It's a lot easier to define stupidity.

The best overall measure is perhaps a mean of various indicators. For example , Asperger's Syndrome tends to afflict people who are mildly autistic. People with AS aren't necessarily distinguishable from the general population but for whatever reason, a significantly greater proportion of them (as compared to the general population) demonstrate exceptional aptitude in certain fields such as the sciences or arts. Are they genii ? If they scored poorly on an SAT we'd say they were below average in intelligence while at the same time staring in amazement as they flawlessly play Beethoven's Sixth Symphony by ear after having only heard it once.

Meh...I think we know it when we see it and it's just as well we don't get too caught up with trying to define it too rigidly.

In my opinion, an intelligent person is one with the capacity for abstract thought. Someone who can form their own logical opinions and do not have to rely on the opinions of others.

An intelligent person can learn as well as teach, and they can admit when they are wrong.

And intelligent person knows when to speak and when to listen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for why someone would want to be around an intelligent person, or a person who is more intelligent than themselves:

An intelligent person is more apt to have a high self esteem, which means that they do not easily get offended by opposing opinions and ideas.

An intelligent person also rarely feels the need to control a conversation.

Q: Why are you not smarter than you are?

A: Because you don't associate yourself with smarter people.

A high level of curiosity is probably a good indicator of intelligence.

I agree. I think the foundation of intelligence is curiosity and the ability to apply what a person has learned.
I think social intelligence would be considered a selling point of all the rest, if a person is fortunate enough to have the rest, but by no means a separate entity in intelligence, enough to define an entire person. Though I've seen about a million people try to pull it off.
I think, like a lot of other people, this true mark of intelligence is more of an environmental affected concept than a factual one. Every person is lacking, so when they find a person who so eloquently fills in their missing pieces, and compliments their strengths, they would most definitely consider this person intelligent.
Personally, I prefer a person who is emotionally and creatively intelligent, well read and perceptive enough to see the world and all the people in it as a whole. All of this is useless though in a person too affected by it. Obviously, you'd have to be dumb not to realize you're smart, but some higher level of emotional restraint should kick in right after that.
A person who can appreciate and widely comment on beauty without a hint of pretension, or comfort all people in a way that helps them best, can remember back to a passage in a book that describes a moment perfectly, or see a deeper meaning where others fear to tread, would be my ideal vision of it.

What is it that brings you to the conclusion that someone is intelligent?

Being able to understand my jokes is a start. LoL Not going through life mechanically. Thinking before acting. (Does "having common sense" qualify??)

Is it their IQ? Is it their schooling? Is it their social skills? Is it thier ability to be corrected and admit when they are wrong?
IQ is misleading because there are many different areas where people have stronger aptitudes than someone else.

Do you find intelligent people have a common disposition?
Sadly, no . . .

To me true intelligence is common sense and the ability to discern right and wrong.

Consider for a minute, how different the world would be if people actually acted upon their intelligence.
The Oil and Automobile industries would be radically different.
An intelligent person would never buy a giant SUV or truck which they don't even need and gets lousy gas mileage.
Think about all the products people buy out of sheer vanity or laziness, which they not only don't need but are actually detrimental to their own financial well being.

The whole housing/mortgage crisis we are currently suffering is due to the fact that otherwise intelligent people are too lazy to figure out for themselves how home loans work.

Whats the difference between someone with a 75 IQ and an intelligent person who lives like they've got a 75 IQ ?

Many people actually mean "You must agree with me and have the arguments to back me up!"
Actually, as all intelligent people know (or, those who are in-the-know), you have to have a personal association with the number 666 in some way in order to BE anyone in todays society. Your apt or house number, the sum of your b-day date or social insurance number a license plate number on your vehicle, your credit card number...soemthing....look carefully...it is there somewhere, I bet. If you don't find it...you ain't looking hard enough! lol!

I think that a person can be intelligent. I believe that people are completely stupid.

There are too many lemmings in the world today to be able to even discuss this topic on a public forum.

And yet, somehow, it is being discussed on a public forum. O, strange paradox of reason, your magical powers are so confounding!

