| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/27/2008 8:17:22 PM | "And John, when quoting, quote the whole thing, not just part of the quote that then takes they whole thing out of context. "at times" being the most important element of that sentence. "
Here is your whole quote, happy?
So, the jack**s that drives 45 in a 70 in the middle lane isnt an issue? Oh, let me slam on my brakes and make the high risk of hope the hell the other guy behind me is paying attention and not rear end me, all because Im suppose to use my turn signal at all times. Oh please. Everyone who preaches about turn signals is lying to others and themselves when they say they always use them."
Why would you have to slam on your brakes? A good driver would see the "jack**s" going 45 well ahead of needing to slam on his brakes and either slow down or change lanes. If you are paying attention then the guy behind you wouldn't even come close to rear ending you because you would never have to slam on your brakes not to mention he would know you are changing lanes if you use your turn signals.
"So then here if your so bent on the subject... dont get in my way, or I may run you off the road and cause you to have an accident or __________________ ( <--- fill in the blank) Since thats all Im apparently doing."
This type of attitude that some drivers have is why the roads are dangerous!!!! Not just "at times" but at all times.
"Professional driving (big rigs) fall into a totally different class of drive John, you know that. There are 20 times as many laws you have to follow just for having that CDL. Its not like a cycle endorsement, you truly have to earn a CDL. But with the advantage point of what 12 feet higher than the average driver and having a vehicle that 8 times longer, Uhhh yeah, you need to use the signals so the others know where you need to go."
There aren't 20 times as many laws for CDL drivers. In fact the most of laws pertaining to only CDL drivers have to do with load restrictions, hours of service, placards and routes. The laws that pertaining to driving are the same. To insinuate that semi's need to use their signals because they are bigger and people need to know where we are going as a reason is rediculous. If anything the smaller a vehicle is the more important it is to signal because they are less noticable. EVERYONE should use their signals, period. They aren't an option on any vehicle for a reason. BTW there isn't a truck where the driver is 12 feet higher, the legal height for a truck is 13' 6". Unless the driver is sitting on top of the tractor he isn't within a 1.5 feet of the top of the trailer.
You said that "driving is an instinctive task." You are wrong. Driving is a learned skill. The only time driving is instinctive is when you have to react quickly to a situation and don't have time to think about your reaction.
I don't always drive the speed limit. If conditions are such that I can go a little faster I do at times but not always. There are times however when conditions make going to the speed limit unsafe and I go slower. I have heard so many people complain about people going the speed limit in the left lane because its for "faster" traffic. I have yet to see a sign that indicates the left lane is for going over the speed limit. It may be curtious to more over for faster traffic but unless it is posted to use a lane only for passing its not required. Agressive drivers who try to intimidate slower drivers by riding their azz are not only rude but are dangerous even if they won't admit it. People who think that going the speed limit is manditory are a danger to everyone on the road. Everyone is resposible for driving in a safe manner not only for themselves but for the people they share the road with. Too many people seem to forget that driving is a privilege and not a right.
And yes I am preaching. I saw way too many thing happen during my career that could have been avoided by people respecting other drivers instead of trying to being "cowboys" on the road.

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/27/2008 8:23:07 PM | Do I look in the mirror? I do every day. Now can you look at yourself too? or are you just to busy criticizing everyone else? I live with my choices every day. Are they all the right ones? probably not, but i defend what I do and what I say and take responsibility for my actions and my words. Do you? Honestly?
Oh here she goes again, miss never break any laws.
I dont have to answer to you or anyone else... well maybe the cops LoL... on second thought.. WOW, yup thats right... I have a clean driving record... no points at all... never had a ticket for a moving violation. Only tickets I ever had were parking tickets.
Gee, I didnt know that bad drivers had clean driving records. Maybe its true then, maybe the system is corrupt and the worse you drive the better your record is.
Edit

