Baggy pants makes it easier to steal stuff. There's a practical application to the trend. Maybe this is why it's lasted longer than a year or two. That might make sense when it comes to stowing the stolen articles in the pants ... but with the crotch down to the knees ... how are they gonna run very fast?
Wouldn't that be like watching a woman run in a really tight skirt ... gets nowhere fast? | |

This thread prompted me to dig out a few photo albums, and I laughed out loud at a few pictures I found of myself from the late '60s and early '70s. I was SUCH a sloppy hippie-chick! No doubt more than a few straight-laced contemporaries, not to mention judgemental oldies (ahem!), had their little laughs about my "potential."
And - at the risk of being flamed here - I'm still doing the same thing, in a way. As a middle-aged woman, I now wear clothes that some style "hall monitors" take glee in mocking. My skirts are too short, for example, to be "proper," in some opinions.
Wouldn't it be funny if some of the saggy-panted guys who are being mocked here are simultaneously watching a short-skirted 50-something woman walk by, and laughing, making incorrect assumptions, etc.?
Ha! That's a great concept for a short story. Goofy, non self-aware people are GREAT characters. | |

I still think it's nonsense to make character judgements about these baggy-pants people. I don't have to make "character judgments" on those wearing the sagging pants ... I see what they're up to. They are so plentiful here, you can't miss it.
Actions speak louder than words.
**If they're going to linger around in gangs and act like hoodlums ... play loud obnoxious BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM hip-hop sh!t with no respect to their neighbors or fellow drivers, then ya ... they're going to be judged.
**If they're going to go into retail stores, or malls in large groups and heckle other shoppers, or just make messes, then leave ... then ya ... they're going to be judged.
Wouldn't it be funny if some of the saggy-panted guys who are being mocked here are simultaneously watching a short-skirted 50-something woman walk by, and laughing, making incorrect assumptions, etc.? From what I've seen, that is typical behavior of the saggy-panted guys ... it's not really a "what if" situation. They hang out at malls and on street corners mocking those of us who are actually doing something with our lives ... making something of ourselves. When I see it, I often wonder if they themselves have looked in a mirror recently.
I'd wager the 50-something woman in the short skirt has a job ... but I wonder how many of the guys "hanging out" making fun of her ... DO actually work? Which leads me to my next question ...
Where the H3ll are they getting the money to buy cars, then pimp them out with those expensive woofers, and then buy the recored hip-hop sh!t to blow through those woofers, and then add to that, the price of gas and how much it costs just to "cruise" around blasting their fellow motorists with their crap?
Just two streets over from where I live (middle class area), a whole house of those guys was busted. They had all kinds of stolen goods in there, drugs, guns, you name it ... it was there. They were living in absolute disgust, but when they went out ... they had the latest in the sagging pants style on ... they had older but well kept up cars that were all pimped out with the woofers.
They had been renting the house and the homeowner was not local. Their criminal activity was discovered through a sting operation. That house was not the only one involved, but it was the only one in the neighborhood.
OH DEAR ... I think I answered my own question ... YIKES!!!!!
If you ask me ... if people are judging them ... it's definitely something they are bringing on themselves. | |

But those guys were pure heat scores the way you described it
most smart gangsters/thugs dont advertise till they have enough money to leave the country for good and live the good life somewhere else.

That said...
Didn't most of us at one time or another wear some 'fashion' that our parents or at least people of another generation thought was just as idiotic?
Trends come and go. In a few years, they'll be wearing something else and some new 'idiotic' fashion will be heaped upon us.
It's not a bother to me if that's how they choose to dress. | |

You shouldn't be making broad generalizations about an entire group of people based on some experiences. I have seen ( and personally know ) many people that listen to hip-hop and/or wear baggy clothes. Not all of them do the things that you are describing. Many of them have decent jobs and don't committ crimes. Like some other people have mentioned, a lot of people might dress a certain way because it's the "cool" thing to do.
I also know some trouble makers and punks. Many of them do NOT listen to hip-hop or wear baggy clothes. If some men assumed that all women who dressed a certain way are sluts, then a lot of people would rip that man for making that comment. Same thing applies here. | |

Not all of them do the things that you are describing. Many of them have decent jobs and don't committ crimes. I'm not saying that all are criminals ... but where I live ... most are.
I will admit ... there is a guy in my own neighborhood who apparently works, but has his late-model car pimped out to the hilt with the big-a$$ woofers ... drives slowly through the neighborhood "BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM" (I guess that's his way of advertising his pimped out car) ... obnoxiously imposing himself on the whole neighborhood. I've seen him out on his deck ... sagging pants and the hip-hop sh!t "BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM" blasting from his house. Thank goodness he lives far enough down the street that I can't hear it at my house, but I will say this ... all the homes on both sides of him and across from him (a total of 7) are for sale. I guess his neighbors have had enough of his crap and just want out.
I went down and asked him if it was absolutely necessary to "BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM" as he passed my house ... asked him if he realized he was imposing that on all of us (DUH stupid question ... right? We know he knows we can hear his sh!t as he drives by.) His answer didn't surprise me ... "I have the right to play anything I want on my car stereo."
When I asked, "So you think that's just fine to impose that on the rest of us whether we want to hear it or not?" His answer ... "I could care less. If you don't want to hear it, shut your doors and windows."
So you see ... that's how we get the impressions we get ... through our interactions with the people who do those things. He could care less that there are noise ordinances here. I personally am not going to turn him in because I am afraid he would vandalize my house or hurt me in some way.
People who do not care about the law and others ... generally do not care about the consequences of breaking the law either. Like I said ...

