TY litefoot for the link to Steve Hanks. I'd never seen his work before but it is beautiful. I kinda look like Moment for Reflection. I may need to get that one ;-)

If I could have only one painting it would be Nude Descending Staircase by Marcel DuChamp. I have a framed print in my livingroom and love to stare at it under different light conditions.

As stated on an earlier post the painting of Lady Colin Campbell by Giovanni Boldini at the National Portrait Museum. Heres a picture to take a gander at the wonder of it.

I think just about everything this guy does is pretty amazing and if you've every seen a pencil artist work, the difficulty in accomplishing this level is mind boggling. As his website states, he does use one pencil too. I've a great interest in art and have dabbled with pencils, chalk, and sculpting, so I'm in awe of his work.

Other than this, I've been to the Louvre, there I saw a painting by a master artist, might have been ... still can't recall his name but it was light reflections painted on pewter that just blew my mind, that would be my second choice.

For my wall, a peaceful Chinese mountain landscape.

That said, I enjoy the work of Bosch, e.g., his last Christ Carrying the Cross (with arguably the most amusingly grotesque faces he ever conjured up), and The Garden of Earthly Delights. But that's not the sort of stuff I want on my wall...

Claude Monet, Impression, but any of his waterlilies would do me..also Van Gogh - Pink peach ..I love the impressionists, but also love the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's posters, mainly Jane Avril and my walls would be blank without a Picasso, maybe Figures on a Beach. So here you have, Impression, Pink peach, Jane Avril and Figures on a Beach.
But this is not all, there is more, how could I not add to my wall a female painter, other than me :), so my preference goes to two females, first, Iemanjá, painted by Djanira and The Bridge by Grace Cossington Smith. I love art.

A beautifully stunning portrait by (in my opinion the best artist EVER!!!)... Salvidor Dali, it's called DNA and it is incredible, but then again most of his work is.

I still think Turner is the best and a good example of his work is
'Ulysses Deriding Polyphemus',now that's what i call a painting.

Edsta: I really like Miro and Rothko, too. I have a print of Rothko's "Blue, Green and Brown." When I look at it, I feel like I want to dive into it.

Yeah, know what you mean. The other reaction I often have to his stuff is just wanting to take long deep breaths while taking them in. Intense stuff! If you're ever in Houston, there is a Rothko Chapel here which is fabulous. There are some pics on their website, if you Google it.

I am a big Caravaggio fan. I like boy bitten by a lizard. I copied this off the Caravaggio painting web site.

JGash p.34
Baglione's description of a picture ..'... a boy bitten by a lizard which emerged from flowers and fruit; and it was painted with such diligence that the boy really appeared to scream.'
Marini has drawn attention to references in Ripa's Iconologia which explain the sixteen-year old youth with roses in his hair as a symbol of pleasure roses as a symbol of love and curly scented hair as indicative of delicacy lust and effeminacy. It is worth adding that the bared shoulder... can be seen as a sign of voluptas and that the lizard was according to Alciati a symbol of deceit.

I love to study art and find out about the symbolism. I love Van Gough and many many artists. Of the modern artists, I like Motherwell and there are just too many to mention.

Turn is a great artist. There are just so many.

I've always loved Degas's Seated Bather Drying Herself.

It's the nakedness of innocence, I think, the way the body's shown in the unaware and unregarded coherence and mystery of its own being.

It reminds me of a poem by D.H. Lawrence:

People were bathing and posturing themselves on the beach
and all was dreary, great robot limbs, robot breasts
robot voices, robot even the gay umbrellas.
But a woman, shy and alone, was washing herself under
a tap
and the glimmer of the presence of the gods was like lilies
and like water-lilies.

Edgar Degas "Waiting" and "Monsieur Perrot's Dance Class"

The first proving that even in the 18oo's there were anxious stage parents, and the second, a classic portrayal of knowledge being passed to the next generation.

As an additional note, there is a fabulous little known film, "The Train" 1965 B&W with Burt Lancaster. Depicts the true story of the French resistance efforts to keep the train loaded with priceless art from the French museums from getting back into Germany. For art and film lovers alike- it is well worth the effort to find it !

If I could only have one it would be Rembrandt's Return of the Prodigal Son. I'd have to keep it covered up most of the time though, looking at it for long makes me a little nervous.
