Good work everyone! Sponge - Being a weekend smoker is better than beind an all week smoker. Maybe, you can taper down on your weekend smokes. Can you sleep now?

Yes, I can sleep now but I have been on only one Champix a day, instead of two...maybe thats the problem why I am smoking a bit...that and ....however I will make it, I have only bought one pack in over 3 weeks so better than a pack a day but not quite good enough...I believe in me and it was getting easy....Just wish my friends didnt all smoke I am trying to convert them all I will do it ( I hope ) ! Might take me little longer than others on here Gonna go pack to 2 pills a day for awhile again I guess. ...or maybe stay a weekend smoker time will tell...

3 weeks today for me! Not even a puff......I'm determined to do it this time.

Sponge, not to discourage you but stats show it sometimes takes a few tries before quitting for good and yes you are still doing great cutting down that much. But you should definitely go back to 2 Champix a day. I feel the same, keep thinking I should cut back to one, but I know from my previous attempt that it is too soon and my willpower will be weakened if I do. Hang in there!

Been a while since I checked out the forums. – forgot about this thread, almost even forgot that I quit smoking! Cold turkey and zero-slippage so far, but, still have strong urges sometimes. I’m sure it’ll all pass. I’m done with it…

Maybe I should change my smoking thingy on my profile? I dunno, I don’t pay attention to anything here but the forums, and, lately – not even those….

I think that if smokes hadn't been so easy to get when I was a kid, if the school hadn't been so tolerant of our smoking and if my Dad hadn't smoked (we learn so much by example), I and most of my friends probably wouldn't have started smoking so young.

That is so true.

In Europe in the 60's, Cigarettes were available from outdoor Vending Machines on the Street, 24 Hours a Day. If you had the Coins, regardless of age, you could inconspicuously get a Pack. And if the Machine was broke, the Convenience Store Vendor down the Street would sell a 9 Year old a Pack if you said it was for Dad.

None of that today is possible anymore. All Cigs for Sale now by Law have to be out of Sight.

Don't feel too bad Sponge......at least now you know you can do it and next time you will be better prepared, cause you'll know the pitfalls.

I like one of the slogans on Quitnow.ca "NOPE" (not one puff ever). It was a month for me on Saturday and NOPE has become my mantra, cause I know that's all it takes for me to get hooked again and I'm determined to do it this time.

Damn I tried to quit many times, and never ever made it past a few days.
However, I am not a quitter ( so to say), this sometimes stubborn Irishman wont give up the fight...damn, to think of all the $ I put out through the years, and then my health, and disgusting smoke smell on my leathers and cothes, not to mention the dirty ashtrays in the house, and oh, my breathing is sometimes short and if I dont have a cig in the morning when I open my eyes..watch out....Irish temper....
so..hmmm I think its about time me and the cigarette go one on one in the ring and see who comes out the winner........quit date coming soon ( July 1st will be the LAST cig for me....cough

I think about my old Dad when I think of the struggles that a lot of people are having quitting smoking. He smoked for 57 years and after being smoke free for his last 8 years...he passed away last December from COPD. He managed to quit smoking but still chewed snuff as he was so very addicted to the nicotine....but it's not the nicotine that kills...it's the smoke and all the toxic chemicals in the smoke. My Dad's lungs were totally destroyed from smoking by the time he was able to quit. He had a portable oxygen system and couldn't walk more than across the yard without it on most days. He couldn't do stairs and anything that he used to enjoy, he had to always be gaging how much energy he was going to need. He was only 72 when he died...his mind was intact but his body was like it belonged to a 90 year old man.

My Dad was able to quit with the support of a smoke enders group and also a breathing group (other people with COPD) that he met with every week. I quit smoking for good shortly after my Dad was diagnosed with COPD as all I had to do was think about whether or not I wanted to end up not being able to breath. One of my friends went to the smoke-enders group and met my Dad there and said that knowing him in that context was instrumental in helping her to quit as well.

