| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/20/2008 4:16:49 PM | I'm a geek then? cool...
To respond to the "intimate encounters" comment...speaking from a personal point of view, I'm not looking for "intimate encounters"...I doubt most geeks are to be honest.
The "alpha type dumbasses" can have that...I want a relationship that actually means something...

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/20/2008 4:28:42 PM | I am a nerd, I think nerds and geeks are cool. Obviously, my statement is biased. However, as I am a nerd, I can discuss logically the heuristics and stereoptypes I use to assess the level of geek/nerdiness in men :)
I am of the opinion (based on non-scientific data, obtained through personal observation, n=1) that geeks and nerds can be extremely physically attractive people.

Geeks are like an artichoke. You have to peel several layers off before you find the yummy part.
Good analogy!!!! Especially since the heart is the most important part of anyone eh? I'm gonna use that one in the future Reddwine..thanks
How about some other positive geek traits? 1. They like smart women and aren't intimidated. 2. If they're introverts they tend to enjoy and be relieved to be with an extroverted women (which most of us are). Something like opposites attracting perhaps. 3. They have a lot of books. 4. They like to have their own time to do learning/exploring/mind growing stuff, leaving equal time for a partner to have the same!
Reddwine, got any additions?

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/20/2008 4:41:23 PM | To paint ANY culture, job title, (other than scumbag lawyers), or person in a type of a category is the dumbest and most ignorant thing a person can do.
This geek as you call him wrote a ton of stuff on how geeks are great. Wow, that is weird. lol; thats like a jock writing an article telling all the reasons why women should date jocks.
This is an ignorant post. To all people saying they are geeks; posting blogs and articles trying to convince people your so great is not the answer; going out and finding someone, while using quality social skills is. Good luck.

Do you have statistical information to back this claim that IQ scores are dropping? where are they dropping? Lots of intelligent men here in my neck of the woods. Must be IQ tests down in the 'back woods' with some inbred family.
Well, I am not an american, but didnt G.W. Bush instagate "No one left behind" policy for elementry students who could not succeed to the next grade level due to reading incomprehention? I do agree that the IQ of the general public is dropping, but personally believe that its not due to the lack of brain capacity; in which we have achieved a maxium in a sub universal context of the brain; but in which the human species has an undying need to make life easier. Technology has a big foot in the door with this one, look at the evolution of the agricultural industry. In a span of 100 years, farms alone stopped using primarily animal and man power to grow crops and diversify their industry. Now there is heavy reliance on pestacides/insectacides, and herbacides so that the farmer doesnt have to spend 15 hours of the day grabbing at weeds and swatting flies.
If there is someone that a human wants, whether it be from instint or pure free will, they will try to gain it with strict brute force (metaphorically) until they can create a device that will do it for them. Eg. walking vs driving. Thinking this way that the IQ should be increasing at a expontential rate, due to the curiousity of man, yet I dont agree with that increase; yet I believe that lazynss is the remaing factor in all of this. Their will always be some 'geek' to figure out the next big thing to make life easier for me, so why should I bother to look it up in a book?
As to what the post generally talks about, I myself am not a classical 'geek', I would consider myself a neo-nonclassical intellect. I am a Biochemist with a double honors in Biochemistry and Toxicology with a Minor in Chemistry. Ive yet to see any women; with respect to my city, and county that really actually wanted a 'geek'. I Beleive its just a trend; jump on the band wagon type of thing.
Anyways, just figured id put in my 2 cents, for what its worth

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/20/2008 4:54:22 PM | you guys forgot to add most dorks also fit in this category. i can relate to all three. as for the "dumb ass alpha males", i don't have a circle on my fore head from smashing beer cans on it. also as i am older, my boobs don't hang down and are bigger than my girlfriends. if you don't keep working out, the prize stallion will look worse that the old nag. just a thought for what it's worth. i think women that have any intelligence at all know the different. i'm not talking about the one's that use shoulder pads to keep from hurting their heads. remember beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/20/2008 4:56:31 PM | Personally I really like slightly geeky looking guys when they take thier glasses off and get in the bedroom the ones I have had the pleasure of going out with turn into animals ;-) wahoooo (and if they are a geek too its even better) They dont laugh that there is only science mags in my room...(ok i did buy a cosmo in oct last year just to give it a whirl.....and it still has the cellophane wrapper on it) I study sceince in my spare time, love reading Bio/Physics/Psych text books and always have my nose in some book or other....(yes I too get called a geek by my friends)
Sensitive and thoughtfull too in my experience, although i guess any man can be these things too, but geeks more so....
Nothing better than going to a club and spotting a slightly geeky looking guy....my mates can all eye up the studs...while I am happy eyeing up the geek!

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/20/2008 5:25:36 PM | Oh gosh, dorks.... I forgot about dorks. They are definitely part of this category.
Until the release of a certain mainstream movie spoiled things. It was possible to identify fellow members of a particular subgroup of nerd/dork/geek(s) with the words "What is the answer to life, the universe and everything?"
More often than not, someone would know the answer, whereas everyone else would be oblivious. It was an immediate "friend' finder.
It was almost foolproof, no matter where I was in the world.
The joke on my profile "There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't" works quite well too.

