Dinner table. Eating better than mac-n-cheese or frozen pizzas, too.

Eating at the Dinner Table, is it rare?

I cook almost every night but the kitchen table has clean laundry and school books on it most of the time (good about washing and folding, bad about getting it back in the dressers). We sit in front of the boob tube and watch a couple shows. I try to get the table cleared for Sunday dinner and we sit and talk for at least an hour. As strange as it sounds, sometimes his mom comes over on Sundays. I am trying as hard as I can to keep things amicable so that he gets the best of both of us. There are no "fringe" benefits to the arrangement other than a fairly peaceful existence.

Some gals might find that too much to deal with but I can live without anyone who is jealous of the arrangement.

I am so glad to see that I am not the only one that doesn't use thekitchen table to eat meals. We eat healthy well balanced meals, just in the livingroom. I do agree everyone needs time to sit and talk about the day and connect. Actually we do that in the car. It started with our old car that had no radio so we talked as we drove from activity to acivity. When we got our new van we just continued that, the radio is still typically turned off so we can talk. I do find that by the time dinne rolls around sincewe are with each other all day, we want to veg a bit and relax in front of the tv with our meal and basically ignore each other or 30 minutes, it's a reverse way than it is or other families, but with homeschooling we are with each other all day and need to disengage rather than connect at the end of the day.

Eating at the Dinner Table, is it rare?

I was raised with dinners at the table every night; we learned our table manners, had our conversations, and spent this time together. It was rare to have this routine disrupted.
My kids were brought up with the same ritual. As they got older and started going out with friends and on dates, it was less frequent.
Families getting together at the dinner table is the equivelant of an endagered species these days. I think it's a shame. There's so much lost; communication, sharing events of the day, the teaching and learning of basic table manners, and creating/sustaining the strong family bond-connections.