I think that intelligent people can often be quite stupid. As long as they laugh at my jokes, though, they remain in the "intelligent" category.

I have a tiny freckle on my arm that sort of resembles Einstein

have it removed and sell it on ebay.

I heard of Einstein making a comparison: What is the difference between stupidity and genius?

There is no limit to stupidity.

What is it that brings you to the conclusion that someone is intelligent?

I find intelligent people are more articulate, open to novel ideas and learning even if it goes against what they currently believe, that they think beyond themselves and that they can function very well in most situations.

Is it their IQ? Is it their schooling? Is it their social skills? Is it their ability to be corrected and admit when they are wrong?

This is actually four questions to which I provide the following answers:

1. IQ is merely one manner of determining intelligence and is far too static. Being a member of Mensa may mean you can answer prescribed questions, but it does not mean you know more than most people. Oh, you may learn things faster and struggle less, but it is not the end all.

2. Schooling does not necessarily make one intelligent. If completed, it will show that the person has motivation and a desire to see something through though. It almost always opens the door to a better life through higher levels of employment as well. This does not always go hand in hand though.

3. Admittance to error with the opportunity to correct or amend should be a given for anyone regardless of intelligence.

Do you find intelligent people have a common disposition?
Not at all. My older brother (with an IQ that beats anyone I have ever known) is socially inept. My younger brother (with Dyslexia) is loved by all and is a social butterfly. I also have a sister who likely has a high IQ and is bitter and cranky most of the time.

Trust this assists.

Now, off to study up on Troglodytes and their offspring.

It seems that highly devolped verbal and social skills are what most people think of as intelligent. I met a guy in college who could tell you how many words were on a page just by reading it for a few seconds. He was brilliant! Poor guy couldn't get a date or interact well with people. Some even considered him an idiot.

I view intelligence as someone that is open minded and never stops learning, prefers to create then to destroy, tries to solve problems to the best of their knowledge, doesn't constantly judge others, can make negative situations into positive ones(learning from ones mistakes)friendly, can compromise, can accept others(even if one disagrees with them)and has a sense of humor

An intelligent person has the ability to rationally think an idea through--all the while keeping the idea in perspective to all the different variants--to form a conclusion.

In other words... he wants to know it all -- as opposed to being a know it all.

Somehow I know it when I see it. (((GRINS)))

Yes, let's... ;)

A woman who listens with her mind, and helps make conversations reasonably engaging and interesting.

> 2- A man that remembers garbage night... 250 points

A woman who remembers recycle-box morning.

> 3- A man that has this sixth sense and knows when to just keep quiet... 100 points

A woman who values her man's concerns and such things as freedom of speech, and "due process".

> 4- A man that knows when it is time to say just the right thing to make me smile... 1000
> points...

A woman who appreciates what her man has to say most any time.

> 5- A man that has a back bone... 5000 points

A woman who respects a man with backbone-- even where she might be concerned.

> 6- A man that is man enough to agree to disagree and leave it at that... 10 000 points

A woman who's generally concerned with following through on discussions she begins, and with an interest in truth, effective solutions and consensus, as appropriate.

> 7- A man that knows the difference in either being right or being happy.

A woman who understands the differences between real and false dilemmas.

> Priceless !!!

Agreed. ;)

If I ask someone, " Do you happen to know what time it is? "
If they say, " Huh?"
They are either deaf or stupid.

^How do you figure ? Maybe they simply didn't hear you. I know, crazy theory but it's just as possible (if not more so) that you should speak up if that's a common response to your questions.

Trust when I speak, people have no trouble hearing me!
Ever heard of a sense of humour? Wow what a tough crowd!!

Edit: I think intelligent people should have a sense of humour, and not always be so damn serious.

They have the number 666 on them. It could be in their freckles that you have to look at with your gaze relaxed just right to see.

Sense of humour ? Well, okay, I guess if you find it funny to call people stupid for not hearing you clearly then so be it ... laugh with gusto. I'm sorry, I just didn't really see the comedy in that remark.
Of course, having lived under a rock for the past ten thousand years, I probably missed the sense of humour lessons that were clearly offered at some point in human history. I also missed disco and mood rings so I think it all balances out in the end.
