well it might matter most how you see yourself but if the world is telling you that you're fat on a daily basis, it takes a strong person to ignore it...so i'd say that its very important what other people think..

I agree with the first part, but I've got doubts about that other bit.

I'm not overweight, but I am a bit... non-standard? in other ways. So I see disapproval, wariness, incomprehension, even fear... pfft! I see quite a lot of competitive behaviour too, from insecure men directed at me.

Should I care (very much) about their opinions?
Bit of a self-esteem roller-coaster if I did.

I'd rather define myself than have other people, who I don't even know and probably wouldn't like if I did, do it for me.
Which is what you suggest in your first sentence I think?

^^^Brizguy, ummm... ahhhh.... (shifts from foot to foot, looks at the ceiling) No.

it is just that it is more socially acceptable for a man to be overweight than it is for a woman.

Dont agree there, its no different for men or women just that women get far, far more sh1tty about it.

all i can say is that those who are "glad it is not on their bones" think how priveliged and lucky you

Im certainly not priveliged or lucky. I choose to care about what size I am and work hard to be the way I am, rather then shrugging my shoulders and blaming a gland.

but all power to those who are skinny - just be grateful you were born that way and stop making every frigging thread about overweight people and how disgusting they are and how glad you are it isn't you.........gets very irritating after a while!

As does overweight people constantly going off on one about how lucky slim people are. Slim people are usually not born that way its just that they work hard and care about their size. Is that a reason to shoot them for having an opinion.....seems so!

oh another gross (and yes that means HUGE) generalisation is that overweight people eat too much........pppffftt!

This is not a generalisation at all. The majority of obesity is caused by people putting more calories in then they work off. Quite often overweight parents have overweight kids and the problem is getting to the point where its not acceptable to just say im fat and happy so what? Its a huge problem and we are something like the second fattest nation in the world. Being overweight does affect your health and the problem is just getting bigger and bigger and needs to be addressed.

So im just going to say, I agree with what Hilly said!!

Same here lyingcheat, and if i worried about what other people think of my appearance i would never leave the house, so now i just write off ignorant judgemental people as someone i wouldnt want to know anyway, separates the wheaf from the chaff so to speak.

Bolts through your neck? is that a new kind of piercing i havent tried yet lol

separates the wheat from the chaff so to speak.

Exactly. Which is why we should all (begins to lecture...) celebrate/be happy/enjoy our individuality.
Personal appearance is not only a fantastic filter for keeping the superficial masses at bay, it also gives (every)one a direct line into some pretty interesting areas of other peoples consciousness.
Everyone looks the way they look (mmm... I think I'm getting the hang of this 'logic' nonsense... at last!) and other people react, or not.
Arrrgghhhh helpppp!!! Someone kick this soapbox away before I say something sensible.

Actually, there's not much chance of that...

So the big ones want to be small, those with curly hair want it straight, the fair would rather be tanned, the tanned regret doing it, the shy want to be bold, the bold wish they'd piss off, and the handsome, charismatic, rich, incredibly wonderful types who have good fortune raining down on them constantly like it's the start of a flood want to be... well, we're pretty happy as we are.

woohoo!!!! i quoted.... finally

You did too! But ya know ronda... significant as this achievement is, and lets not be coy, it's f'k'n huge! I get the impression it would be amongst the least of your abilities.

and why shouldnt women get shitty about it????

Im certainly not priveliged or lucky. I choose to care about what size I am and work hard to be the way I am, rather then shrugging my shoulders and blaming a gland.

not sure I mentioned a gland or shrugging my shoulders. and yes you are priveliged and your are lucky - you just dont realise it. I dont care about what size i am because that is irrelevant - that means jack sh!t in the scheme of things and working hard also means jack sh!t because at the end of the day for some it makes no difference.

As does overweight people constantly going off on one about how lucky slim people are. Slim people are usually not born that way its just that they work hard and care about their size. Is that a reason to shoot them for having an opinion.....seems so!

here we go again - slim people caring about their size and about themselves - they are the only ones that must do it because they are skinny? lol ok........ what overweight people don't care about themselves - when did that happen?! oh yes.....and of course we constantly "go off" about how lucky slim people are - uhuh with bloody good reason! and no it is not sour grapes, or jealousy or pity - just the need to once again defend ourselves that we are not a piece of rubbish you step over. that is life - just do a search of threads on this site and see how much "fat" people cope compared to those "skinny" people. no big drama!

