It's so funny that everyone has to suffer, change their lives and habits, pay for the increases in everything and even stagflation while the oil companies are making profits unheard of, tens of billions in the major ones each QUARTER.

Yep, "free markets", they work great!

Not a thing. I own a 3cyl geo metro which on a 9 gal tank will get me over 300 miles. I laugh now at others...

Aww man, nightwish, you look like your head is a great big lollipop about ready to explode! You sucking the helium tube or what? Only thing I've given up? Hope... hope that anyone is taking note that with the rise of gas prices, anything trucks or gas eaters move to bring out wares, food, clothing... oh just life's essentials... are skyrocketing as you laugh your leprachaun bum off and don't see, your car has nothing to do with what is happening. We're all going to get hit really much harder, why do you think not ONE candidate will talk about bringing the gas prices back down?

It goes for about 6-7 dollars a gallon in South Korea, America still has good prices for a non oil producing nation. The amazing thing is that taxis are much cheaper here. The meter starts out at about 1.75 here and that lasts a couple of miles. A thirty minute trip only costs about 7 dollars. In the US that would be thirty bucks easily. Can't get my mind around that math.

Have you ever noticed that since Democrats took over Congress in 2006, that oil prices have sky-rocketed. In Jan 2006, gas was $1.50, in Jan 2007, gas was $1.99 per gallon, and now in April 2008 it is $3.34 per gallon.

Democrats want to have "FORCED CONSERVATION" just listen to Al Gore when he was on 60 minutes last night. Seems like these price increase are going to hurt the working poor the most.

Have you noticed our president was NOT elected that we're in a never-ending war and how many bodies have been hidden and continue to be? Bring the man up on war crimes and man, Clinton gets a bj and he's a bad guy? LOL Oh wow, bring it on! Since the Republicans in California have governated my state, our prices have sky-rocketed to RE-BUILD something that business and wealthy people have been waiting for a long time. Diversion and since the war MAKES so much money, you just didn't notice? Summer is coming it always goes up but I sure noticed your bud, Bush didn't do anything to bring the prices down and not one politician on any side says a word about it. Put that in your pipe and think about it.

Do you know it cost oil companies 72 cents a barrel to pump, extract a barrel and get it to tankers in the Persian Gulf...A $1.72 for Saudi crude to reach the gulf??? some cats are reaping the profits...and for all the ill will towards Chavez in Venezuela...a gallon of gas there cost 13 cents...13...13....but i guess we need to drive, and oil executives can charge 4000% more...Finally with the billions being spent on the war in Iraq, and over 4000+ brave US servicemen having been killed, this might explain why, as CEO would rather have US men killed to bolster profit, then cut into profits to secure and refine North American oil...here is a clip from wikipedia, about my province in Canada...I have 2 son in laws whom have served in Iraq and are US citizens,,,why die for OIL and to Bolster dollars spent to leave North America???

Oil sands may represent as much as 2/3 of the world's total petroleum resource, with at least 1.7 trillion barrels (270 km³) in the Canadian Athabasca Oil Sands and perhaps 235 billion barrels (37,400,000,000 m³) of extra heavy crude in the Venezuelan Orinoco tar sands [2], compared to 1.75 trillion barrels (278 km³) of conventional oil worldwide, most of it in Saudi Arabia and other Middle-Eastern countries. Between them, the Canadian and Venezuelan deposits contain about 3.6 trillion barrels (422 km³) of oil in place. This is only the remnant of vast petroleum deposits which once totaled as much as 18 trillion barrels (2,100 km³), most of which has escaped or been destroyed by bacteria over the eons. See also below notes about limits to production capacity.

[edit] Canada

See also: Athabasca Oil Sands and History of the petroleum industry in Canada (oil sands and heavy oil)

Canada is the largest supplier of crude oil and refined products to the U.S.[3], with over a million barrels per day coming from tar sands.

Most of the sands of Canada are located in three major deposits in northern Alberta. These are the Athabasca-Wabiskaw oil sands of north northeastern Alberta, the Cold Lake deposits of east northeastern Alberta, and the Peace River deposits of northwestern Alberta. Between them they cover over 140,000 square kilometres (54,000 sq mi) - an area larger than England - and hold proven reserves of 1,750,000,000,000 barrels (280 gigatonnes) of bitumen in place. About ten percent of this is presently recoverable, which amounts to three-quarters of North American petroleum reserves. In addition to the Alberta deposits, there are major oil sands deposits on Melville Island in the Canadian Arctic islands which are unlikely to see commercial production in the foreseeable future.

The Alberta deposits contain at least 85% of the world's total reserves of natural bitumen but are concentrated enough to be the only deposits that are economically recoverable for conversion to oil at current prices. The largest bitumen deposit, containing about 80% of the total, and the only one suitable for surface mining is the Athabasca Oil Sands along the Athabasca River. The mineable area (as defined by the Alberta government) includes 37 townships covering about 3,400 square kilometres (1,300 sq mi) near Fort McMurray. The smaller Cold Lake deposits are important because some of the oil is fluid enough to be extracted by conventional methods. All three Alberta areas are suitable for production using in-situ methods such as cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) and steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD).

The Alberta oil sands have been in commercial production since the original Great Canadian Oil Sands (now Suncor) mine began operation in 1967. A second mine, operated by the Syncrude consortium, began operation in 1978 and is the biggest mine of any type in the world. The third mine in the Athabasca Oil Sands, the Albian Sands consortium of Shell Canada, Chevron Corporation and Western Oil Sands Inc. began operation in 2003. Petro Canada is also developing its $33 billion Fort Hills Project, in partnership with UTS Energy Corporation and Teck Cominco. If approved in 2008, Fort Hills Oilsands upgraders are slated to begin output in 2012.

