| When someone points out that you're old.. Posted: 4/6/2008 6:43:24 PM | Well Royal, there's honesty and there's just out and out being rude and crass. Not to mention being disrespectful. I don't know about you,but my Mom(with my Dad waiting his turn) would have knocked every tooth out of my head for what she has said to you.
What's wrong with her for crying out loud?!

| When someone points out that you're old.. Posted: 4/6/2008 8:05:33 PM | | Notabub, this is my daughter you're criticizing. My point is that teenagers feel safe in taking potshots at their parents, where they would never dare say such a thing to a professor or employer. Maybe in your family physical brutality is considered good parenting but neither my ex nor I ever hit one of our children in the face for talking rudely. If her older brother is any sign, she'll turn out okay in a few more years. | |

| When someone points out that you're old.. Posted: 4/6/2008 8:21:53 PM | Sorry,I just didn't experience what you are hearing from your daughter with my two daughters when they were teenagers.
My general point was that I was sorry for what you are hearing from your daughter. Did not mean to insult you or your parenting abilities....

| When someone points out that you're old.. Posted: 4/6/2008 9:00:47 PM | I tell them "yes and I'm still alive." If they want to learn from experience rather than me, they probably won't make it. If you want to look good when your my age better to learn from prior travellers. Those with more scars can teach you more. What kills me is when my daughter complains that she is getting old. She's not yet 20. | |

| When someone points out that you're old.. Posted: 4/6/2008 10:56:11 PM | The last young guy who called me old ate some humble pie. The conversation went like this:
Me, "You look like you're having a problem... can I help you?"
Young guy: You're too old to understand any of this."
Me, "Try me."
At that the boy continued (sarcastically), "I am trying to reinstall windows xp pro using the 6 floppy disks I have created. I get to the repair screen and then hit a blank cos I have no idea what the command should be to get it to work. I have spent the last 3 hours working thru article after article and just seem to be going round in circles!!" I smiled... looked him in the eyes and said, "That's simple! When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below (This is where you stopped in your post) . This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R. To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R". Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, read this Warning#2! Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
This should help.... Is there something more challenging I can help you with?"

| When someone points out that you're old.. Posted: 4/7/2008 8:35:07 PM | Taking my son back to college, we ate lunch at a restaurant and I went up to pay the check. When I pointed out that the amount was wrong, the cashier patiently explained that I had been given the senior citizen discount. She also complimented me on my handsome grandson! He laughed and called me Gramps all the way back to school!
One day at work one of my co-workers patiently explained that when I got to be his age I would understand things a little better. Turned out I was a freshman in high school the day he was born.
If someone pointed out that I was old, I would think them foolish for pointing out the obvious. If they were suggesting I lacked some capability or another I would adjust their attitude with a hard whack on the noggin with my walker, or just turn down my hearing aids until they went away.

We live here in this world together and should be respectful of each other. If she lives well, she will someday get to be this age too, faster than she can ever imagine.

I raise sons, they love to tease me but would never dream of being rude, insulting or hurtful to me, nor I to them. Teenagers grow into adults and need to learn to be respectful and caring fron the beginning.

| When someone points out that you're old.. Posted: 4/8/2008 12:59:23 AM | I have dealt with rude people on here half my age. When they deal the "old" card, my reply is simply, come back and post in 25 years (after you have lived them) and let's see if you feel the same way.
Granted, many 20 somethings are intelligent and have experienced a great deal in their short life times, but nothing can give them what a 25 year lead has given us.

I have also contacted a man on here who was 5 years younger and he wrote back I was too old.
Go figure, I think I looked better than any of the men, but my eyesight isn't that good these days

You're right. I'll take her out of college and put her back in Kindergarten and raise her all over again, the right way this time.
She has many strengths including empathy, creativity, intelligence, beauty, independence, self-discipline, and ambition. I'll accept her just the way she is, thank you, and you people just stop telling me how to raise my children. Guess what? It's too late! The ship has already left the harbor.

I was debating someone in the forums when a girl in her late 20s not liking what I was saying started calling me "Old man". How do you respond to something like this? It apparently seems like a put-down but it really dosen't offend me. Am I expected to crawl away in embarrassment because of my age? I really cannot think of how to respond to someone who says this to me as it just seems childish and rude.
Seems the question is about how to deal with immature insults.
1. You can memorize immature counter insults and insult their inexperience. 2. you can ignore the immature insults 3. you can give longwinded lectures about manners and communication 4. you can make inappropriate sexual advances