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/21/2008 7:15:36 AM | OMIGOSH! Lol. This is so true. LOLOL. I'm a girl who dated a range of guys in school and during the prime dating years. I am guilty for having said yes to a date with a guy simply because I could not stop staring at his abs or shoulders. Yes. I have done this. I dated the football player, soccer player, baseball player (although a jock, he wasn't technically "hot"), the hot guy who dropped out of school to be in a popular garage band... and then I've also dated the boy in band, a chess club member, a cute guy (who, had it not been for his club affiliation would've technically been "hot") in microbiology club- etc. So yes, I HAVE DATED THE FULL GAMUT.
Most of these points are actually true. LOL.
I came to a place sometime in my twenties... inside matters to me. More than anything else. He doesn't need Brad Pitt's face, he doesn't need Lance Armstrong's body, he doesn't need money. All we really need is personality, a sense of humor, a loving spirit, a generous soul, a passion for enjoying life. That's it. Done deal.
Looking back at my choices in men after age 21 or so- wow- this is so true!! Thanks for sharing it. ;) My most memorable dates were either because they were SO bad- or SO good. The overwhelming majority of long lasting memorable dates were ones with "the geeks"!!

"Geek" is such a negative term, there really should be some movement to change that term in the dictionary. We're takin' it back!
There's a lot of us geeks, and we're a powerful force! We're going to start marching soon. It's going to be awesome. A million geeks all marching as one. Then all leaving as one when they remember that Farscape is just starting. :D
Geeks are like an artichoke. You have to peel several layers off before you find the yummy part. Pants and undies?
However, as I am a nerd, I can discuss logically the heuristics and stereoptypes I use to assess the level of geek/nerdiness in men :) I think that's the hottest thing I've ever read.
This geek as you call him wrote a ton of stuff on how geeks are great. Wow, that is weird. lol; thats like a jock writing an article telling all the reasons why women should date jocks. Well they WOULD if they could write.
"There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't" That's only 2 types. I thought you nerds were supposed to be smart *snorts derisively* :P
Seriously, though, in the same vein.. I once read something.
Roses are red. Violets are blue. All my base are belong to you.
My geek friends and I agreed that there's 1:100 women who would get that. But that one is SO a keeper.
On the topic, I'm a geek, and there are a bunch of things in this I'd agree with and some I wouldn't.
Not that many geeks are rich. Most do OK, but the suggestion that "most" geeks have built a Facebook or designed the iPhone is misleading. As a group we're generally employed and financially stable, with overall successful jobs. Which I think is all most women want. The ones that are looking for a sugar daddy ought to look elsewhere.
As a self confessed geek it's encouraging to see so many women lovin' on the geeks. But where are you all in real life?! Too many women simply dismiss us geeks as "not my type" which is their loss. I know a number of women who repeated go out with men who ARE "their type" and yet manage to be surprised that he turns out to be the same as the last jerk. If I can encourage all women to do one thing it's to stop thinking about a "type" and look at a person for who they truly are.
One thing most women don't know about geeks - we really value women. I have a friend, great guy, good fun, ooooh, the stories I could tell. There's something about him, though. He's incredibly good looking. Even as a man you can see it, and I've yet to meet a woman who didn't come away from meeting him and pretty much faint as soon as he was out of sight. It's a pain being out with him. Gorgeous women approach you all night... and ask "So your friend..." I tell them he's gay. What are friends for?
There's a point to this. He's a great friend, and a good guy. He's helped me out without question, and is one of my most reliable and trusted friends. But he's a complete jerk to women. He stands them up, treats them casually. We were out once and he asked the time. I said 11. He said he had to meet a girl he was seeing. I asked what time and he said 9. And no, he didn't leave straight away. The fact is that for a guy like him there will always be another woman. He doesn't value them because it comes so easily. Most "normal" guys are more or less the same, though not to that degree. Women come pretty easily. No pun intended. Maybe you'll go a week or two with a dry spell, date a woman for a few months, break up, find another. No big deal.
But it is a big deal for us. We don't get a lot of attention from women, most of us haven't exactly been setting the bedroom on fire. So because of that we really do value what we get. Because there isn't just another one round the corner. I've been single for three years. Someone loving me, wanting me, means a hell of a lot to me. And if by some miracle I'm ever with someone again I'll make damn sure she knows how much I appreciate her.

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/21/2008 11:23:20 AM | there is no love like a geek's love. however, love should come naturally between two people without the need to climb a mountain, whether one is geek or not.
wrote a big essay on why should women date geeks are a bit cheesy. the topic has long been overcooked by hollywood's films.

Every time I see 'there are 10' I start filling in the rest of that. It's pretty funny. I saw it on a shirt somewhere.... forget where though. I have one shirt that it would be sweet if someone got it.... so far there hasn't been anyone.

| why to date a geek? Posted: 4/21/2008 9:56:25 PM | I really don't know if I'm a geek, a nerd or a dork and I'm not about to start worrying about it.
I don't mind studying and noting will grab my interest more than a good puzzle - usually from real life. I tend to be a loner, even more now, and I really like raptors. I even have an idea for a roller coaster based on the flight of a raptor. Just recalled that a few days ago.
Have to relearn chess, but currently don't have time to make it a priority.
Something like opposites attracting perhaps.
After a lot of thinking about this, as well as observing, I have come to the conclusion that it is not opposites that attract, but compliments. Each sees in the other qualities that they admire but don't have, or believe they don't have and the attraction is there. The answer to, "Why are they together? They're so different."

especially the dishevelled and absent-minded science geeks glasses are a plus...
Any guy who can kick my ass in scrabble, tune up my computer, yap quantum physics with me, take me to the planetarium and share his collection of classic Lit. and science fiction is my kind a guy
if he hates pro sports, baseball caps and beer.. all the better
