| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/17/2008 5:59:59 AM | ChildfreeGlow,
If you're not an animal lover, an LTR with an animal lover simply isn't in the cards. As a fellow POFer that's casually-indifferent when it comes to pets, I can commiserate. I find dogs cute, and don't mind playing with them for a few minutes if I'm visiting a friend / girlfriend, but there's a huge difference between having a pet for an hour and having one for life.
Being woken up at odd hours, the endless clean-up, and the odor are just some of the drawbacks that keep me from keeping a pet, despite the fact they are pleasant company. I've dated a woman recently that had two gigantic rottweilers, and worse yet, they came from an abusive background... Not exactly the sort of emotionally-deranged animal I want to accidentally set off...
But every time I hung out at her house the entire place smelled of DOG. The house, the carpet, the furniture, her car, and even her clothes that she was wearing because she was always playing with them!
I know animal-lovers/owners become oblivious to their pet's smell over time (unless the dog is coming in out of the rain), but I for one do not want to become one of those people that doesn't know there's an odor lingering about them... No offense to the pet owners out there, you are certainly entitled to your choice and I can see the good aspects of pet ownership...
At the end of the day, I see dogs/cats like "children that never make it past the potty-training phase and refuse to move out of the house" ...
Best of luck OP, I think you'll need to move on to one of your other dating prospects as you have no right to ask the dog-owner to give up their pets, and even attempting to do so will have GRAVE repercussions in their reaction... Believe me.

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/17/2008 6:17:04 AM | if you have to ask that then you are one of those poochey lovers !!
As I said before, I love animals and dog's . . I have spent 18 years of my life in the African bush helping with animal conservation and trying to stop poaching . .
But please !! I am talking about owners that dress there dog's in human cloths !! Have birthday parties for them and spend good money trying to treat them like children.
You can love a dog, as you will probably not ever find anyone/thing that will love you more in return: but please draw the line at a sensable point ?
Otherwise maybe you should be on a doggy site looking for a date on that site ?

It would appear that some people have a very unhealthy relationship with there dog's.
From what I have read on some of the posts the dog owners treat there dog's like there children ??
An animal is an animal , not a child.
I agree...some people go way overboard--but a relationship with a dog is so much easier for these people than having a relationship with another person....it takes a lot more work to have a relationship with a person...a dog just does as they say--has no choices--no opinions---and will love them no matter what. The owner is always in control...

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/19/2008 6:48:25 PM | | Go run..... run very fast.... Unless this guy is good at keeping his dogs clean... you aren't going to be happy. I dated a guy who felt that he always had to have a dog. I grew up with animals.... my kids and husband had animals.... But unless people are going to be responsible for their animals... they will stick you with that responsibility. Believe me. My ex boyfriend for a while worked in another city. Well... he would be too tired to come home so he would stay there with a friend and his family. So guess who he is asking to go by the house to let the dog out? I am headed out to the bars with the girls... I don't have a dog and don't feel that its my responsiblity but if I don't want that dog shitting and pissing on my floors than I had better make a side tour. That dog bit the mailman one time. The boyfriend was out of town. They wanted to quarantined the dog and they had an arrest warrant out for me because it the dog was at my house . The boy friend didn't want to listen to the authorities and took the dog away. And told me that he had to stay with his dog. I have a lot of stories about this dog. None of them good. He had no problem leaving his dog with others to take care of. And this guy that you are thinking of getting close too... you won't be first. In my marriage it was the kids, the dog and then me. Just like that. I like dogs my dream dog is a chocolate lab but I live in an apartment. People won't think of you when they are irresponsible. So stop at the beginning... There's dog hair in your car... and if they have motion sickness... which happened... and the owner not wanting to clean it up even after finding it months later under the moving blanket that you had there to help keep your car clean. The boyfriend had another dog that chewed almost through the passenger side front seat belt... the car wasn't a year old and at the time it was going to cost $125 to repair the belt. I hadn't even thought about the labor cost. But the boyfriend wasn't even thinking about coughing up the money. Even the boyfriend's family members didn't want the dog around... he chewed up a large pillow off the couch that was going to cost $100 to replace... he didn't take responsibility for that either. Think about it first. I wish you the best. | |

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/19/2008 7:47:39 PM | I love dogs but I would take a good long look at what sort of dog owner he is, how much time he needs with the dog, the dog's temperament and so on.
As for me, I am allergic to cats and I definitely will not date a woman who has a cat, particularly is she is a "cat lady" type, so if you are allergic to dogs you may want to pass on dating him.