Being overweight does affect your health and the problem is just getting bigger and bigger and needs to be addressed.

so now my kids are overweight........shame they're not though isn't it! why can't it be acceptable to say I am fat and happy - who says you have to be skinny to be happy? since when did skinny people have the monopoly on happiness? so then if it is such a problem then perhaps put things like zenical on pbs so FAT people can access it for $20 instead of $130, make lap banding available to the majority, give personal trainers or exercise classes a subsidy to fatties as well. problem solved - we can get smaller and smaller and then everyone would be happy! oh and make lettuce leaves free with every mars bar purchase - that would help the carolies wouldn't it?! lol

So im just going to say, I agree with what Hilly said!!

isn't it great that we aren't all sheep!

so take from this what you will - you can all think i am ****ing and moaning and groaning (well only in the chair coz it cant take the weight of my fat arse, right!!??) it is not about a crusade, or about skinny people, or average people, or obese people - it is about treating people just as that ! no better and no worse than the person next to you. there doesnt always have to be a label and the overweight one has well and truly run its race, worn out, over-run and bloody well scratched to pieces because at the end of the day it could be your mother, father, brother, sister, child, aunt, uncle, SO who might be the next target of the bullying that is heaped upon "overweight" people.

i prefer to like people for what they are and what they mean to me - extra flesh or not.

I'm fairly sure Hilly has already posted that she would never choose not to have a friend simply because they were '...a few extra pounds...'. Dunno if that makes any difference to you gee, but thought I'd pop it in there just in case.

BAH.......if i'm a sheep.......SO BE IT.........i agree even more with what Hilly said.

What the!!! 'you are priveliged and you are lucky, you just don't realize it'.It takes a lot of hard work to maintain weight whether your slim, average or whatever. It also takes a lot of hard work to lose it too.

As someone who heard the dreaded clunk of a weight scale needle hitting the end of its run,it took a lot of hard work to remove it from my gut and butt.Actually once i set my mind to it,i think it was easier to remove it than to maintain it.That is taking a lot of work to do.The hardest bit is making sure my butt doesn't look too big.

This is off track,i thought it was more a "discussion" about what defines what you put in your body type description.Who cares, put what you want, don't give a rats ar*e about what other's think,be happy with who you are and you are what you are,so??

THE END

gee..... defensive much???? i was so trying to keep my mouth shut on this one because ive been a fat girl, anorexic girl, now i struggle to hover around a healthy weight, and trust me, at 45 it IS a constant struggle, and its not good luck ot thin genes its dam hard work, daily exercise and eating healthy (most of the time anyway lol). i dont attack anybody for being fat, skinny or otherwise, i try to encourage my friends to be healthy including the correct weight for them, quitting smoking/drugs etc, but i reiterate its NOT about being size 10 or whatever, just about taking care of ourselves

All that time they worried about WW3 being caused by USA v Russia, and they really should have been keeping a closer eye on the smaller v larger sized women of the world. (I think Julianx actually started this one…no more soup for you!!!!)

just the need to once again defend ourselves that we are not a piece of rubbish you step over

In fact the only insulting references about “fat people” have come from you, Gee. The groaning chair comment, the use of the word ‘disgusting’, sarcastically asking how ‘bad’ a person must be if they are overweight. Nobody else here said anything of that nature. You have assumed it. All Hilly initially said was that she liked her body the way it is, and she chooses to not want to be fat. The fact that you have taken her comment about herself as an insult against your person, and credited her with making derogatory comments she didn’t make (which is kind of a tactic to make her look judgemental), was your choice. I mean flip it round for a second…are we to assume that you saying you like your body as it is, is an insult directed at skinny people? Are you saying they are disgusting, weak, puny, worthless people merely because YOU are happy having more meat on your bones? No. And neither was she.

In fact the only derogatory comment I have seen in this most recent exchange was where skinny people were called alien-headed. The little silvery antennae protruding from my green forehead literally quivered with irritation when I read that. (Not really…but it amuses me to say that.)

