If they wish to maintain their culture and language to the exclusion of ours, they should do so in their own homes or remain in their homeland. - malley

> But wait . . . Isn't that racist? That would never do. We can't have a man who owns his own business, who built it up over the years, who takes pride in his restaurant and who wants the best for his customers, advising immigrants they must speak English in an English-speaking country. Why, that's a contravention of the Human Rights Act. This brutal treatment - pinning a sign up on the wall - belongs at the Nuremburg Trials.

PHILADELPHIA (March 20) - The owner of a famous cheesesteak shop did not discriminate when he posted signs asking customers to speak English, a city panel ruled Wednesday

The owner of the shop, his name is Vento and I have a good idea as to where his people are from on this earth.

I wonder if his people spoke English when they 'got off the boat.'

"Those complainers are the ones who only learned one language and expect everyone in the world to speak English."

I for one dont expect "Everyone in the world" to speak english but you will find that I AM one of those Hard Core people who believe you ARE welcome in my country AND you are welcome to learn the predominant language of this country DO NOT Expect me to learn your language just because you feel I should, This (The last time I checked) was the United States of America and our Predominant Language is english, to live here you should have a working knowledge of the language Minimum.

I say this from Sad personal experience having been told by a wal mart cashier that could barely speak english that if I wanted to shop at the wal mart where she worked I had better learn spanish.

You do not go to a country and expect them to change their culture to suit you, thats arrogance of the highest form, American tourists are fully expected to have a minimum of a basic knowledge of the country they are visiting and it's common sense to do so, if they dont they have no right at ALL to expect that its that countries fault they cant communicate.

I fully agree with the steak shop and Applaud them for taking a stand in what has become a sadly Sheep like and Politically correct society today, how much more are we as americans supposed to give up of our culture to immigrants before we cease being americans?

My point being that we have as much right to maintain the type of culture that motivated them to move to this land in the first place as they have to hold on to their customs and culture but they should not expect us to chanmge ours to suit them, they after all chose to come here because of the culture they now expect us to change to fit theirs, if they wanted a culture where everyone spoke that language and followed their cultural customs why did they move out of their country and come to the USA in the first place, dont come here and expect us to change to suit you....its that simple, I speak more than one language myself and am constantly learning more about other languages but I still stand firm in my belief.

Vento has said he never refused service to anyone because they couldn't speak English. But critics argued that the signs discourage customers of certain backgrounds from eating at the shop.

Actually I'm not sure a business doesn't have the right to discourage anyone from patronizing their business that they don't want to service.

I once was in a bar in Minneapolis that had it's own sign. It communicated the fact that the bar enforced a dress code. No jeans, no sneakers, no ballcaps. There was a list of approximately 20 different items that were banned. At the end it said "dress up, look nice, have fun."

At first my sensibilities were offended, but after a while I noticed that a certain element was kept out that would tend to ruin the fun in a club.

The thing is I'm pretty confident that language isn't protected as a minority status.

This would have incensed me, and to be sure I would at least attempt to have her job, or make any trouble for her that I can.

As the son of parents the immigrated LEGALLY and learned the language as part of joining this society. I have the opinion that if you desire to come to this country, than you should make the effort to learn the language, instead of trying to force your languages and beliefs on the people of the country that you adopt.

This concept is of course lost on those liberal ACLU loving folk, that believe that the tower of babel was the pinnacle of human development.

It's also a shame that those to embrace the ACLU, forget that it was founded by a communist that created the organization in order to break down the force that gave the US strength. That being the belief in a christian god. Communists of course felt that the government should play the role of God in society. Interesting that Liberals have this same outlook.

ACLU Stated Goals

The ACLU's founder, Roger Baldwin, stated: "We are for SOCIALISM, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself... We seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and the SOLE CONTROL of those who produce wealth. COMMUNISM is the goal." (Source: Trial and Error, by Geo. Grant)

The ACLU is destructive to the fabric of our society. Christians must recognize Satan as the source - the instigator - when the end results of an organization's efforts are only "to kill, to steal, and to destroy." All we need to is examine the (rotten) fruit.

Following are some of the stated goals of the ACLU, from its own published Policy Issues:

* the legalization of prostitution (Policy 211);
* the defense of all pornography, including CHILD PORN, as "free speech" (Policy 4);
* the decriminalization and legalization of all drugs (Policy 210);
* the promotion of homosexuality (Policy 264);
* the opposition of rating of music and movies (Policy 18);
* opposition against parental consent of minors seeking abortion (Policy 262);
* opposition of informed consent preceding abortion procedures (Policy 263);
* opposition of spousal consent preceding abortion (Policy 262);
* opposition of parental choice in children's education (Policy 80)

-- not to mention the defense and promotion of euthanasia, polygamy, government control of church institutions, gun control, tax-funded abortion, birth limitation, etc. (Policies 263, 133, 402, 47, 261, 323, 271, 91, 85).

Before you embrace an organization and believe their propaganda, please research them first. You might be appalled by what they stand for.