Six freaking days and no smokes, blew it on Sat, was drinking that night. On day 4, no urge yet. No patch or drugs here, just promised myself that I will never buy smokes again.
I'm going to take Dakotatrucks advice and if I really can't take it I'm going to spark up a cigar.......I see him do this and it seems to do the trick.

It will be well worth it when you have quit for even a week or so as you will start to feel better!!! Try to stay away from smokers and all places where you are allowed to smoke for now as there are lots of triggers for the first while if you are around smokers. Above all else, get some exercise. Maybe find someone who has never smoked or someone who has quit for a long time and make them a walking or golfing buddy of yours. Reward yourself by putting the total amount of $$$ that you put towards cigarettes in a safe place and spending it on yourself every week. If that is even $7 a day, that will be $50 a week towards something special just for you. You are worth it. Good luck!!!

just got back from Europe...you can still send the kid to the convinient store for a pack or get them at vending machines...

They don't seem to take it as seriously over there as we do here then. When I add up the 100's of thousands down the toilet to mess with my health over the course of a lifetime ... I'd say its a rather big deal. Booze was equally ez to get, hope that isn't the Case today anymore?

stats show it sometimes takes a few tries before quitting for good

I believe that to be true, but I don't think its for any other Reason other than getting more Resolve having had the experience of previous failures to quit.

Anywho, today marks 8 Months of no smoking. This ties my Record of 1994 ... lol
6 weeks ago I shook the Nicotine Gum which wasn't exactly painless either, but nowhere near as bad as quitting cold turkey. I kinda got used to this "quitting" thing, I can almost tolerate any "withdrawal" or other similar psychosis-inducing symptoms. I quit Coffee for 72 Hours. I felt awful, but I have now gotten so used to feeling "awful" quitting all sorts of things ...

But I had to quit something else. Normal Food ... lol
Weight gains have not abated since having quit 8 months ago, up 25 lbs. on the Charts. The physical Riot Act was read and at gunpoint legislated, and now its come down to amino acids, lots of water, veggies and fruits. I just keep migrating from 1 horror to the next ... lol ... but I seem to be getting used to it. And if I just keep going on quitting all the Things that supposedly do me absolutely no good, I don't think being pilloried in the Stocks would have much of a noticeable adverse Affect on me either ... lol

We were born to enjoy life. So we find those things we enjoy, but then find out they kill us. We then quit all the joyful things so we live longer. So we trade joy for life. Is it worth it? ... lol

==============

Swedish Vaccine Helps Fight Nicotine Addiction

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet, in conjunction with Stockholm based Independent Pharmaceutica, have begun Phase II clinical trials of Niccine, a vaccine against nicotine dependence.
“Today there is no treatment for preventing relapse of individuals who have managed to stop smoking. Despite new and relatively effective products that help people stop smoking, about 80% of the persons that have stopped smoking will relapse within 12 months. We estimate that Niccine may have a considerable potential to prevent these relapses,” says CEO of Independent Pharmaceutica, Lena Degling Wikingsson.

A one-year study will be conducted at five clinics in three Scandinavian countries. The 400 heavy smokers taking part in these tests will be given advice and support as well as anti-smoking medication to help them stop smoking. Once they have stopped, half the group will be given one Niccine vaccination a month for four months and the other half will be given placebos. Their progress will be monitored for one year to see if they take up smoking again.

“This combination of effective smoking cessation, followed by Niccine treatment to prevent relapse, can be very interesting for individuals that have not yet managed to permanently quit smoking,” says Dr Karl Olov Fagerström, coordinating principal investigator of the study.

It is hoped that Niccine will help the immune system build antibodies against nicotine, which in turn will stop the smoker from getting a ‘kick’ from smoking.

Although initially the vaccine is aimed at relapse prevention, the researchers hope that in the future it may also help people who are trying to give up smoking.