Two images for you all…

Slim woman says “I love my body. I love being slim. I love having a flat stomach and a firm ar$e. I feel damn sexy!”
Reaction to that from womankind….”what an egotistical, vain, b1tch. How dare she rub it in. She obviously looks down on fat people. Stuck up, judgemental cow.”

Woman carrying extra pounds says “I love my body. I love being curvy. I love having voluptuous breasts and womanly hips. I feel damn sexy!”
Reaction to that from womankind…you go girl, woohoo, gotta love your own body, yeah sister!!

Why can’t the slim chick love her body? Why is it taken as scorn against people who aren’t slim? Why can overweight women say they love their bodies and not slim women? (Well… Hilly did, and look what resulted.)

all power to those who are skinny - just be grateful you were born that way

So some slim women eat more cr@p than they should, and do less exercise than they should, and still stay slim. Sure. But more often than not slim women eat sensibly and exercise normally to stay slim. Some overweight women have a genetic/medical reason for being overweight. Sure. But more often overweight women eat more cr@p than they should, and do less exercise than they should, and therefore are overweight. Hilly’s reference about what goes in to the body not being balanced with what energy is being output, thats a fact, not a personal criticism.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

While many factors may influence an individual's weight, overweight and obesity is due mainly to an imbalance of energy intake from the diet and energy expenditure through physical activity.

Australian Society for the study of Obesity

There have been clear signs that men and women are becoming heavier. The prevalence of obesity in Australia has more than doubled in the past 20 years; the prevalence is 2.5 times higher now than in 1980.

so now my kids are overweight........shame they're not though isn't it!

Nobody said your kids were overweight. But about kids generally…facts are facts.

Centre for Community Child Health, Royal Children’s Hospital.

"Mothers are often blamed for their children's obesity, but this study suggests that for more effective prevention perhaps we should focus on the whole family," Professor Wake said. The results also showed that 40 per cent of these young mothers and more than 60 per cent of the young fathers were themselves overweight or obese.

The 1999-2000 Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study indicated over seven million adult Australians aged 25 years and over (60%) were overweight. Of these, over two million (21%) were obese. Data collected in 1995 indicate the proportion of overweight or obese children and adolescents aged 2-17 years was 21% for boys and 23% for girls. In the ten year period between 1985 and 1995, there was an increase in the proportion of children who were either overweight but not obese, or obese.

Overweight and obesity in children and adolescents is generally caused by lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of the two…Increases in sedentary activities (eg TV, video games), use of the motor car for transport, decreases in physical activity, and an increase in the consumption of high fat and high energy foods are likely to be foremost among the causes of the current epidemic. (NSW State Government data.)

Children usually have whatever lifestyle is chosen for them by their parents. Back before I gave up McDonalds (due to a dawning awareness of unethical McD practices, not because I am obsessive about my weight) I remember calling in for lunch at one Maccas and at every table there were fat parents feeding their fat kids chips. I am not saying that to be a sh1t stirrer…it’s the sad truth. One afternoon recently I grabbed a fresh fruit juice from one of those places in a shopping centre to quench my thirst (cos I love ‘em, not cos I am obsessive about my weight), and while I was waiting I observed that parents and kids around the adjacent Wendy’s counter were two and three people deep, getting thickshakes. Choices. But we’re not allowed to criticise are we…..

The review of GP management of weight problems in children also found: Parents rarely raise concerns about their child's weight with their GP and most GPs do not weigh children regularly, partly because of concern that parents and children may become upset .
The University of Sydney

isn't it great that we aren't all sheep!

Actually if we all get too afraid to speak out against the fact that in this country we have an obesity problem that is increasing at a substantial rate, is due to our poor diets and sedentary lifestyles, and is causing health problems…simply because we might hurt someone’s feelings… then we become sheep. If we yahoo and pat ourselves on the back for being proud of our unhealthy obesity simply because more than half of us are overweight and it’s easier to just call it normal and accept it…then we become sheep.

And just on this…

i have never in my biggest got i shouldnt eat this ...blah blah.. but i can tell you skinny girls to it A LOT

I have always found the opposite. Amongst my friends, and there are a mix of body types amongst them from size 8 to size 18, (and yes, I love them all) it’s not the slim ones talking about what they shouldn’t order for lunch and then ordering it anyway.

