painter. Those people are amazing!
Once in a blue moon, I get to write. That's by far the most fun for me, but the politics...don't get me started about the politics.

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/11/2008 9:57:52 PM | I'm a part time musician, on account of work and school, however I'd love the chance to make it my full time career. I've been playing piano for 23 years, and my love for that instrument lead me to keyboards, synthesizers and ultimately to laptop production and studio work. I fronted a short-lived industrial/EBM band named MaK1nA for a while, but I dropped out of the scene due to disagreements and issues with other people. Plus I needed to get myself back into school for other personal reasons.
Any how, as for gear, well, I have: Yamaha DX-7 Digital Analog Modeling Synth MIDIMan Oxygen 8 (older version) MIDI Controller Mac Book Pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo laptop w/ Reason 4.0.1, Logic Express 7, Garageband 2.0, reFX Nexus, and Abelton Live M-Audio USB Duo external sound card Shure Mics, cables, a Digidesign vox fx pedal, and lots of power strips lol
I mainly write trance, techno, and various forms of industrial and synth pop music.
I've been wanting to get back into the scene again, but with my schedule the way it is, it's been hard just finding the time to get to writing a few key tracks to get started. Hopefully soon, with summer fast approaching, I'll have the time to get some things hammered out.

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/13/2008 7:28:34 PM | I don't necessarily call it 'art' - I just do what I do - which is 'generally creative stuff'.
Mainly graphic novels, with mature themes. Fetish art and erotica in general. Sci-fi and fantasy illustration.
Prose fiction, song lyrics, music, generally in a rock/punk stylee.

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/13/2008 11:43:06 PM | I sculpt...with a chisel 'n hammer...and I loooove it...time consuming but worth it....mostly I use hebel as it's so easyto work with.
I paint, write songs, play guitar etc [blah] ...am a pro photographer and whilst others call my work 'art', my 'shots' really are just moments caught by the click of a button...it's a way pretty planet, the camera does the rest, always feel humble when folks admire my work. Not so with my sculpting though...[big silly gin]...I gets kinda proud when I've finished one of those.

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/25/2008 11:33:20 PM | heh, heh, Brava! Some of my art is on profile as well dear friend. I tend to dabble in oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors. But, I tend to paint murals in the North Texas region. The majority of my work have been childrens rooms and some faux finishes. It pays the rent in such great fashion!
But I do love to paint gothic figures. Landscapes of South America. Fantasy art. I tend to have above all an "impressionistic technique". You can consider me an American Impressionist lost in the southwest,,,, hating southwest art. Well,, hate is a harsh word. How about its not my thing. Ohh,, I do hate floral painting. Yes, I do. LOL!
Im also giving a shot into sculpting as well. Wish me luck!

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/26/2008 6:58:12 AM | Wow, lots of painters, singers, musicians and writers here. I can't draw a straight line, sure as heck can't sing and pretty much have fumble fingers as far as playing an instrument. I do enjoy a little writing but my spelling stinks, guess that's what spell check is for. LOL
I love all forms of art and found my thing in jewelry making. In my younger years I was really into clothes design. Always making my own clothes and also for friends. loved working on designs for school and community plays.

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 6/26/2008 11:17:39 PM | Another artist here. I'm a long time drawer, I like doing still life stuff and abstracts, but I've been working on my people-drawing skills lately. Some people I try to draw lifelike, some I do in a semi-comic style, like manga-ish.
Mainly my artistic outlet is writing video games though. I like designing gameplay elements and I get to use computer art I make for graphics. I do 3D renderings and sprite art depending on the game. Been doing that for 7+ years. Very fun. Right now I'm making a Tetris Attack/Puzzle Fighter hybrid game, and the characters are all chibi sprite versions of me and my friends. Animations are drawn on paper in traditional storyboard manner, then I scan them in and colour them. Lots of graphic effects to make too.
One area I lack in is music though. I need to learn to play an instrument one day ....

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 7/22/2008 8:16:07 AM | I create large-scale sculpture. Mostly public art, but I love working with individuals to create something just for them. I also try to "think small" and stay under 6' in height, but for me it's a real challenge.
Oh, and not that anyone is reading this locally, but this coming weekend (25-27) is the Bellevue Festival of the Arts (Bellevue, Washington, USA). Anyone in the area should visit and, if possible, buy art. . . any economic downturn hurts the arts first and this one has been a doozy. Even purchasing a $20 piece can feed an artist for a couple of days! (no, I don't have any $20 works for sale there). . . but I WILL be there, come find me amongst the booths!!!

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 7/23/2008 1:44:52 AM | I do mostly drawings. Anything with a tip that can smear, I'll use it. I've done some painting through my years, but I never got heavily into it. I tend to keep within my black and white limits most of the time. Although I love color, I just express myself mainly through shade and light. Most of my artwork is kind of an amalgamation of surrealism, spirituality, nature and the human body.
Outside of that I've played guitar for about 9 years, and other various instruments or programming utensils. I've also written poetry, prose, short stories, novellas and other odds and ends. Acting as well...*shameful face*.
Pretty much all of that for the last...23 or so years. I keep busy on the creative side of my brain. Logic has fun elsewhere.
On a lighter side...I have absolutely no common sense! Woohoo!

| What kind of art do you do? Posted: 7/24/2008 5:17:56 PM | | I write poetry when the right moment presents itself to do so and currently finishing a story. Like painting small wood crafts, creating pictures and other things using real sea shells. Used to sketch a good while back and loved it, but have not done so in a good while. This forum, makes me think about it. I also specialize in creating/styling coat patterns of various small dog breeds, to perfection. | |
