| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 4/19/2008 4:02:40 PM | Wow, I was the poster child of late 80's early 90's hair bands.... I was a hair queen! I wish there was a staion in Van. that played this stuff... apart from getting sat radio or as a gentleman said early, KISM in Bellingham... it's almost non-existent.... such awesome stuff, of course, looking back now, a lot of it was cheesy, but man.... glam rock! LONG LIVE THE GLAM THAT RESIDES IN ALL OF US! | |

| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 4/20/2008 7:15:31 PM | The 80s Hair Bands worked for the few years they were "hot," but the end of it all was Warrant's "Cherry Pie." That ended the whole thing with one bad song and video, which ushered in Nirvana, Temple Of The Dog, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam etc (and thank God it did!) Rock needed to be taken back to its roots and the good news is there was a revival in old school punk, also, well, until Green Day came along. There always has to be a party pooper! | |

That's like saying, the top five bands of all time are; 1.) The Beatles 2.) Black Sabbath 3.) Led Zepp. 4.) Pink Floyd...& 5.) Ashlee Simpson"
LOL, I can only assume you intentionally left out Stryper, well done.
If everyone could discern true talent from the cookie cut crap we'd have nothing but good music to listen to. Oh wait.. better make that "early metallica", pre black. They lost their power when they cut their hair.. whining EMOs.

| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 4/24/2008 7:37:47 PM | Can't believe no one mentioned Tesla.... I mean, I understand Poison, Def Leppard, etc. But what about the four hippies and the headbanger who all but started the acoustic scene?
Cinderella is actually one of my more oft-listened to CDs when I am working on game design, though. I mean, I grew up to Bon Jovi and the rest of the boys who wore more make-up than half the girls I dated back then.
Now I feel the need to go watch either Rockstar or Almost Famous....

Him and his band played in a bar here in Calgary and played all the best crew tunes. Very fun time that I won't be forgetting about anytime soon.

I think they jumped the shark once Motley Crue recorded Home Sweet Home. After that, the power ballad was in, which led to a bunch of "me too" bands. Warrent, Winger, Slaughter etc, etc. Everyone was into the power ballad thing. Labels all wanted "their own Motley Crue" or whoever and were signing bands left and right. The band Pretty Boy Floyd, played exactly three gigs, and were signed to a record deal.

At least he didn't freak out and buy himself some hair like Elton John did. Halford may be gay, but at least he's not a queen.

| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 4/26/2008 9:42:14 AM | My favourite band from that period who stand out from the rest: Tesla
They not only stood out by their music, which was more accoustic and more romantic, but also by their humanitarian side as well. they often gave concerts in which they gave proceeds to charity.
I also respect bands like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Scorpions, because they had great respect for their fans and gave everything they got every single show. You can't say that about Guns n'f****g Roses... I would have like to see the Crue live as well, but never had the chance... Hydro, you got your tickets for the Crue Fest? (unless they haven't been put on sale yet...)
I like Bon Jovi's music, but they are at their best LIVE!
I would say the same thing about Bruce Springsteen. Average recordings, but a phenomenal presence of energy on stage

That Virgin thing, Ozzy's big tour, and Crue Fest. I will more than likely be getting tickets to both Ozzy's tour and Crue Fest.

| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 9/10/2008 1:01:54 AM | There is plenty to admire, but also plenty to laugh at when I look back on some of it.
I saw a Pretty Boy Floyd video a few months ago on VH1's Metal Mania show, and was reminded of just how sick bands like them made me back then. They should have just named the band Motley Poison.
They took the worst elements of both bands and went to the extreme with them.
But overall, the guitarists back then were far more skilled than most of the nu-metal hacks today who couldn't play a song in standard tuning if you put a gun to their head.

You're right, but shouldn't we blame Mick Mars of the Crue for that D- tuning fiasco anyways? I don't remember too many before him doing it, and I also remember how strange it sounded at first.
|
| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 9/10/2008 3:11:12 AM | Yes, Mick tunes down a whole step from standard, but I was referring to players today who are using tunings like drop A on a 7 string. Mick does at least play solos, too.
I'm all for experimentation, I use a lot of open tunings myself (for acoustic guitar mostly), but it seems a lot of the nu-metal players using these lower tunings aren't really creating anything of great melodic value. It's primarily chugging on the lowest string, and perhaps throwing in some augmented chords here and there for a little bit of "dark" tension. It just sounds like a ruckus to me, for the most part.

BORN AGAIN | |

| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 9/10/2008 5:00:48 AM | Gillan's masterpiece | Reviewer: Sagat | 10/3/2007
Its true many Sabbath fans and Deep Purple fans overlook this one easily, but what a mistake indeed. If you're a fan of both bands, especially Ian Gillan's crazy vocal style, this is a must-hear album. EVERY track on this has a vocal delivery worth Child Of Time or surpassing it. Never has Gillan sung all-out like in Born Again before or since, this is a masterpiece that even the man himself is proud of. If one track must be chosen as a sample, don't try Zero The Hero, give Disturbing The Priest a listen, one of the most evil metal songs I've heard, all subgenres confounded.

| 80's hairbands/ metalbands....... Posted: 9/10/2008 5:29:33 AM | I see Deep Purple more of a 70's band. They only released 2 albums in 1980s (Perfect Strangers, 1984 & House of Blue Light, 1987).
Their best and most famous work was probably from In Rock (1970), that had "Child In Time," through their most famous/best work, Machine Head (1972), with "Smoke On The Water" etc, & Who Do We Think We Are (1973), with probably their best single ever, "Woman From Tokyo."
It was that Mark II lineup before Gillan (replaced by David Coverdale) and Blackmore left. Those lineup changes didn't help the band and they fizzled out by the end of the 1970s.
I liked Perfect Strangers because they used that "Machinehead" lineup. I used to joke that they took a bunch of outtakes from 1973 and recorded them 11 years later because it sounded very much like their old work. Which I thought was a good thing.
Of course Ian Gillan left Black Sabbath to rejoin his old band. There's an old article in "Circus" or "Hit Parader" magazine (can't remember) from the 1980s. In it, Gillan talks about his time with Sabbath. He said that Iommi & company got him completely "arseholed" in a pub before he decided to join the band.
They recorded Born Again in an old castle. Gillan said he recorded his vocals in the daytime while the other guys would get up around the supper hour and not record till late at night.
I remember Born Again filling up a lot of bargain bins way back but now its considered a lost classic given the lineup. I've heard a few songs. Not bad. I think its worth checking out but its only available on import in North America.
Their stage set from that 1983-84 tour was the inspiration for Spinal Tap's stonehenge debacle. These guys used to do "Smoke On The Water" as an encore.
Finally, Ian Gillan is one of the best and most underrated vocalists. Check out his solo stuff he had out in Europe back in the early 1980s.