With the development of new in-situ production techniques such as steam assisted gravity drainage, and with the Oil price increases since 2003, there were several dozen companies planning nearly 100 oil sands mines and in-situ projects in Canada, totaling nearly $100 billion in capital investment. With 2007 crude oil prices significantly in excess of the current average cost of production for tar sands of $28 per barrel [4] all of these projects appear likely to be profitable. However, tar sands production costs are rising rapidly, with production cost increases of 55% since 2005, due to shortages of labor and materials. [5]

The minority Conservative government of Canada, pressured to do more on the environment, announced in its 2007 budget that it will phase out some oil sands tax incentives over coming years. The provision allowing accelerated write-off of oil sands investments will be phased out gradually so projects that had relied on them can proceed. For new projects the provision will be phased out between 2011 and 2015. [6]

With oil prices setting new highs in 2007, tax incentives were no longer necessary to encourage oil sands projects in Canada. In July Royal Dutch Shell released its 2006 annual report and announced that its Canadian oil sands unit made an after tax profit of $21.75 per barrel, nearly double its worldwide profit of $12.41 per barrel on conventional crude oil.[7] A few days later Shell announced it filed for regulatory approval to build a $27 billion oil sands refinery in Alberta, one of $38 billion in new oil sands projects announced that week.[8]

I have not given up anything at all. In the winter months we have serious cold and snow and I drive my Bronco everywhere. Plus I use it to plow snow on the side. I ride my motorcycle in the summer and spring. Always have. Going across country in June for 6 weeks. The price of fuel is not a factor. I will not let gas prices stop me from doing what I enjoy.

I’ve gotten whacked by this twice over.

I work as a casino dealer and as gas has gone up business has slowed down. I’m making about two dollars an hour less now then I was six months ago. YIPPY cost of living rise and pay cut all in one!

My lively hood relies on people who have disposable income… not good.

As for what I’ve given up? Leaving early on Fridays for one, so much for my long weekends… I also don’t drive nearly as much anymore ether, no more relaxing drives down to the shoreline or getting lost for fun, oh and I got rid of my gas guzzling Blazer last fall and got a Taurus too… damn mommy car, I hate it…

I've given up my summer car that I drove in the Spring and Summer months
it was a 2001 Mustang Gt Candy Red & White Rag Top that was my first auto
that I bought in my own name and not one joint with the ex.

I sold it for many
reasons and the cost of gas is unreal why let something sit there that you can't
afford to enjoy cause of these outrages prices in fuel for our autos, so to make a
long story short I sold it and put the money towards better things my daughter's
needs and used those funds for bills & her Christmas the rest went in the bank.

Cars can be replaced but children can not and next will be my 2003 RV that
has less than 2,000 miles on it with slide out 36 foot uses heck of a lot of gas it's
a luxary that has been rewarding but again sitting there and not getting used due
to the cost of prices of gas at our nations pumps.

I've given up much traveling and if I do it is short trips or I fly when I have
too and it's fun to drive to my Mom's in Virginia or the beach see parts of the
good old USA but with the cost of gas and eccomy.

I've cut cost where I can and
live with in my means not beyond them , pays to be wise and smart well taking care
of my child , keeping a roof over her head and food in her belly clothes on her back
that and paying for her education that is far more important than thingsor toys in life
sorry with be children are first.

It's sad at what's going on in our country today , and all of us are tightening and doing
the best we can to survive what is happening with gas and our eccomy today.

Many are loosing there homes cause of foreclouser and well people
are also paying attention to things less selfish things
taking care of the most important things in life primary needs.

I myself as a single parent and business owner, I'm doing my part and the best I can.
Someone said why change just carry on with life as if nothing happens ,
I think it's our choice on what you do in life if anything live to the fullest ~
Peace & Love Happy Summer Everyone Brenny

I've given up 'cursing' at the pump. But have taken it up again as the price went up 20cents in one day, without an excuse like hurricanes, explosions,or oil spills. They used to give a lame excuse now they just raise the price every day.Ya gotta ask is it
because the oilmen can hardly afford to run their yachts?

I drive less. Fewer trips. Try to avoid unnecessary ones. Shop online whenever practical. Comparison shop online or by phone before I drive anywhere. Combine errands if practical. Walk, bike, use my vintage Vespa if I can. I like to think of it as more of a "Euro" lifestyle.

I haven't been dating much anyway, so I haven't really cut back on that. I'll probably be "fishing" a lot closer to home, though.

I cook at home instead of going to restaurants. We have delivery pizza a lot less.
To save money I've stopped shopping at the big name grocery stores and now go to Sav-A-Lot, Aldi, Costco or Sam's Club. I buy "Angel Food" (look it up if you want to save money on food).

I bought an electric lawn mower several years ago, so I don't use gas to mow the lawn, and I changed to compact spiral fluorescent light bulbs (because I'm a tightwad and they save me a lot of money).

If it came to a choice between $5 gas and driving 55, I'd rather go slow.

Some freedom perhaps, not as many trips for incidentals. Planning errands more efficiently, slowing down to 60 on the freeways. There's a good link to a study done on fuel economy related to driving speed. http://kec.kansas.gov/chart_book/Chapter10/12_SpeedvsFuelConsumption.pdf

i've slowed my speed down considerably but people still blow past me on the interstate as if gas were $1 a gallon. no wonder it keeps going up. but even if we all slow down i believe the oil companies would just increase it. i believe it will continue to go up and bring our economy to it's knees. there goes my tanning business!!!dayum!!

I cut off my two favorite things, driving to Lake Michigan when I had an extra half hour to kill just to be there, and doing my cemetery visits. And I'm not happy about any of it!