I agree... Its the conditions, that make if safe or not. I touched on that vaguely, so thanks for making that more understandable. But if I remember right from the driver education book, that it states that slower traffic is to keep to the right and the left lane is for faster traffic. But Im not sure on that. And I agree with the people riding your butt with the intimidation tactics, those the the worst offenders of all in my opinion.
But I dont understand this one... "People who think that going the speed limit is manditory are a danger to everyone on the road. " Now if everyone drove the limit (say it was mandatory) the theres no need to pass anyways. There would be no need for sudden moves or swerving or any other BS that drivers do.
So, if theres nextra laws for CDL drivers, whats with the training book being 200+ pages compared to the 'pamphlet' book you get from the state for kids to learn from? Now, what about a rig that needs to move a lane over... its ok for him to just make the move when the 2 people next to him cant see either the front or back signals? Isnt that the reason for the middle signals on the trailers?
You said that "driving is an instinctive task." You are wrong. Driving is a learned skill. The only time driving is instinctive is when you have to react quickly to a situation and don't have time to think about your reaction. Isnt that what I been saying? Hence the 45mph and 70 mph scenario? But yet you do have a point. There is something I heard once that fits this pretty good.. from a movie "There are two types of drivers, the calculating driver and the kamikaze driver" But theres seems to be a cross between the two as well, when the calculating driver drives faster than the posted limit, thus making them a combination of the two. Thats where I fit in.
I must say, as far as I have noticed, that more defensive drivers are in accidents than the aggressive ones. Defensive drivers tend to be overly cautious which leaves other drivers guessing what they are doing... the ones who sit at the 4 way stop and let 15 (ok exaggerated a bit) pass thru before they will go. Its the one who reaches the stop first that has the right of way (its in the book) and if two get there at the same time, the one to your left has the right of way (also in the book)

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/27/2008 8:38:44 PM | | the main thing is to show respect for other drivers on the road even if they don't show you the same respect that alone makes you the better driver | |
|
| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/27/2008 8:59:28 PM | I always try to. Believe it or not, I do. LoL Im sure those truckers who need to make that wide right turn are more than happy to see me stop early in the left turn lane so they have plenty of room to make it. I give truckers and bikers more respect on the road than any other drivers. I make sure in some way, to let the bikers know that I have seen them and know they are there. I even will stop to try to help people who have broke down on the highway.. offer to call someone, make sure everyone is ok, etc. When was the last time you stopped to help someone? My last stop was 3 days ago.
Its it was said, it is all about respect and courtesy for the fellow driver, but Im NOT going to be using my signal when I know it makes no difference... like when the next guy back is 1/2 mile behind me or Im the only one on the road.
I am done with this topic and said my mind and my views.. continue to argue if you may but I am done with it. No scapegoats, no martyrs. You all have a great day.

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/27/2008 9:17:22 PM | "But I dont understand this one... "People who think that going the speed limit is manditory are a danger to everyone on the road. " Now if everyone drove the limit (say it was mandatory) the theres no need to pass anyways. There would be no need for sudden moves or swerving or any other BS that drivers do. "
If you look at the speed limit signs in most places there is a minimum and a maximum. I was referring to people going under the maximum. People going the minimum have just as much a right to be there as anyone. If you are driving at a safe speed most of the time there would be no need for sudden moves or swerving or any of the BS that drivers do unless you get cut off. If you are driving at a safe speed and distance you see most situations well ahead of needing to make any sudden moves and can adjust accordingly. The best you can do is to minimize the risks. If it means you get somewhere a little slower than you want I feel its worth it.
Most of our driving is done within 25 miles of home. At 80 mph (1.33 miles per minute) it would take 18.8 minutes to go 25 miles. At 70 mph (1.16 miles per minute) it would take 21.5 minutes to go 25 miles. You save less than 3 minute. Now if you take other factors into account the times would vary. Unless you are on a long trip is speeding really worth the risk of a ticket let alone an accident?

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/28/2008 2:08:13 AM | | Um,,,,lol,,just wanted to sneak in a comment about the blinkers! lol Actually,,i use my blinkers ALL THE TIME! lol On the highways, in town, side streets when turning into my driveway, leaving a parking lot such as work or a grocery store. Wherever and whenever i am in my vehicle and am going to make a turn or switch lanes or enter/exit traffic, its my habit to turn my signal on whether there is traffic around or not. Just a habit. | |

| Michigan Drivers Posted: 5/28/2008 7:34:07 AM | I have to comment on the blinkers thing here. If your vehicle has blinkers, it is against the law NOT to use them. If your vehicle does not have blinkers, the law requires hand signals. I have an old school motorcycle & have learned this lesson. What does it hurt to signal anyways? & by the way, who cares if you get there even 15 minutes earlier or later? Suzanne | |
