How do you stay motivated?

My progress keeps me motivated. Even though it is hard for us to see our own progress sometimes, when others notice and commend us on that it really helps a lot. Also the fact that so many illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure run in my family. I know the odd are already against me but I don't want to help the odds along.

"hard for us to see our own progress"

... is why I don't weigh myself at all. I haven't been on a scale in 4 or 5 months, and probably twice in 18 months. You can't see a loss of 3 or 4 pounds/month after switching to healthy nutrition, but after a year, the slow, unnoticeable progress adds up to a dramatic, gratifying difference. You see it, everybody sees it. Screw the tyranny of the scales.

"diabetes and high blood pressue"

While your genes may contributing factors, don't despair, screw the odds! These two diseases are very common, self-inflicted lifestyle diseases, avoided, minimized, delayed by primarily by diet, optionally aided by strenuous aerobic exercise.

I try to stay away from the scale myself. I use to be one that hit the scale everyday but now I'm averaging once a week. I still have a personal goal of 40 lbs that I need to lose. But if you go by the bmi, I should lose about 50-60. I would be a stick if I did that.

My overall goal is to be a healthier person. And I'm on my way.

Looking in the mirror and noticing the changes taking place in my body.

Also it's always fun to play basketball with guys six and seven years younger and than me and outrun them :P

Going to the gym is awesome but taking part in sports or social events that really show-off/take advantage of the time and energy you invest in working out/eating healthy really give you the mental boost to keep up the work.

1. Have friends with the same types of goal to hang out with.
2. Treat your self as your goals are met.
3. Make health and fitness a hobby rather than a chore.
4. Dont be afraid to take time off to recover.

You can easily make workout fun, and the P90X gives me that option when I dont feel like leaving the house. Especially at the gas prices lately!

Its been my understanding for years that one of the simplest ways to regulate blood sugars is to simply boost your intake of protein, and decrease your refined/prossesed carbohydrate intake . Lean protein helps stabilize your entire system, and is paramount to maintaining a good healthy balanced diet. Good sources would be sunflower seeds and other types of nuts, tofu, soy, beans, lean meat, fish ect.If your protein consumption exceeds 30 percent of your daily caloric intake, it can be harmful and cause a buildup of keytones ,which causes dehydration.Dehydration is a big deal because it puts stess on your heart and kidneys and depletes calcium from your body.Ideally,(according to my understanding:) a persons protein intake should be about 15 percent of their daily calorie intake.A poster above me asked where the protein obsession comes from?...Protein is uber important in helping your system regulate the process of building up antibodies to fight infection, helps to maintain a healthy hydrated fluid balance in your body, helps to synthesize hormones and enzymes, and assists in doing a few other important things too.If a person goes overboard with anything, whether it be protein, carbs, vitamins ect,it becomes unhealthy and will have negative effects on your system. In my opinion, protein is and always will be a very integral part of a healthy and well balanced diet:)~Kat~

You can do the samething with coconut oil. Plus if you cut out all the bad fats and consume coconut oil you will lose weight more quickly provided you don't eat processed foods.

I read only a few answers to this, I'm sorry, wanted to just give my personal imput without their influince.

I have been working on this off and on for a few years. I would lose my motivation, mostly because of frustration. In my head, I expected things to happen faster than what they were. My brother only stopped drinking pop, and lost 40 pounds in a couple months. I stopped drinking everything except water, hot tea, and soy milk.... and I worked out... was careful of what I ate/calorie intake... and I only lost like 20 pounds in a couple months. I wanted things to happen five minutes ago... and it was going at a snail's pace. Just frustrating.

The thing that keeps getting me back on track is asking myself "How bad do I want this".

I will talk to others who are into fitness and working out. Lately, the thing that helps motivate me is I changed from walking a couple miles on the treadmill to walking about three miles outside. Being in nature and actually walking up and down the hills had been better for me mentally and emotionally.

I am eating differently than when I started a then too. I am eating maybe 500 calories less than I was when I started working out. (Between 1200 and 1500 now)

Another thing that keeps me motivated now... is that I have learned to like myself. I had to like who I am now and see me worth improving on.

Though I have seen little change weight wise... I HAVE had HUGE health improvements:
- No more high sugar
- No more high blood pleasure
- Asthma is easier to control (Had this since I was a little kid, going to just be something I have to live with)
- I can go up and down stairs without issues (By the 10th floor I am breathing heavy though)
- I smile more!

Amazing. Would you go lower in calories to lose weight?

Exercise is optional. All weight loss can be done with nutrition alone.