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/19/2008 8:23:43 PM | I can't believe this thread is still going. If other people are interested in talking to each other on it, enjoy, but I should let you know that I (the OP) stopped reading it with the last message I left on the first page the same night I posted the thread. As I mentioned in that message, I got the answer after the first few responses from people, and actually I was on my way out that night and ended things with him then. I decided that one of the other men I've been seeing is more compatible with me, especially once the dog/no dog issue is factored in.
Thanks for intending to offer me feedback, but I do want to note that I lost interest in the thread as soon as I figured out what to do and did it, so I'm reading other threads in the forums now.

I bet you dont like kids either. Im guessing she dosnt by the 'childfree' name. It seems to me she wants someone that will be interested in her and only her...Im wondering if she was a very spoiled child
My thoughts - if anyone cares , is that very few peeps agreed with the op which is why she is not reading this anymore?!? My thoughts too...it looks like she asked for our opinion, then didnt like it, so got all snotty in the 'Im really not interested in this thread anymore' post.

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/24/2008 1:05:25 AM | Well there is a difference between compromise and outright going out on a limb.
I mean... how do I put this?... You state that you don't like dogs. Well...first of all...What the Hell is Wrong with You??...
okay... now..back to business now.... The dog will sense your discomfort...and so will the guy. That is the bottomline.
No point trying to change this guy...and maybe try to convince him to put Muttley outside.... or go somewhere without Muttley... or say prayers in church for Muttley to die.... or put out a 'Hit' on Muttley.....cos this guy will mourn and go out and rescue Muttley II.
You see... Dog people love their dogs....like our kids. LTR....well.... it will include dogs.
I miss my dog..... he died a few months ago... 13 years old.. my best bud.

I mean... how do I put this?... You state that you don't like dogs. Well...first of all...What the Hell is Wrong with You??... I realise you said this kinda in jest but I totally agree! I understand people that arent really that into dogs/animals, but people that totally dont like them...well there IS something wrong with them. I dont trust those kinda people at all!
I miss my dog..... he died a few months ago... 13 years old.. my best bud awww Im ss for your loss, I used to have 3 dogs ( and yes still manage to have a clean house!! lol) 2 of them died in the last 18 months, one was 10 and one 16. Def the worst days of my life, I still miss them so much, but luckily have my other little angel to keep me going

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/24/2008 1:25:52 AM | I have just started seeing a guy who seems really great for me in just about every way, but he has two dogs and I don't really like dogs. There's a saying, "if my dog doesn't like you, I probably won't either." If his dogs like you, then you have two companions that will be as loyal and loving to you as they are to him. Dog breath and all.
Then there is the issue of the dogs wanting attention at times when I might want a more romantic evening at home (which is often). What, you can't handle two pairs of eyes looking over the edge of the bed, with looks on their faces like, "what the hell are you two doing? Hey boss, you want we should take her down? You're moaning pretty loud there."
The question isn't whether you should date a guy with dogs or not. The question is can you live with his dogs? Because asking him to get rid of them is pretty much out of the question. Especially considering you probably knew he had dogs very early in the relationship.

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/24/2008 2:55:08 AM | Ditto! I feel the same, and I have a lot of pets. Most are rescue's, but love them all. A commitment is a commitment, whether it be a dog, job, etc. I dated a guy for over a year, told him after 1 month, if he ever asked me to choose, there is no choice, and he would lose. I would walk right then if that's how he felt. He said he was just joking, but sure enough, a year later, we were going to build a home together, he insisted, the cats and dogs had to go, but the parrot could stay. Doesn't take an Einstein to figure that one out. He left! To me, that was all about control as well , as not getting who I am. He wasn't the right one. Now, I have met someone, who loves them as much as I and also has a dog. Couldn't be happier. I doubt you could find comfort in the arms of real fancy home, or car or gym. I feel sorry for people who are missing the joy of loving an animal in their self-centred life. If they are jealous of an animal, will they be jealous of a motorcycle , car, golf, the list is endless, talk about insecure! | |

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/24/2008 3:10:52 AM | Ive always found that men who demand the dog goes are usually mentally dangerous control freaks! lol Ive had 2 very manipulative ex's who both, in a very clever calculated way, suggested in a round about way, that my dogs have to go. yeah right! My dogs ( dog now) have been here for me forever, and will always be, giving unconditional love, loyalty, etc etc, there is NO WAY a man is gonna come into my life and throw his weight around expecting them to go. Love me love my dog Im afraid! | |

| Should I date a guy with a dog even though I don't like dogs? Posted: 3/24/2008 4:44:42 AM | OP...
OK, before I read all the posts, you get my unpoluted opinion first.
You ask if there is room for compromise????
Only within you my bet is...
I own dogs.... I can't see EVER giving them up because a gal doesn't go for them.
And when these dogs are gone... I'll be getting more...
A good bet he will too. | |