Women getting shitty is a social event weather one on one or in a pack...and persay socially acceptable this is differnt from being socially the right thing to do

On whats healthy phyisically anyone with wieght issures ..over wieght and underwieght knows its a health issue.

<div class="quote"> I am a bit... non-standard? in other ways
I am so much of an individual its hard to find any mould to fit apparently they broke it making me.. ( huge sighs of relief are echoed on a daily basis) I dance to my own drum. in a unique way.. i am not a follow or a leader I am an independant individual. So that makes me non standard non average!

Didnt actually say any of my friends did. But on the whole in staff rooms and cafes and random events and gatherings fat or thin on the whole its athe slim women who say it .. but thats just my observation.

And yes when a slim women who clearly is standing next her slim mum and sister announces to everyone she shouldnt really have it shes watching her weight ... i just want to push her attention seeking face into the pavalova she is about to load up with cream and ice cream..
And yes when a large woman who is standing next to her very over weight children piling up her plate at the buffet .. i just want to push her denial driven face into the pavalova she is about to load up with cream and icecream !

I want to say that Im big but I play sport dammit, I exercise, I dont eat alot at all, if anything I hardly eat, maye once a day (which is a big problem within itself) . I dont smoke and I hardly drink and I stay out of the sun. I take damn good care of myself, but being bigger people assume I dont, which really jacks me off.

I dont blame my glands but its not only glands that cause problems, some people have been dieters for so long their system just chucks the sh!t and makes it so difficult to do anything without extreme measures. Ive been anorexic and Ive been bigger and I hated myself at both weights.

So really so many women hate themselves no matter what they look like. Its sad But in relation to what we write, I write that Im a few extra pounda over because thats how I want to see myself. If others dont see that when they meet me then thats fine. Ive been told that I am just so hyper its a wonder Im not a whippet

I coming to Australia for the first time in my life a week from today. I met a person online with no picture over 2 years ago. From reading some of the coments here I think you place too much emphsis on a persons body instead of their mind. a person can be very attractive whether they be heavy or slim. The mind is what attracts me first. A beautiful, sincere smile is what will hook me. I am so looking forward to finally meeting in person the woman I met online. She is atractive because of her mind and she is even a bit older than I am. I have since seen many pictures of her and in my eyes she's the most beautiful person I've ever seen! I am so looking forward to coming to your country to see the natural beauty you have there. This is one trip I have dreamed of for a long time. The USA also has it's beautiful places and some my wonder why I would go so far for this meeting. It's very simple actually. I have falen in love over the internet and phone. If I don't take a chance on this I will never know what might have been or what will be. Life without risk is boring. Life without love is lonley. I know whatever happens after I get there will be an experience I won't forget and will not have any regret. It's only what you don't do that you will regret on your death bed and I will not go without trying. It's not the size of your body but the size of your heart that counts. it's always purdent to stay in shape because it allows you to enjoy facets of life that you might not be able to otherwise. Just life life to the fullest because you will be dead a long time! Take care of your body the best you can! Don't worry be happy! - Mike

post 174 racy.. you sound like the perfect mix.. I have a gal pal who is a solid girl.. very but when we go swimming and hiking me in my average old mummy beaten body of a size 12 and her in a good size 18/20 she is all muscle from her calves to her shoulders. You can see she is fit and strong. but big and extremely beautiful woman.

Not everyone is big because of lazy habits, I guess it is those ones that irritate me.. no different than anyone else who BIatches and moans about thier body size, waist line, or whatever, and knows how to fix it but chooses not to , to me i dont want to hear it . fix it or shussh.. if your not willing to fix it then own the problem.

O I am new to the forums..

hmm but it does irk me i have to look hard to see if a woman is confident about herself to be honest with herself and there for me..
I love all shapes and sizes but i find denial unattractive.
I love women who know who and what they are..

I love pavalova m and m and m. ... and I love your think ing on the pav. too i have often heard slim women whinge about wieght while pigging out..
but then that goes back to my initial statement of a confiedent in her self esteem she wouldnt need to articulate her need to keep the fat intake down to a minimum no matter what her size .. i guess they would keep the lights off while makeing love too..
