| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 12/27/2008 11:40:46 AM | When I was thirteen, I had an inflamed gall bladder. The doctor said it was probably related to an ear infection I was recovering from??? Regardless, I could not have anything 'fatty' or spicy. My mom would take extra lean hamburger patties, broil them to reduce the fat content further and fix me a hamburger for my school lunch. But I could not have mayo (fatty) or ketchup/mustard (somewhat spicy). So, she placed a leaf of rinsed and lightly salted lettuce on the burger. Then for a condiment, she used either honey or apple jelly! These are both used as glazes for beef, which was where she got the idea. Honey is good, but the apple jelly is heaven!!! Makes the flavor of the beef just slap your tastebuds!!! | |

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 12/27/2008 3:09:43 PM | | A couple of months ago one of my daughters decided she was going to make me lunch. It was cute and I went along with it. She put some romaine lettuce on whole wheat bread and spread ranch dressing on one slice of bread, some crushed hot peppers on the other and topped it off with a slice of provolone. When I asked her where she came up with the idea all she could offer was "dad, I know you like all of those things." Well, I gotta' say, it was amazing! I've made it many times since. Who knew! | |

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 12/27/2008 4:28:14 PM | | ^^^That is so sweet!! My son doesn't do this, but he likes to get his own belongings and wrap them up in construction paper and give me "presents" at least once a week. The little things our kids do that make us smile. :) | |

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/25/2009 7:35:14 PM | I like potato chips on my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I have also found that I'm really enjoying avocado or guacamole spreads on some of the sandwiches, certain sandwich places are offering now. Yummy!
Chicken salad with grapes or raisins can be good. I agree with that one.

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/27/2009 9:44:16 AM | Ok I was reading this and BAM a childhood memory came back of me having a very weird sandwich that i had from time to time. This is from the Dutch side of the family.
Buttered bread, both pieces. Then you sprinkle Chocolate sprinkles on them. Put together.
Sounds very weird and I remember my classmates just recoiling in horror that I was eating a Chocolate sandwich. But I tell ya it was really really good. Maybe because the sprinkles were imported from the Netherlands and real chocolate. But it was good seriously.

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/27/2009 10:17:11 AM | | There is a very strong Dutch community out where I live and they sell those chocolate sprinkles (brown and white) in the local grocery store! They are actually more like chocolate curled shavings. It is a high quality chocolate and I actually use them for decorating some of my baking. My youngest, however, loves to do the bread and butter and just not sprinkle it.... but loads it up heavily with the chocolate sprinkles. | |

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/28/2009 8:39:41 AM | Ok I am actually feeling better knowing that I am not the only one. LOL Gotta love the dutch chocolate sprinkles on buttered bread.
Here is one more growing up Dutch.
First you take Applestroop, which is like a spicy apple butter. Smear some on a couple slices of bread.
Then slice some gouda (sharp cheddar or any strong flavored cheese can work in a pinch).
Place your slices of gouda cheese on the applestroop.
There ya go. Cheese and Jam sandwich. It sounds weird, but it's delicious.

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/28/2009 3:15:29 PM | I think fruit and cheese usually pair very well. No reason not to dig the cheese and jam idea.
Esp. like the brie and pear sammitch!

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/28/2009 8:32:15 PM | OK...not gonna read through everyone's oddities, cause my tummy is already upset tonight! Saw the thread thanks to the Codger! (Hi love! )
When I was a little sh1t...my Great Grandmother used to make me a sammy with the softest and freshest white slices, cottage cheese, and honey.
And I LOVED it.
Kinda wanna try it as an adult, but then I am scared to kill the fond memories of such...so if anyone else would do so and report on such...I will be forever indebted...to haunt you in the forums!
Ummm...we have jam in the U.S. too! lol Dunno if it is the same thing...jam is real fruit, more like preserves...jelly is...fake. LOL

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/28/2009 9:17:16 PM | Jam is probably like your jelly in the US
Conserves are real pieces of fruit in a jelly like substance.
Hope that made sense.
Now I'm off to prepare my kids their kangaroo burgers.

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/28/2009 11:02:08 PM | I remember when I was in grade 3 and we had a "trade" a lunch day. We were advised to make the lunch special so we could trade it.
Well one of my favourite sammy's was lemon cheese on white bread. Can we say yummy or what??!!!!! Hey I thought it rocked!
Wow was I ever devastated when NO ONE would trade with me. eh...but I got over it in 5 nanosseconds 'cause it meant I GOT to eat my fav sammy!

| fess up to your favorate wierd sammy Posted: 5/29/2009 5:15:45 AM | | My mom used to make us p-nut butter and onion sandwhiches when we were kids. Slice the onion very thin and dip it in vinegar and place it on a p-nut butter sanwhich. I still crave them now. And another strange one came to me via an elderly client. Grilled cream cheese sammies. Instead of regular cheese just substitute cream cheese. So yummy!!! | |