the wearing of poor fitting cloths is just a sign that they lack education and have no money
that's more accurate. the style really came from the slums where young children often had to wear hand-me-downs from older sibling and even parents, clothes that, naturally, did not fit. some 'image consultant,' also known as 'cool hunters,' saw it, called it 'urban' and sold it far and wide. it's the same as all those other "urban" trends, like wearing caps of famous usa sports teams (yes, i know people have been wearing them for decades, but they didn't become a fashion accessory until rap videos made it cool to wear merchandise from certain teams), or, well, even blues and rock and roll. | |

Posted: 4/9/2008 3:37:32 PM | Well, a person can only experience so many sleepless nights and then they start to get to the point that they believe that all "sagging pants, hip-hop car drivers" are totally inconsiderate people.
I'm so sick of them imposing that SH!T on me ... all hours of the day and night. I note that I never hear it early in the AM ... when others are leaving out for work. No doubt they are all still in bed from running around half the doggone night ... BA-BOOM, BA-BOOMING the sleeping citizens.
We might have gone around in sandals and moo-moo dresses not wearing any bras and had long hair to our A$$ (actually I still don't wear a bra and my hair is almost to my butt) ... but when we disturbed a damn neighborhood, it was a freaking farm field out in the middle of nowhere and the BOOM-BOOM coming from the speakers was not in a pimped out car.
At this point ... I could care less about the sagging pants (and if their genitals really droop that far down) if the doggone BA-BOOM, BA-BOOMING could be stopped. Those people are out until all hours of the morning disturbing the sleep of law-abiding citizens who need to work ... pay taxes that in turn support their hip-hop life style of "no work and all play". You'd think they'd at least have the decency to let us sleep so we can actually go to work?
I've seen some of the lyrics of that hip-hop crap and it's so disrespectful ... it's no wonder that the hip-hop junkies are acting that way ... they just don't care about anyone but themselves. That's so SELFISH.
Actually, it's also selfish of them to impose the style on us ... showing off their half-covered A$$es ... no less in front of schools and children at the grocery stores, fast food places. I was at the library recently and a couple of them wanted to go in to vote ... they were told if they couldn't cover themselves appropriately ... they had to stay outside. 
They actually managed to pull up their pants long enough to vote. But we couldn't miss them driving up and leaving ... BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM, BA-BOOM ...  | |

True story. My friend and I went to 7-11 to get some more beer and there was two high school kids in line in front of us with their butts sticking out of their pants. My buddy pantsed one of the kids all the way to his ankles. It was one of the funniest things I've seen. | |

Some of these folks need to be out at night like i am on my job and see the things i see. Ever bit of the crime that happens around here is mostly teen or upper 20's black guys out at night looking for trouble. 98% of the time it has something to do with drugs and drug dealers with wads of cash in there pockets big enough to choke a horse. Most of the time the ones that dress this way black and white are some kind of trouble makers that have to be watched like a hawk. Most of the time there look carries over into the cars they drive. You can tell they like a lot of "bling bling" and a lot of boom-boom with there obnoxious hate and foul mouth music. They come in the stores that i have to go to to service with there baggy pants looking for something to steal. I have caught them myself. I usually catch 1 or 2 every night that rolls. They will have these big wads of dope money in there pocket and most of the time crack. And will still try to steal from a store. I have to carry a gun on my route to which i have a permit for just to do my job. They may look silly with there baggy pants and i have laugh at them a many a time trying to run from the cops. To me they look like Dorf. You remember the old Carol Barnett Show? Tim Conway? His character Dorf? Long body, Short legs? | |

I have a cousin who has a part time job as an security officer at a convenience store. He has caught many people trying to steal. Not all or most of them were wearing baggy clothing. Many of them were actually wearing regular fitting clothing. I still think you can't stereotype people based on what they wear on the type of music they listen. I know many men that are jerks. Most of them don't wear baggy clothes or listen to hip-hop. I also know some people who wear baggy clothing and/or listen to hip-hop. Many of them aren't troublemakers. They simply do these things because it's the "trendy" thing to do. Like I mentioned earlier, judging a man because he wears baggy clothes isn't any different than judging a man who has a lot of tattos or long hair. | |

All i have to go by is what i see and what i have personally had to put my hands on. 99.9999 % of the time it's the same thing. I wouldn't say something like this if i didn't know it to be true. At least where i live and work. This use to be a quiet town with not much going on at night. But now since Katrina rolled through Louisiana we have had a huge influx of people from there coming here. Crime has went up considerably and most all of them dress this way. Gang bangers and all around trouble makers and dope dealers. | |

My point is this. I don't think anyone should make broad generalizations about an entire group based on their experiences. I knew a few bars that had many problems. Fights, general rude behavior etc. The vast majority of the trouble makers were men with the "biker look" . It would be unfair for me to stereotype all men with the "biker look" just because the ones I have seen at these bars were trouble makers. | |