Of course, for some of you, it won't matter.

A long time ago in a land called the United States of America. They had to decide what they were to speak and write. It was between German and English, and the winner was english. And there were masses of people here then who had not even heard either.

The sign should read:
In the UK, you can speak any language, and you can demand an interpreter from the government, and get one. THIS IS NOT THE UK!

And this said by a resident of Canada.
Census is indicating that in less than 10 years the caucasan resident of the United States,me,will be the minority population.

Wow...the US is planning to add about 230 million people in a decade eh ? I'd check your source there bud. Secondly, we're talking about language, not race. Hispanics come in all colours .

The country I live in[which speaks English by only one vote,see our history]should then consider a change in our national language??And the census is taking into account that more than 60% of the new majority will be of the...how do you say,oh yeah,ILLEGAL entry variety.

Okay, first of all, I don't know where you're getting your statistics but I think they originated somewhere south of your own personal border. That said , even illegals wind up learning English. It's a classic pattern really. People congregate in certain areas and eventually disperse throughout the nation. Those that know the language move up more quickly in socio-economic terms. Those that don't still see what's going on so ensure their children learn the language. Even the illegals.

Hopefully one day some old[fill in the blank]will be walking across the floor in some deep-pocket retail establishment and fall and break a[fill in the blank].Sues the daylights out of them because all the "wet floor" signs actually say "piso mojado" in larger print than the English warning[common around here]and then all will be right in the world.

Well it would simply be better to avoid the whole matter altogether but okay, if it happens like this, maybe it will be a victory for English. On the other hand, English is hardly in any danger of being supplanted as America's number one tongue.

And before the shit storm hits....I know Montreal Guy was not suggesting a language change........but if you let enough of anything happen....it happens. Let's try and see things happen in the legal[damn,there's that word again]way OUR constitution dictates...much like the way one can become a citizen here.

The truth is that English isn't remotely threatened by Spanish in the US despite all the attention the topic gets. That's not to say that I don't agree with you somewhat. I agree that hey, if somebody goes to a country where they speak a certain language, it's not up to them to learn your language, it's the other way around. Good business practise is a different matter altogether.

Shouldn't you folks out west be speaking some sort of Native languages ?
Cheyanne for example ?

No...its not true that you can DEMAND an interpreter in the UK .lol
You speak English or take your chances like anybody else in your daily life .However.if you are sat down in some government dept or airport and we want to find out what/who you are etc etc....and your English makes no sense..........then we make it our business to get an interpreter...............to be sure of what the facts are.

English is the most widely spoken language in the world.It got that way because WE didn't start picking up other peoples languages....they had to and did..pick up English...even in their own countries and the good old USA is the best example of them all . Just come back from Tenerife ,Spain and its English fish/chips and pubs n lager after tandoori chicken and naans.....charming or what ? lol !

This scenario would never happen because all "danger" signs have graphics specifically for those who are illiterate and for those who cannot read English (Wet floor sign shows a stick man slipping and falling) So an English speaking person cannot sue for lack of understanding even if the sign is in Spanish.

And like the others who have pointed out, English is not in any danger of becoming a language spoken only by a minority. It is the mostly widely recognized and spoken language in the world.

As for the government offices who have the message: "For English press 1" As much as this may be considered a nuisance and patently unfair, just consider that its set up this way because it’s the English speaking public who would actually understand the instruction. Its just more efficient and not an attack on the English language.

On principle I don't disagree with the sign because I do believe that all immigrants should make an effort to learn the most widely recognized and used language of the country to where he/she has emigrated. I would hope that the citizens of that country however would have a little patience for their immigrants while they are learning the language so that they can eat out once in a while but I guess that’s another thread.

In this case I believe 1) the sign is just grandstanding since a person who cannot speak English certainly cannot read it. 2) I do think this Italian-American is just trying to keep out certain cultures that have moved into his “traditionally Italian neighborhood in recent years”. 3) I bet he's not against anyone ordering in Italian. And I bet that when he or his family/ancestors first emigrated to America they didn’t rush out to learn English and did what most Italian immigrants did: Opened restaurants and created neighborhoods that spoke and understood Italian. Can anyone say “Little Italy”? Almost every major city in North America has one. Sounds like a hypocrite to me.

Hmm........yet when 'La Tienda Cheesesteak' and 'Nugyen Chin Kwon Fu Cheesesteak' opens next door, he'll then complain that the competition has driven down the price, ruined his livelihood/put him out of business.

Ah, Geno's steaks, very yummy.

"This is America: WHEN ORDERING 'PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH,"...Vento has said he never refused service to anyone because they couldn't speak English.
I wonder if someone would be served if they ordered in Italian.

Seriously, I don't see how this sign discriminates against anyone. If you can read english, it's highly likely that you can speak it when ordering; if you can't understand the sign, whoever is taking the order won't be able to take it since they only speak English. What's the big deal here?

I suppose if the store were flooded with Hispanic, Asian, etc. people it would behoove them to have someone there who could speak Spanish, Chinese, etc.
