80's hairbands/ metalbands.......

I see Deep Purple more of a 70's band. They only released 2 albums in 1980s (Perfect Strangers, 1984 & House of Blue Light, 1987).

Their best and most famous work was probably from In Rock (1970), that had "Child In Time," through their most famous/best work, Machine Head (1972), with "Smoke On The Water" etc, & Who Do We Think We Are (1973), with probably their best single ever, "Woman From Tokyo."

It was that Mark II lineup before Gillan (replaced by David Coverdale) and Blackmore left. Those lineup changes didn't help the band and they fizzled out by the end of the 1970s.

I liked Perfect Strangers because they used that "Machinehead" lineup. I used to joke that they took a bunch of outtakes from 1973 and recorded them 11 years later because it sounded very much like their old work. Which I thought was a good thing.

Of course Ian Gillan left Black Sabbath to rejoin his old band. There's an old article in "Circus" or "Hit Parader" magazine (can't remember) from the 1980s. In it, Gillan talks about his time with Sabbath. He said that Iommi & company got him completely "arseholed" in a pub before he decided to join the band.

They recorded Born Again in an old castle. Gillan said he recorded his vocals in the daytime while the other guys would get up around the supper hour and not record till late at night.

I remember Born Again filling up a lot of bargain bins way back but now its considered a lost classic given the lineup. I've heard a few songs. Not bad. I think its worth checking out but its only available on import in North America.

Their stage set from that 1983-84 tour was the inspiration for Spinal Tap's stonehenge debacle. These guys used to do "Smoke On The Water" as an encore.

Finally, Ian Gillan is one of the best and most underrated vocalists. Check out his solo stuff he had out in Europe back in the early 1980s.

sumocubs...oh yeah. check out motorhead's killed by death video. hilarious!! Rolling Stone once ran a mag with Axle's face on it, with the caption asking we need you now.
I was (and still am) a priest fan. We went to see Priest and Alice Cooper double billed
(divided crowd) I was there to see the Coop...I was mesmerized by Judas Priest. Loud guitars and bashing heads forever!

I bet there's not a handful of people on earth who remember a band named Melidian. I have searched for years trying to replace a cassette of theirs to compact disc. Even the internet has scant little info on them and they were pretty damn good. From Denmark I think. I've only found one single song of theirs online to download and that was on imeem and not one of the better songs.

You don't know how long I looked for that. Now I have the entire album downloaded. It's not quite as good as I remembered but still very enjoyable so thank you again.

Now I don't suppose you could pull a rabbit out of your a second time and provide a link to a downloadable Johnny Diesel & The Injector's album? The one with Soul Revival on it?

horneschoggle...when I saw them play that on Letterman (or was it Conan) I died. I never would have pinned Dee Snider for that venture. I used to play "we're not gonna take it" over and over in my room when I was 13...my mom would burst into the room and say "there you go, playing that song again" wow. I gve up on the 80's rock...it became such a formula, of course, but that's nothing new. Liverpool was suddenly ridden with mop tops when the Beatles hit it big...but none of those no name bands had the substance of the Beatles...record labels are quick to grab onto formula, flash in the pan type artists...and it gets watered down into the point of extinction.
I still listen to Maiden and Judas Priest, old Sabbath...those guys created a sound and were true artisits. The originals always stand the test of time. Even Snider saw it all for what it was, and I think realized that Sister could never compete in a new rock market...what better way to throw a look to the cheesey 80's than to get out the old costumes and sing Christmas Carols..I thought it was cool...took alot of balls!

I still dig some hair metal..... Ratt, Dokken, Motley Crue, Babylon AD, Cinderella, Poison, WASP, etc.... so many good metal/hair bands from the 80's.

^^^^^^

I have an old cassette of Diamond Rexx floating around somewhere. I think it's called Land of the Damned or something. Have to look for it.

It should still work, the forum wouldn't let me post before on this thread so I had to wait till now.

Once again, many thanks, dude. You're a God send. I love that Johnny Diesel album and now I have burned it, in its entirety, on a cd. That is an extremely hard one to find anywhere so I definitely appreciate it.

And I've been listening to a lot of old Ratt lately. So underrated and so disappointing to know Robin Crosby lost his battle. He's in a better place hopefully.