I can understand SpiceyCougars frustration. At my work we have a few people that comes together and works out at lunch and they get in to the same bind. One thing I have always noticed when I traveled is that some people in remote areas where they do not get the kind of nutrients like in the US isnt always what we might view as great shape. Some people's body is just naturally different from others.

The thing that has helped some of the people I know is simply breaking up the routine. They do more different workouts and are seeing alot of benefits. One girl dropped 150 lbs in the past year and half simply by taking different classes at the gym in the AM.

While these people dont look like the picture of Fit as most magazines want to depict it(Girls with arms the diameter of golf clubs and ribcages like starving children) they are now in great shape, one of them did a half marathon a few month back. Fitness is just that, weight isnt the only measurement.

I've stayed motivated by doing a couple of push/pull powerlifting competitions. I've also done an MMA, and a submission grappling competition. Once you commit yourself to doing a competition, there's no turning back and it motivates you because you really don't want to get embarrassed and you want to do well. Another thing that worked well for me is doing a before and after video for youtube. Once I said I would do it, again, there was no turning back. This worked well for a client of mine also. Here's the link.

HAHA!! Hell no! I feel hungry most the time. But I am finally losing weight.

I WAS doing 1500 to 2000, depending on the work out I did that day(leg days always made me feel like I was starving). The results were very slow. But I could squat 400 pounds. LOL!

eh, I have changed up my routine. Trying something totally new now. Dropping the calorie intake being one of them. Changing my excersize another.

weight isnt the only measurement.

That's what I keep trying to remind myself so I am not always frustrated.

I tell myself that I will eat healthy, work out once a day and make sure I stay well rested for a week. Then, at the end of the week, I tell myself the exact same thing.

It works wonders for me, I set my first week as a minimum, then I beat myself for my second week. For Example: Walking 1hr with a specific heart rate one day, then perhaps walking 1.25 hours the next day with that heart rate.

Beating your previous best is an amazing way to keep fit, for me anyways.

Another thing that keeps me motivated is women. Yea, I want to find a girlfriend. But, being overweight makes it difficult. Sure I want to find a girlfriend who is in love with me, not what I look like, but lots of women don't even look twice if you are overweight...as mean as it sounds, it's true. Same goes for guys.

I've never been one for big motivators, but what I do actually is go through these health and fitness forums. They keep me motivated. Also when i'm bored I try to look up healthy foods, and running routines just for fun. After looking at all the healthy stuff I get pretty motivated to get myself back out on the road for a jog.

Also, I will sometimes get bored with my routine, so i'll stop. I'll stop excerising for a few days and usually by then my body is craving for it, and i'm back up to par for a while.

Those are my weird little tips.

Edit: One more thing, I try to never depend on other people to motivate me. Because once they are gone, then what will motivte you ? I try to only rely on myself for motivation .

I wanted to say that this forum keeps me motivated. (Well, not the whole "lazy fattie" part)... but over all. Keeps me informed and educated. Let's me know there is gold at the end of the rainbow.

Thanks for having it!

If you're having problems staying motivated to exercise, and that interferes with your motivation for nutrition, then drop the exercise, it's optional.

Keep the nutrition, it's fundamental and much more important than the exercise.

I Have recently started a workout program with strngth training and Cardio.
I find the changes in my body help tp give me motivation.
I also find that adding new execises or more reps, more weight... keeps me challenged and wanting to see if I can do it, which in turn motivates me.
I went to the library and found books on the subject and incorporated new exercises into my routine.

I was taught something about motivation a little while ago. I always thought motivation just comes to a person and would get down on myself because I didn't have any. I learned that usually motivation does not come first. For most people they have to make themselves do something and then the motivation will come. So for me that was areal eye opener and I startted working out with no motivation but knew it would come and am so grateful that the motivation did come, and like I said earlier I try to do different exercises and things to try and challenge myself.

There is one other thing I do when I start to go off track. I visualize this 86 year old woman i seen on TV that was able to do Plie's and kick her legs up to her head and was in a Chorus line for 15 minutes. She hardly ever drives her car and walks everywhere she can. That gives me a lot of Motivation!

I'd rather be like her than anything else, and I know that I am on that path and have to keep it up to be able to achieve that.

Simple ...

People at the gym keep getting impressed day after day at how my dedication is and compliment me for my hard work. I got goals that I want to achieve and I stick to them. Plus just thinking about the gym motivates me. I am in love with lifting weights, it's part of my life. Also having an actual diet, would make you more dedicated and motivated to the gym.

My kids and being extremely healthy and fit to be able to do extreme sports like I used to B.C. (before children) is what keeps me motivated. Plus the fact that there's alot of diabetes, lung and heart problems among the extended family members motivates me not to be fall victim to those things.
