well if its not old then they listed the states at55 wrong been going through many of them and they have 65-70 posted ...maryland, new york, new jersey, and pennsylvania are all higher than 55
guess you can't beleive everything you read
i have driven truck during both periods
almost all accidents i have seen were caused by someone doing something stupid
if someone is going to go flying down the highway over the speed limit they are not going to fly slower if the speed limit is 55
actualy they are more likely to hit a 55mph car harder than a faster car
speed don't kill it never has ...the person abusing it kills
just like guns don't kill ...the person pointing it does
we need to go after the real problem

much of what i have stated were facts too like the correct speed limits in the states you listed as 55
everyone has an opinion one way or the other
mine are based on my expeiriences
i know that if the speed limits were at 55 mph then pretty much all the owner operators would be forced to quit ...not enough miles to cover thier cost

OK Mustang Man...you got a rise outta me ....now here is an idea I have suggestes several times and been screamed at every time for....especially being the mom of four sons...RAISE the driving age to 17 and make drivers training a part of school curriculum again like it used to be. Sould I duck now?

Tony...lowering the speed limit is not going to save money, it's going to cost most...the price of everything is going to go UP because it's going to cost more to truck it across the country if the speed limit is lowered, did you read Hodgie's first post on it?

Mustang... thank you for caring, but seriously...I stick to 75 on the highway and don't go faster then that anymore. I want to be here for thousands of more POF parties too

I have already forwarded a letter to my congressman, the director of NHTSA, and the State Police. We'll see what happens. I'm happy I got a rise out of you Robin, and when you come to a SE Mich party sometime, we can gang up on ya and take your keys away,

But remember there are areas where trucks have to go slow, while the speed limit is 70 for cars. It really confuses me, because you great a set of slow moving vehicles which block the other traffic. In general it's safest when all vehicles are moving at about the same speed and has not yet reach saturation.

And I understand that it might seem like the price would go up, but if we killed the demand, then prices of fuel would drop dramatically. At this point all indicators say that oil should be about 50/60 bux a barrel. There is absolutely no reason that oil should be this high. For example, there is always something wrong with the middle east, yet oil has been low before, and in the past the dollar has hit lows, and oil was 50 bux a barrel. So why now? Even the analysts are confused.

Off topic, I tried to email BadMustang to ask about his pics.....where's Zorro? And he banned smokers......

Robitty? 75? WOW!

Lil' ol' LHL just sticks to 65 and the right hand lane has my name on it.....poor trucks get pulled over for 5 miles over the limit.....while the 'hot shots' can barrel by me in a cloud of dust.....that extra 50 feet you gain must be important!

LHL, I have now updated to allow smokers to send me hate mail on the lowering the speed limit subj. I wasn't getting enough anger from non smokers. But I know that you're contacting me for different concerns that only Zorro will answer.... Z

Here are some facts and opinions based on experience.

I retired from the trucking industry.
The faster the speed at the time of impact the worse its going to be. IT IS PHYSICS!!!! FACT

Speed doesn't cause accidents. Driver error cause most accidents. FACT

Recertification would only find out who is physically unable to operate a vehicle safely. People would be good little boys and girls when being recertified and not drive the way they normally do. Remember taking your first driving test? Enter the car, adjust the morrors, put on seat belt, put the car in drive, use turn signal to enter traffic, hands at 10 & 2. Never go over the speed limit.Pass the test and get your license. Get in the car, put on the seat belt, leave the mirrors alone since no one touched them, find a comfortable position to hold the wheel, leave the parking lot w/o signaling since you can only turn one way and now you just have to make sure a cop doesn't catch you doing something wrong.
FACT and OPINION

All studies have faults. There were ads trying to get people to "Buckle Up" that said "Most accidents happen within 25 miles of home." I have no doubt that this is true. What they didn't tell you was the percentage of driving that is done within 25 miles of home. If 75 % of all accidents happen within this distance and 90% of our travels is done withing this distance it would stand to reason that once we are father from home it's safer not to wear your seat belt!!!!
I'm not saying the study was wrong, I'm only saying that studies are bias and not all the facts are presented.
FACT and OPINION

A lower speed limit isn't going to put most independent operators out of business. As hard as it may be to believe they don't all run legally. Many of them do what ever they have to do to make the most money. There are drivers who ignore the speed limit and hours of service and are masters of log book manipulation. May be I should say log book"S". The rising cost of fuel is more likely to sideline truckers than any law or regulation.
FACT AND OPINION

Our saftey is our responsiblity. When we drive responsibly it not only increases our saftey but the saftey of those we share the road with. There is more than one factor to determine what speed is safe. Responsible drivers recognize these factor and drive accordingly.
FACT and EDUCATED OPINION ( based on 38 years of driving, 30 years for a living and seeing more than my share of "creative" driving!!!)

Of course i cannot say this is true of every single truck driver that is out there but in MY own personal experience, i have never seen a truck driver cruising over the speed limit except for 1 time and that was just very recently and very scary! lol Most of those truck drivers i see on the highways are going the 10 miles or whatever it is posted, slower than the other drivers. In fact,,,ive never ever had one pass me ever. Recently however, on a good stretch of back road here the posted speed is 50. I do admit, i have a heavy foot and my normal speed down that road is 65. I looked in my rearview mirror and while there wasnt anyone behind me a few mins ago (yes i know i speed and yes i look for cops lol) lo and behold there was this big ol rig right up on my a**!! I was like,,wth did he come from??? Mind you,,im going 15 over the speed limit and this big boy came from somewhere and caught right up to my butt! Thats the first time id ever had that happen and i admit it startled the hell outta me. and lol

thank you rip

john you are so right
i would never base my decisions on other peoples studies they tend to pad them in thier favor
you know the states didn't just say lets raise the speed limits they all did many studies before they made that decision not just one study i'm sure there were conflicting studies too but they weighed all the options and made thier decision
our own govener was against the speed increase for trucks and said she wouldn't raise it
something had to change her mind

I can't imagine who would WANT to follow you closely, ghodgiei! I don't like to follow anything closely that I can't see around.....PS I drive a sports car so I can't see around ANY SUV, truck or BIG truck.....
That's another thing.....people that follow too close.....drives me nuts. I was the cause of a six car spinout in the winter just because I applied my brakes in the snow. I was fine, didn't even slip a little.....all the not-7-car-lengths-behind jerks looked like a Wild Cat ride behind me.....
how can you NOT allow stopping distance? Who knows if the car into front of you isn't gonna break a tie rod, blow a tire, or have a driver heart attack, etc.
Allowing a little extra room can only work to your favor.....NOT allowing it is like playing Russian roulette!

Lighthouse babe...At most i only go 5 over the speed limit...that's not so bad is it? I noly go that fast when the highway's empty or I'm following the pack...hmm, so does that make it all the time? It gets me there 5 minutes before you so I get the better parking spot...LOL! Seriously, if I can't do it with my cruise on...i slow down, I don't tail gate and I'm a careful driver.

hodgie...I'll follow really close behind you babycakes, just not in a vehicle

Ok this is a lil off topic but it pertains to speeding.

Im sure any number of us Mich drivers have either hit a deer, opposum, raccoon (or any other creatures lol) or know of someone who has. Quite a few years ago, i was running late for my first day on the job, so yeah i was speeding to get there. Well i pulled into a parking spot and when i got out of the car, something on my antenna caught my eye. Upon closer inspection, it was a bird! LOL Poor thing and this is no joke,,,,,the antenna was right between its legs! OMG! lolol I had noooooooo idea this had happend till i parked the car. lolol
